10K Friday Poor-sche Edition: 928S4 v. 944 v. 944 Turbo v. 924 v. 944 S2 v. Boxster v. Boxster S

“Poor Man’s Porsche”; while it’s a moniker usually attached to the 924 series, the reality is these days it applies to everything outside of the 911. The surge in 911 prices has been so great, that it has also pulled other lesser alternatives to the 911 up as well – try to get into a clean 912 and you’ll be surprised by the price. Even the lowly, forgotten 914 is in the mid teens for a really clean example of a flat-4 model up towards $100,000 for original 914-6 models. So does this mean you need 6-figures to be a true Porsche enthusiast? I don’t believe that’s the case – I think there are a plethora of great options at or around $10,000, so I’ve lined up an assortment. Which do you think is most worthy of wearing the crest of Stuttgart?

1993 Porsche 911 RS America – Revisit

pic

The first car we featured in our RS America Double-take has come back around for auction. Presumably, the dealer who bought it from the original seller is now looking to capitalize on the rapidly escalating market for these cars and has wasted little time in putting the car back up for sale. The asking price for this RS America in our original feature was $60,000 and with bidding for this auction already at $71,985 that’s already a decent bit of appreciation. At this point the reserve is unmet so we’ll have to see just how high this one might go.

1983 Mercedes-Benz 300SD with 58k miles

I always wonder why cars that are eco-friendly have to look so overtly different from a normal vehicle, oftentimes appearing as the automotive equivalent of a Birkenstock. Not being one to shout about my accomplishments, I like to do things a little bit more discreetly. In this case, if I was looking to gain a little bit more economy in my daily travels, I would choose a car like this 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300SD that is for sale in Florida. This vehicle comes to us by way of an estate sale. There’s not a whole lot of information to go on, but from the looks of things, this could turn out to be a very good buy.

1982 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia

$_57 (6)

I’ve been trying to find VW vans that provide more affordable alternatives to the Westfalia, which has become the E30 M3 of camper vans. Well, today’s Ivory example shows that these German mini-RVs are as treasured as the color’s namesake with a very serious asking price complementing low-mileage and some choice upgrades. While the South African lights are great and the exterior condition shows the garaged life, the interior is not the nicest we’ve seen. You could buy a brand-new, fully-loaded GTI for $10k less, making some shake their heads and walk away. Some will see this as a low-mileage gem, however, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the seller get something not too far off the asking price.
