1991 BMW M5 with 15,000 Miles

I still remember the magic of my first ride in a M5. Although my father would end up owning one and still does, it was not the E28 like his that started my love affair with the inline-6 equipped super-sedans. Rather, it was a then-new 1991 E34 model that provided me a ride I was not quite fully prepared for. Coming from a background of family Toyotas, you can imagine the difference when full-throttle was applied to the legendary S38B36 motor on an onramp. It felt, quite literally, like we were taking off. The E34 never seemed to gain the traction of the E28’s appeal for many enthusiasts, but for me, it’s the model I love more. That ride remains the only time I’ve been in an E34 M5, but having spent many years getting to drive the family’s subsequent ’95 525i, every time I got behind the wheel I dreamed that awesome twin-cam M50 was its bigger brother. The market still hasn’t awoken to these last-of-the-handbuilt, last of the original M88 derived cars – a shame, considering how superlative they are in many senses. But when one pops up with only 15,500 miles on the clock, you better believe I took notice:

1977 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera

I have really taken a liking to these early Turbos over the years. There is no one specific reason why I prefer them over the later versions of the 930, or even most of the later 911 Turbos, but it is the coming together of a variety of factors that really gets to me. Some of it comes down to appearance as the early cars, with the whale tail, appear somewhat sleaker, ever though their dimensions are the same as the later cars. They ARE lighter as the 930 gradually increased in mass during its long production run, with the early versions coming in around 300 fewer pounds than the final year 930. Add to that their historical place within the 911’s lineage and you get a really nice combination. The market has responded similarly as the first two model years (and the first year especially) have shown significant increases in value only rivaled by the final year 930, which was the only year to feature a 5-speed transmission rather than what had been the standard 4-speed. In a rare, period specific color, such as the Ice Green Metallic we see here (also known as Silver Green Diamond Metallic) these are catapulted into another dimension entirely showcasing both beauty and history in one package. That brings us to this: a 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera, located in California, with 141,285 miles on it.

1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 – REVISIT

As we get familiar with a new C-class this year, let’s take one more look at the car which started the Baby Benz craze, the 190E. We featured this particular W201 back in March and it’s back up on offer at the same price.

1986 Audi Coupe GT

Being a huge fan of the B2 Audi, and with so few floating around, you’d be potentially forgiven for believing that I’d remember ever single one I see. But even though there are small amounts of them still floating around in comparison to the E30 market, let’s not forget that the Coupe GT was a relatively popular model for Audi, with over 100,000 produced. A reported 22,000 of those made it to the U.S., with the majority being the early Type 81 model with rectangular headlights. Only about 8,500 were the later, higher horsepower post 1985 models with updated interiors and exteriors – for argument’s sake, not many more than the original M3. So, it’s fair to say that I do recognize a fair amount of the survivors that pop up as I’d guesstimate that, unlike the E30, less than half of those originally imported post-85 cars still survive today. This one, in particular, looked instantly familiar – but not because of the color; in fact, in spite of it:

1981 BMW 528i – REVISIT

This classy E12 that we featured last summer is still looking for a home. I would assume that the 300k miles have led interested parties elsewhere, which is a shame. It’s still just as clean inside and out with the great Zender bits. 10 months and $1k later, it’s a better deal on a clean survivor that needs a good home!
