Three things we like here at GCFSB are Swedish cars, fast wagons and manual gearboxes. Sometimes, we are fortunate to come across a combination of these three genres in one package. The last ten years have been good to fans of fast wagons, with choices ranging from the bonkers Cadillac CTS-V Wagon to a hauler that Mercedes-Benz won’t give up on, the E-Class AMG Estate with a bunch of fast Audi Avants in between. Volvo was a bit of an outlier in this game, but nonetheless put forward a quite capable wagon in the form of the V70R in 2003. This wagon had a 2.5 liter, turbocharged inline-5 under the hood cranking out 300 horsepower hooking up to a Haldex all-wheel drive system. And yes, you could order one with a third pedal. Rounding off the package was Volvo’s 4C suspension system and Brembo brakes. This V70R for sale in Richmond, Virginia wears a unique Flash Green hue and has a host of IPD performance upgrades.

The original Volkswagen Beetle is one of those curious cars that leads two lives. Devised as bare bones transportation and used by some as such, the car has also been the base for some impressive restorations. Some people like to take the route and modify with various Porsche bits while others prefer the dune buggy approach. And some like to go for the Cal look, popular ever since Beetle production was in full swing. This restored 1962 Cabriolet for sale in Pennsylvania in Gulf Blue looks sharp sitting on wider tires with deep dish wheels and is on offer just in time for the warmer weather about to hit on the East Coast.

Comments closedDo you ever see a car and think “Boy, there must be some interesting stories behind those miles”? I do, be they poorly modded 1980s Mercedes-Benz models, tired old Porsche race cars, rusty BMWs posing with canoes on the roof (yes, there’s one on eBay right now) or pretty much any Audi ever. But today, I stumbled across something that you just don’t see often. I’d say ever, but of course that would preclude today, and I try not to be overly prone to hyperbole – so let’s just say that were you to buy and drive this Opel Kadett L Wagon, you would be extremely unlikely to ever stumble across another in your commute. And it certainly must have some stories; the dent on the hood, the woodgrain paneling (that was factory, believe it or else!), the minilites, the….DVD player?

3 CommentsJeremy Clarkson was fond of saying that sticking a Turbo badge on a car made it better. Didn’t matter the car, if it said Turbo it was good! In this way, the 911 market agrees completely with Jeremy. An air-cooled 911 Turbo is a highly sought after commodity in any guise, and for good reason. Enhanced performance trumps almost anything but the rarest of the naturally-aspirated models and given that a Turbo had a higher cost of entry to begin with we can understand why the market for them has remained so strong. As the last of the breed the 993 Turbo has held a special place in the heart of most Porschephiles, even if its all-wheel drive system dims the ferocity and purity of its dynamics to some degree. But the fact that it is the most advanced air-cooled model and, arguably, the prettiest of all the 911 Turbos lends it credence any debate and it is sure to maintain a high place within the 911 market for many years to come. The example we see here is a Guards Red 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Texas, with Tan interior and only 8,646 miles on it.

If yesterday’s 2008 E350 wasn’t quite doing it for you, then perhaps stepping back four years will get you on board with the long roof Benz program. This 2004 E500 4Matic Touring looks crisp as can be in Capri Blue and the grey leather interior with dark wood accents really ties the whole package together. I think this is one of the best color combinations you can get on these or just about any car really. The polished silver wheels and chrome grille isn’t bothersome as usual when paired with this paint , a testament to just how nice a shade of blue it is. Given that the car has had 4 owners, all whom have lived in climates known to be less than friendly to cars so I’d look very closely for pitting and chips in the paint. It appears to be in the claimed “Like New” condition but until you see it in person, you never know.
What is clear is that the original buyer wanted to maximize the sporting aspirations of this 5.0L V8 powered wagon. AMG wheels and a factory installed AMG bumper do give this example a tastefully aggressive look. The aforementioned lump has just enough juice to backup the attitude, 302hp from a 5.0L engine isn’t the best hp per litre ratio, especially in a 4,320 lb car. However, with 339lb-ft of torque and a 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds, I don’t think you or your passengers would say the car is slow, especially if the folks in the rear facing third row seat.
