While the Audi TT isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, I really respect the company for launching what was – at the time – a huge departure from it’s standard lineup. Remember, it was nearly 21 years ago that the TT Concept launched at the Frankfurt Auto Show. For perspective, while the Coupe quattro was long-gone from these shores, the B4 Coupe was still in production when the TT was first shown to the public. And when it launched way back in 1998, it was nothing short of a revolution compared to the outgoing model. Amazingly, Audi managed to keep nearly every aspect of the show car for the production model and the TT Roadster replaced the quite long in the tooth but pretty B4 Cabriolet. The new TT Roadster was offered in two configurations initially – hairy-chested 225 horsepower quattro and more hair-dresser 180 horsepower front drive form. Later, the 3.2 VR6 would be added in DSG dual-clutch quattro form only and it was this run that would round out Mk.1/8N TT production a decade ago next week. On its way out, the TT got even a bit more shouty when the company introduced a new color – Papaya Orange – to the lineup:

Those of you who follow me over at Flüssig Magazine may have read my writeup on the ’94 928 GTS 5-speed for sale at Porsche Main Line. In that piece, I got a little sentimental and expressed my enthusiasm for tracking down cars that are, as-yet “undiscovered.†I mentioned that I’ve had a lot of success with tracking down unknown GTS’s thanks to much persistence, due-diligence, and many emails and phone calls. I also mentioned that there are a few cars that I’ve tried to uncover that continue to elude me. This ’94 GTS is one of those cars.
Advertised as a one-owner GTS with 30,000 original miles, the history of this car seems rather banal (in a good way). Purchased new at Princeton Porsche in 1994, the car has been serviced regularly there, and lived its entire life in New Hope, PA. The car is gorgeous, and is outfitted in my favorite color combination of black/tan. Options include the deletion of rubstrips, black carpet (cashmere interiors usually came with cashmere carpets), and a built-in radar detector.

Comments closedSince red is a traditional Christmas color, I figured we would search out something extra special in that hue today. This 2002 M Coupe for sale in New Jersey is one of those 678 M Coupes to have the S54 engine under the bonnet, showing just under 22,000 miles on the odometer. I always marvel at cars like these which seemingly escaped the watchful eyes of the bean counters in accounting to wind up on the showroom floor. At a time when crossovers are proliferating the BMW lineup, it’s nice to look back at some cars that made this company’s bones as a car for driving enthusiasts.

Comments closedAs Santa streaked across the sky last night, so too this 535i sailed from Germany to America, ready to bestow a lovely present upon some good boy or girl. It’s a nice early example of the E34 with the 3.4 liter M30B35, updated from the E28 generation with newer fuel injection an a higher compression ratio to yield 208hp, a 26hp improvement over the B34. This example appears to have been a continuing project for its owners and now sports additions on the exterior, interior, and engine bay to make it more than your average E34. An M5’s steering wheel and leather seats look great and are complimented by Schmidmann bit and short shifter, while the same company provided a subtly aggressive bodykit and racing headers. Classic 3-piece, 17″ BBS Style 5s bring the Motorsports feel as well. It’s no M5 or M540i, but it is a nicely-styled and unique European E34.
