1995.5 Audi S6

Winter is coming and for some of us around the country, it’s already arrived. Still want your dose of fast but need something that can handle the hazardous road conditions. Try one of these on for size: the Audi S6. Known as the Ur S4 before it got a name change halfway through its production cycle, these relatively mild looking sedans and estates had Audi’s proven 20 valve turbocharged five cylinder under the hood, providing reliable and very tunable power.

This color combination is rather somber for what is supposed to be an outright sporting saloon. Red is probably my favorite colors when it comes to these, but I’m so enamored with the Ur S4/S6 that I’d certainly take this car as is. As compared to their contemporaries, the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz 500E, these fast Audis are still rather affordable, as you can very easily scoop up a good one in the $6,000 to $9,000 range. As time marches on, it’s getting harder to find these with under 100,000 miles in such good shape, so if you’ve considered one of these in the past, now is a good opportunity to get one of these 20 valve wonders.

Very nice car, it is noteworthy that some of the sideways fun in the snow heroics are hampered by the “EDL” nanny in this version of the C4 S-car, it’s nothing more than ABS traction control. On the plus side late build S6’s have the “wide first gear” 01E, arguably the strongest manual transmission in any US-spec Audi. The plastic crossover pipe, and plastic end tank intercooler specific to the S6 represented the dawn of Audi cost cutting in the worst way possible.
