An early Porsche 930 is a truly special vehicle, not just for its sheer performance but for its development and ultimate showcase of what Porsche was capable of producing. While initially intended to follow in the footsteps of the Carrera RS as a lightened 911 designed to meet homologation requirements, plans for the 930 shifted as those requirements changed and the car became an opportunity for Porsche to produce a car that melded a high degree luxury with blistering performance. Porsche could now compete with the likes of Ferrari. During the early years, from 1975-1977, the 930 changed little featuring a turbocharged 3.0 flat-six mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. The greatest change then came in 1978 when displacement was increased to 3.3 liters and an intercooler was integrated into the redesigned spoiler. My preference, purely from an aesthetic point of view, has always been for the 3.0 liter cars for the simple reason that the whale tail fits the lines of the car almost perfectly, while the tea-tray of the 3.3 liter cars looks slightly clunky. It’s a minor difference, but one that always stands out to me. The example here comes from that early 3.0 liter period: a rare sunroof delete, European, Grand Prix White 1977 Porsche 930, located in Los Angeles, with 21,787 miles on it.

It’s strange…I saw this car and initially viewed it as another Grand Prix White 911, which isn’t my favorite color though it is one that many others enjoy and which can look good in the right context. However, thinking about it a little more, while we do come across a decent number of Grand Prix White 911s we do not come across many Turbos in this color. I don’t know the numbers so this may be nothing more than coincidence, but perhaps the color is more rare on the 930 than I realized. This car presents fairly well, though for a car with this reported mileage I would expect it to be a little more pristine, even if it is nearing its 40th birthday. That suggests some extra homework needs to be done by prospective buyers, but the price is generally in line with other 930s of this vintage so if everything checks out it should make for a very nice investment.

Keep Looking. There are a lot cleaner models out there, and for a lot less $. The interior looks like 150K miles, not 21,787. Is somebody trying to pull the wool over somebody’s eyes? How would any car with 20K miles, regardless of how hard it is being used have such a shabby interior? Now let’s look at the top end. Why rebuilt, even if the seals dried out from non-use. Something smells rotten in Denmark. $30-40K is more reasonable considering the condition.
A re-spray and a top end rebuild at 21,787 miles? Future buyer needs to do their homework on this one.

Less than forthcoming qualities of this ad tell you a little something about the seller’s character. Seller is flat out telling you that if you ask, it may not disclose…at its option. Personally, this stand-offish tone rubs my fur the wrong way. NEXT!
