When it comes to the best of the bunch of very memorable M cars, unfortunately the M Coupe doesn’t seem to rank in the top 5. Granted, with the S54 motor fitted to later examples it should, but enthusiasts rightly lump the first series of M cars as likely the best, and for number 5 you’ve got so many great choices; the stellar and understated E34 M5, the brutal but effective E39 M5, the rev-happy E46 M3. Then there are more recent wonders, such as the 1M and V8 M cars, both in turbo and non-turbocharged forms. But in the middle of these cars lay the cool and unique M Coupe. It wasn’t the fastest, most practical or best looking M car made – but it’s a combination of many factors that make it so desirable as a package – plus, it’s still affordable and a reasonable daily driver. Is there a better package for the money right now?

I’ve said before that were I to get into one of these M Coupes, I’d really want one of the more wild color combinations. While Dakar Yellow, Estoril or Laguna Seca Blue, or Imola Red check that box nicely, Boston Green Metallic is an unusual site on any of the M cars, really. While your friends may joke that your new ride is better suited at the golf course than the race track, I think it suits this design reasonably well and for me evokes memories of the MGB GT. Of course, it’s basically better than the MG in every single way, but as a practical hatchback sports car, few cars can match the smile per dollar spent of the M Coupe. This particular example is priced at the high end of the market, but the condition is good and miles are in check. $22,000 will buy you an equal performing but much older 944 Turbo S or 968 – but if you’re more a fan of the rockets from Munich, this M Coupe is about as close as they’ve come to the legendary platform that was the 944.
