1969 Mercedes-Benz 250CE 5-speed Manual

$_57

The 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL that Carter featured last week highlighted a very rare option for the manufacturer at the time, the ZF 5-speed manual gearbox. But the roadster wouldn’t be the only model to employ this advanced transmission. The rather staid looking W114 Coupe would feature the 5-speed in the six cylinder models, complimenting what was, at the time, the newest chassis in the lineup. This 250CE for sale in Michigan was imported into the US in the 1990s and featured at one time in the Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s magazine, The Star.

This is a very special car to us as we sold it 2 years ago to the current owner and everyone here loves this car, from the way it drives to the way it looks! Most of these W114’s have been neglected or bought cheap in the day by people that did not have the financial where with all to keep them up, but that is not this car. It has been loved and respected by all it’s owners and the condition of this car confirms it. The odometer reading is accurate and in kilometers so it is in the 60K mile range.

This 250CE is a European spec car imported to the US back in the 90’s. It is also a 5 speed manual car which was an option as the 4 speed manual was standard. The color is Moss Green Metallic with Parchment MB Tex interior. The car was repainted to a very high standard, the interior is original and shows no wear on the seats, some age on the armrests, no dash cracks although the vinyl on the center speaker grill is puckered. Exterior trim is near perfect, rubber shows minimal age, sunroof operates correctly with no leaks. All mechanicals seem to be very good, no rust, note undercarriage pictures.

There is an article in the March/April 2005 issue of “The Star” featuring this exact 250. The article was written by one of the previous owners, Kyle Given. Kyle was associate editor at Car & Driver and also worked for Motor Trend and Sports Car Graphic.

The 250SL with the 5-speed we mentioned above was listed at an eye-watering $145,000 miles. As tasty a motor as that is, it’s nice to see that you can get a similar vintage personal luxury vehicle from Mercedes-Benz at a fraction of that price. We featured this exact same coupe in February 2011 with an asking price of just over $40,000. In a world where you can still get a solid, if not perfect, 300SEL 6.3 for that kind of money, we’re a bit beyond the market, as W114 values haven’t moved much since then. Somewhere in the $20,000 to $30,000 range is a more realistic estimate for this coupe.
