1964 Volkswagen Type 3 Notchback

Curiously, the Volkswagen Type 3 Notchback was never offered in the US market. It was never quite clear why VW decided to bring just the Variant and Fastback versions to our shores, but intrepid enthusiasts have since filled the void throughout the years, importing these two-door sedans to satisfy an unmet need. This Notchback for sale in Miami has been modified a bit, but with a period look and not to an extent that may have the purists shy away.

Up for auction, 1964 Type 3 VW Notchback model TS. This is a EXTREMELY clean example of a TS (Touring Sedan) model.

Body:
Painted original color Ruby Red. Paint is 9 out of 10.
Very straight and clean with no dents.
All chrome is redone ( bumpers, door handles, etc…)
All new seals and moldings including body and rocker moldings
New windshield (Original also comes with the car)
Rest of glass is original

Interior:

Completely original with the exception of the new carpet. You’ll be hard pressed to find an original interior in this good condition

Two sets of wheels come with the car. 17″ x 7″ BRM’s and refurbished smoothies that are ORIGINAL to the car.
Smoothies have show quality ORIGINAL Type 3 hubcaps
An additional pair or narrowed 17″ x 5.5″ BRM’s also included. (These we cut to help with turning radius. The existing wheels rub (slightly) on the inside at full lock. Still very drivable.

On 17″s – (Front) Nankang 185/35/17 – (Rear) Federal 195/40/17
On smoothies BRAND NEW Firestone F560 – 155/15 Rear & 145R/15 Front
New Altas 1/4″ White Wall inserts on smoothies
Breaks:

Drum breaks are redone all around with NOS parts:

NOS Ate Master Cylinder
NOS Break pads front and rear
NOS (hard to find) break cylinders. 4 up front and 2 in rear.

Engine:

Converted to 1600 and runs very strong. Very good running car.
Original engine to the car was rebuilt and has less than 1000 miles on it

Heads redone by Brothers in California. I’ve been told this TS model has higher compression heads.

Of all the Type 3s, the Notchback is my favorite. Sure, it may have been the forbidden fruit factor, but this had the look of an almost alternative BMW 2002. Just a sharp, handsome looking two-door sedan with few styling gimmicks. I may have not gone for such an aggressive tire and wheel size as this example currently wears, but that’s a fix that is relatively easy to undertake. Prices for good Notchbacks are averaging in the $15,000 to $20,000 range, which is not a whole lot more than a Beetle of similar vintage will run you.
