Taut, restrained and handsome. These words come to mind when describing the E38 platform 7-series, perhaps one of the most successful BMW designs in recent memory. In short wheelbase form with the M-Sport package, which adds sport seats, firmer suspension, shorter final drive, M-Parallel wheels, sport steering wheel and Shadowline trim, the conservatively styled executive express takes on a slightly more menacing look and feel. Owing to the marvel of depreciation, these cars can be had for a fraction of their original cost. While bargain-basement examples are tempting, they probably hide gremlins that will cost the asking price again to put right. Best to pay up front for a nice one, like this lovely looking example for sale in California.

This “sporty shorty” comes in one of my favorite colors, Anthracite Metallic, a moody dark metallic gray. It looks to be in great condition, with no imperfections to the exterior visible in the photos. While I would probably prefer a black interior, the light gray leather on show here looks similarly neat. As a pre-’01 model the infotainment screen is the smaller, 4:3 ratio model instead of the bigger, 16:9 version that would come in later cars. At this point, I can’t imagine anyone uses the onboard nav system, so it doesn’t really matter. The dash display shows no signs of broken pixels.
The 4.4 liter V8 puts out about 296 hp, providing plenty of oomph to get you where you’re going very briskly. Miles are modest at 77k, but around this point he M62 motor may soon develop some pricey maintenance needs (e.g. timing chain guides) so a good look at the service history and a close inspection is essential. If it checks out, the 740i offers lot of classy car for relatively little money.

these actually put out 282hp no different than a 540 of that era…
what the Sports had was the trick rear-diff. the ratio was different and gave the car nice pop…
my fav, 7 series…nice color combo as well
MDriver: I think you’re right about the HP number. I think I was looking at the metric horsepower (PS) by mistake. Thanks!
I loved these when they were new / current, and, to my eye, they have withstood the passage of time very well. Some might call it boring, but I think this is a great color combo. This particular car shows very well and I suspect someone will be really pleased with their purchase. Nice find.
It also wouldn’t hurt for dealer to drop caption and useless generic praises and provide some facts, hopefully mention some documented services.
I wonder if dealers siphon the car tanks prior to sale and have gasoline storage tank behind the office.
99.9% dealers cars comes with 1/2 gallon of gas in tank.
This one actually doesn’t have reserve light on yet, impressive indeed.
But yes, nice car, just a shame for not being sold by private owner.
Already sold – I called the dealer this morning.
