With prices of certain German classics on the rise, it’s easy to get dismayed, but there are still plenty of vehicles out there within reach for the enthusiast of more modest means. Case in point, the Volkswagen Cabriolet. The Mk1 Cabriolet had a particularly long production life, from 1980 through 1993, so you won’t have trouble sourcing one on the used market. Later examples, like this low mileage 1990 example for sale in Florida, came equipped with a few more niceties, such as power windows, a glass rear window, body colored bumpers and a driver’s side airbag.

I am downsizing and unfortunately do not have space to store the car. I purchased the car 2 years ago from a classic car dealer in Virgina.
I was told, the car was once owned by a local Virgina family and was supposed to be a present for the wife. She did not like the stick and they put it in a garage for their then 11 year old son to drive it when he will be old enough. He did not like the car and thus it was sold in 2012 to a VW Dealer in Virgina who sold it to the Classic Car Dealer.
I am the second owner of the car. It is in mint condition. no cosmetic tricks, no shiny sprays used ever. The rims are original as the rest of the car. The trunk has no scratches or spots in the carpet. Carpet, Floor mats, radio, seats, everything is original. It has never been restored.
The car has no corrosion at all. Everything in this car is original as it was delivered from VW in 1990. Everything works perfectly, Radio, AC. No oil consumption, Oil change was performed every 3K Miles. You can still see the wax/anti-corrosion treatment in the engine compartment. I did not pressure-wash the engine to show how unique this car is. This is a rare one-time opportunity. I hate to see the car go as I really loved it.
I am asking for a $500 deposit via paypal. The car must be picked up. The car is listed locally for sale as well. I reserve the right to end this auction at any time if the car has been sold.
I had that sinking feeling in my stomach that when I first came across this car there would be a good chance it would be saddled with the automatic gearbox. This was the same feeling I get every time I see a car on a used lot that I would otherwise like but is missing the third pedal. Luckily though, low-mileage and the 5-speed manual make this quite attractive, if in a cute, carefree sort of way. It might deter your average teenage girl from wanting it, but for those determined to learn how to shift for themselves, this would be a great little runabout.

This has to be the nicest Mk1 Cabriolet I’ve seen for sale in quite a long time. I only wish our ’87 model looked half as nice as this one does! I have no idea of what something like this should be worth; it will be interesting to see where the bidding ends.
FYI, all Rabbit Convertibles and Cabriolets came with glass rear windows.
Cindy Mancini complained to her mom about not liking her car anymore and thus got it repainted.
