This is an extremely clean diesel Westy from the only year when VW actually offered an oil-burner straight from the factory. As opposed to the anemic original 1.6 liter, last year this received a heart update via a brand-new 1.9-liter diesel unit straight from Volkswagen. Despite being pretty early in the Vanagon life cycle, the chassis has just 84k miles, putting together a very tidy package with a complete, fully functioning interior and nearly flawless exterior. All of this comes together for a van that appears ready for several more decades of fun.

Older Westys can make up the cheaper end of the Vanagon spectrum, but this one checks all the right boxes and deserves its strong $20k price tag. Having all parts function as they should and the reliability of a brand-new diesel is a lot to ask no matter the year. With a lot of care and plenty of investment, the seller is passing on a really nice campervan with few, if any, caveats.

For two years I was the proud owner of the exact diesel Westie, same colours, with less than 60,000 miles on it. Other than being terrible on long, rather mild hills in the Canadian prairie and the outside mirrors folding in during windstorms, the thing was unbreakable. You had to take a run at the hill, there had to be a game plan. Going through the Canadian Rockies, get used to fully loaded semitrailers passing you on any sort of incline. I thought about putting a Subaru or VW Jetta diesel in it, but in the end moving to Japan for a decade was my life path. I think about the vehicle once a week, Westies are like that, you always wish you’d not sold it.
