1997 Mercedes-Benz SL320 40th Anniversary Edition

401

To continue on the theme of non-traditional colored R129s, today we have a SL320 that not only has a unusual exterior color but an inside has a color hereto unseen on the legendary Mercedes roadster. In 1997, decided to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the SL with a special edition SL320 and SL500. All painted in Quartz Blue Metallic, the 6-cylinder SL320 is more rare with only 250 examples produced while the SL500, those all painted in Crimson Metallic, had twice as many with 500 being built. Apparently Mercedes-Benz felt that special exterior color wasn’t enough to set these cars apart. So let’s find out what is inside this 40th Anniversary Edition for sale in Florida.

1967 Porsche 912

If I’m honest, an expensive 912 is always a tough feature. Because the cost runs counter to how many of us tend to approach the 912 from the start, i.e. an inexpensive 911 alternative, then raising that price firmly into 911 territory raises a lot of questions. But this 912 seemed so pretty that it was impossible to pass up. The eye-catching color that is drawing so much of my attention is Bahama Yellow, one of the earliest bright yellows Porsche offered that possesses a slight burnt orange hue that distinguishes it from some of the lighter and more lemoney yellows. I think for many that shift in the spectrum makes Bahama Yellow a more attractive option and gives the color more depth. The particular 912 wearing it here is a 1967 Coupe meaning it is one of the original short-wheelbase models.

Motorsports Monday: 1986 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V

Motorsports Monday has become a bit predictable. First, I am apparently the only one interested in it. Second, it probably involves a Porsche or BMW. And lastly, that means that it boils down to generally two models – the 911 or M3. Yet every week I still type “Race Car” into the search function of eBay, resilient in the belief that eventually something new will pop up. Every once in a while I’m rewarded with a GTi or very rarely an Audi that has been set up for track duty, but today’s feature is a pretty unique beast. Apparently raced since new, this Volkswagen Scirocco 16V was constructed to compete in IMSA. Normally the domain of Group C/GTP prototypes in the 1980s, IMSA had support series such as International Sedan (IS) and Radial Sedan (RS) race series, later to become the popular Showroom Stock class populated by more domesticated beasts you generally would see on the road:

1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL

The Mercedes-Benz 560SEL was the definitive über sedan for more than a decade beginning in the early 1980s. They weren’t particularly eye-catching or glitzy but had a refined, tasteful appearance in a way only a classic Mercedes-Benz could pull off. With a rear seat that was almost five feet wide, passengers were treated to the utmost comfort and the driver had adequate power at his disposal with the M117 V8 under the hood. Want to look like a diplomat for a day? This 1987 560SEL in Desert Taupe for sale in Illinois is a good way to do just that. For those thinking a classic S-class in good condition with low miles is out of reach, read on.

2014 Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic Sport

To be honest, I heaved a sigh of relief the day I sold my 2007 Mercedes-Benz C230 Sport. I felt as if the compact executive sedan was becoming too ubiquitous for the upwardly mobile in my area, especially those wearing an Audi, BMW or Mercedes badge. To this day, I’m happy with the choice I made to buy a used 2006 MINI Cooper S, as it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. A few months back, while on a business trip to South Africa, my father called and informed me he traded in his W202 C280 for a 2014 C300 4Matic in Dolomite Brown Metallic, like the car we see here for sale in Texas. I didn’t give much thought to the W204 C-class when it replaced the W203 C-class shortly after I bought my C230 Sport. Given that the W205 C-class has a turbo four-cylinder engine, lack of start-stop override and a navigation screen that looks like an iPad slapped on the dash, it has me eyeing these late model W204 C300s with their 3.5 liter V6 a bit more closely.
