1972 Porsche 911T

Rob is our resident Porsche nut here at GCFSB, but I had to save one 911 for myself this week. Growing up, my father had a picture of a green 911 set in a very pastoral setting hung on his office wall. I’d always admire that picture when I’d visit his work, his workspace peppered with various other petrolhead paraphernalia that made his colleagues offices look a bit bland. When I set eyes on this 1972 911T for sale in Minnesota, I instantly thought of that picture that hung in his office, which now happens to be his iPhone wallpaper. Some things never change, then. The 1972 911 is a curious year, as the oil tank was moved within the car’s wheelbase in an effort to improve handling. Thus, a 1972 911 can be easily distinguished by it’s oil filler door directly aft of the passenger door. This would last for one year, as it was reported many service stations were putting petrol in the oil tank.

This desirable 1972 911T Coupe with factory A/C has traveled only 60,957 actual miles under 2 long-term owners. All numbers match. Rust-free floor pan is totally original with original grey factory undercoating. Excellent original interior has only required repadding of the driver seat with the correct horsehair.

While under the care of the first owner, a respected pediatrician from Aberdeen South Dakota, the all original body received a full exterior respray in the original Viper Green (aka Emerald Green #225). The 1980’s paint is still excellent with minor chip touch up showing. Engine shows evidence of prior repair: a case reseal and solid chain tensioners fitted.

The second owner purchased the car in 2001. For reasons unexplained, the car was stored untouched until 2012. Full mechanical recommission and complete vehicle detailing was just completed.

The directive of the second owner was to:

A) Prepare this car to the highest level consistent with its originality.

B) Find a good home for this exceptional Porsche.

While it’s not completely original, this 911 has been sympathetically cared for over the years and with only two owners and low original mileage, this should bring strong money. The 911T was the base model 911 and 1972 saw the switch to mechanical fuel injection to be replaced the following year by Bosch’s Continuous Fuel Injection (CIS). Prices are not getting any lower on early 911s and a clean example like this should fetch somewhere around $65,000 or a bit north of that figure.
