Double Take: 964 Turbos – 3.3 vs 3.6

The 930 remains my favorite of the 911 Turbos, but that doesn’t mean I do not appreciate the greatness of its successor based off of the 964. And unlike the 930, which spent most of its life utilizing a 4-speed manual, the 964 came straight out of the box with the 5-speed transmission only available in the final year of 930 production. However, because initially the 964 carried over the 3.3 liter turbocharged engine from the 930, which was later replaced with a turbocharged 3.6 liter engine, there are a couple different options to choose from when on the market for a 964 Turbo. Though as we shall see here they fall within dramatically different cost scales. Here we will look at the two most common variants: the standard 3.3 liter 964 Turbo produced from 1990-1992 and the 911 Turbo 3.6 produced from 1993-1994. Each of these also came in a small-production Turbo S form, which remain some of the most sought after 911s on the market.

We’ll start with this 1991 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Brooklyn, with just 28,140 miles on it:

Feature Listing: 1984 Volkswagen GTi – REVISIT

How many times can you own an automotive legend on a budget? Normally on Friday, I try to look at some screaming deals in the German automotive world; but in terms of all around reputation, the original GTi is on par with cars like the Porsche 911. It was hugely influential not only on the market but on enthusiast’s expectations of what their everyday car could deliver. Practical, fun to drive, quick and relatively inexpensive, the Golf GTi is heading into its 7th iteration with the same basic formula as the original. Original, honest A1 GTis are now hard to come by, and this survivor is one of the better original examples we’ve seen with complete records and maintenance. Bidding is on its way up, but compared to some other German legends this car will remain a serious bargain.

You may remember this great looking, original and rare color combination GTi from last week. Although the car sold, the buyer failed to come through, so you get a second chance to pick up this awesome timepiece of history. Opportunities to own what many consider legendary cars don’t come along often, and usually aren’t very cheap – but these original GTis if left unmolested and in good shape like this one are near certain to appreciate over the coming years and offer you the chance to drive one of the best regarded cars ever made without breaking the bank. This car has some unbelievable records including a handwritten log from the first day of ownership by the original owner, and outside of the replaced windshield and gas cap, and a few mechanical parts is 100% OEM. This is a truly impressive survivor, and the seller has extensive shots that document the condition both above and below the car.

1990 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL Estate

Mercedes-Benz is one of those companies that has been consistent in offering estate vehicles, or the station wagon as it is known to those of us in the US. Sometimes the variety of their offerings is less rather than more, but right now, it’s pretty neat that you can order a high horsepower V8 beast under the hood of a W123 E class estate, which has been the staple 5-door offering from Mercedes. We did get the C-class estate in the form of the W203 for a few years, but Mercedes has never dabbled with an estate variant of their big boy, the S-class. Nor, frankly, have any of their competitors. A few determined coachbuilders have set out to make an S-Class estate, such as Crayford back in the 1970s with the W116 S-class. This 560SEL estate for sale in Germany is one of the best executed, most OEM looking of all the coachbuilt estates, but it comes with a hefty asking price.

1993 Porsche 911 RS America

Last week we featured a pretty rare Polar Silver Metallic RS America that had a few modifications, which will probably hold down its final selling price, but it nonetheless remains a car that we will not come across very often. Now we are going to take that level of rarity up a notch. Here we have a Fly Yellow 1993 Porsche 911 RS America, located in Maryland, with 45,000 miles on it. Unlike the Polar Silver example this RS America retains its originality and looks pristine throughout. Those who have been reading here for a while will know that I love most any bright-colored 911 and that I am particularly fond of those in yellow. So when I came across this one I instantly knew it had to be shared. This is indeed a special car.

1988 Porsche 928S4 5-speed

There’s a romantic vision I always seem to have; grabbing my wife and child, jumping in the exotic sports car and heading for the backroads for some spirited driving. That vision always seems to include some exotic; a Maserati Ghibli or perhaps even a Ferrari 400i. While Ferrari 400i prices have remained at a level attainable for mere mortals, the Ghibli has rocket well out of reach. But the Ferrari has problems, too – well, it’s a Ferrari. Last time I checked, maintaining those lovely stallions isn’t exactly cheap. But there is a much more practical supercar also born in the 1970s with futuristic styling and it’s a perennial favorite of ours; I’m speaking, of course, of the Porsche 928. Sure, compare the 928 to a Volkswagen Scirocco and it’s a very complicated, expensive car to run. But compare it to some of the exotics it ran against, and the 928 almost seems like a bargain to maintain. Great build quality, styling which has weathered the test of time and legendary GT performance make for a quite desirable package which is still very affordable in today’s world:
