The magical $20,000 mark doesn’t buy you much Porsche. Even less when you are talking about a Porsche with an engine mounted somewhere behind the seats. You have the 914 and the Boxster, and maybe an R-title automatic 996. However, now as the years pass, we have another option. I know I already ruined the surprise, but the 987 Cayman is suddenly under the $20,000 and there are lots of them. Granted, a lot of them are the not-so powerful base Cayman with the 2.7L, but to my surprise, this is a Cayman S!

I know this isn’t the most exciting Cayman in the world, but this is the 3.4 liter with the 6-speed, so the ingredients are there. Outside of that, you get heated seats and Bose audio, and that is about it. This one does have nearly 100,000 miles so it probably explains the $20,000 price tag, but it seems pretty clean. You can blend in with these cars if that is your thing, or mess with the suspension a little and have a capable track vehicle. Either way, budget a few grand a year for service and I don’t think you can go wrong here.

I have an 06 CS with 37K miles which I bought for 27K 2 years and 4,000 miles ago. Great little fun car that I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to get into his first P car. I am aware the 09 and later model years of the 987 are more desirable and did away with (perceived) flaws from earlier years – but just get a good PPI and a car with service records / history, and you should be good to go
…a few grand a year if you’re not driving it.*
