1988 Porsche 930

The Porsche 930 has always been a personal favorite as it was the performance variant predominantly available during my youth. The performance and aesthetics both held a certain wildness that few cars could replicate without us moving well into supercar territory. At some point, it’d be fantastic to own one, but prices on these cars are on the rise, especially for an example that remains in good condition. The car featured here looks to be one of the lowest mileage I’ve come across and appears nearly pristine inside and out. Here we have a 1988 Porsche 930 located in Florida that has seen a scant 4042 miles and comes in what I’m guessing is Marine Blue, though the seller lists it simply as “Blue”. Either way, it’s a fantastic color that stands apart from the standard colors while providing the subtlety some owners might desire.

Heap of the Week: 1984 Volkswagen Jetta GLi

So few remain around these days that it’s easy to forget that in 1984 Volkswagen introduced the hot 4-door Jetta, the GLi. Like the GTi brethren, these featured an upgraded 1.8 inline-4 mated to a close ratio 5-speed transmission, as well as upgraded brakes and a few external changes to set them apart from the run-of-the-mill Jettas. Not many were produced, and again like the GTi few remain around in good shape; in fact, I can think of only one that I’ve seen in the past decade. Like me, the owner is a high performance driving enthusiast and we’ve been trucking our old Volkswagen/Audi products out to BMW HPDEs for years. Despite neither of us having the fastest car out there, it’s always fun to see his red GLi, hunkered down over very wide semi-slick tires bouncing down the front straight at Lime Rock park. Today’s GLi isn’t quite ready to do that, but offers a glimpse into a rare car that’s quite affordable and should be saved:

In an era when SUVs are the order of the day for manufacturers looking to expand profitability, it’s says something that Mercedes-Benz still sees fit to import the estate versions of the E class, in both E350 and E63 trim. There are still those of us out there who merely seek carrying capability without all the off-road fuss. This E320 Estate for sale in Florida is a great example of a car that gives you SUV carrying capability with the comfort and economy of a sedan.

Party Like It’s 1989 Week: ’89 Opel Senator B CD 3.0i

6a81a05b29_1024

Want something plush for highway cruising but not a particular fan of any of the American modern classics? Well, why not try on what GM’s Europe arm had on for size at the end of the 1980s, the Opel Senator. The Senator B was a long-wheelbase version of the Opel Omega, a car that would later go on to form the basis for the Cadillac Catera. The Senator was laid to rest after the 1993 model year, as Opel decided the new Omega would give the company enough range in the luxury segment. This Senator for sale in Northwest Germany is a top level CD model with the 3.0 liter inline-6.

1985 BMW 745i Turbo

6a81a05b29_1024

German cars are know as being exact in their engineering, and even the model designation of the turbocharged E23 7 series takes this mantra to heart. This particular 745i does not, in fact, have a 4.5 liter inline-6 as suggested by the badge on the trunk. Rather, it designates that the turbocharged powerplant under the hood has 1.4 times the power output of the normally aspirated unit it is based on. These E23 7 series sedans had the same aggressive front snout as the beloved E24 6 series and moved the BMW game forward in terms of technology, with service interval indicators, anti-lock brakes and climate control systems appearing during the production run. The 745i Turbo was offered in North America between 1979 and 1986, first with a 3.2 liter inline six and then upgraded to the 3.4 unit that we see here. This example for sale in Georgia is a Euro market model that has the optional water buffalo leather, lending quite a unique air to the interior.
