I’m certainly not a huge fan of the R107, and when it comes to beautiful and classic Mercedes-Benz models, it’s hardtop sibling – the C107 – probably isn’t on the top of anyone’s list. But it is an interesting car, and it has some unique history – including competing in the World Rally Championship before Audi redefined the category:

These C107s occupy an interesting spot in the marketplace; generally ignored, they offer a lot of classic Benz attributes without breaking the bank. And recently one popped up on Bring a Trailer with some neat modifications that really had me intrigued. So when a similar European-specification 280SLC popped up, I thought it was worth a look.

Due respect to the seller, but this is really not the described ‘ULTIMATE EUROPEAN CLASSIC COUPE’. The homologated 5.0 SLCs are probably the most sought after of the C107s, but as you already know it’s not the belle of the ball when it comes to Euro-spec cars. What you do gain, though, is a lot of classic Mercedes in great condition, replete with a nice color combination, better-looking Euro-spec bumpers, and an M110 inline-6 that has more horsepower than the US-spec 380SLC’s V8. It’s somewhat unfortunately that the all-glass Euro lights weren’t retained, but you could swap them in if you wanted – especially at this price. For just shy of $11,000, it’s really hard to see how you go wrong here. It’s a nicely optioned car in original condition and far from used up, and a similar SL could easily set you back double to triple that amount today. The SLC remains a budget treasure in the marketplace.
