2019 Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe

While it seems like the majority of the world has switched to SUVs in order to haul around as much empty air as possible, I’m here to cheer on the legacy of the full-size touring coupe. Especially those from Mercedes-AMG. Make no mistake, Mercedes wouldn’t produce these cars if there wasn’t a market for them, especially when the base S550 coupe started at well over $100,000. That number got even crazier when you consider the S65 AMG coupe started at $242,000 without options and regularly sold well north of $250,000.

Today, we have the younger brother S63 AMG coupe with the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with 603 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. Starting price? $170,000. A real bargain considering these go face-to-face with the Bentley Continental GT and even the Rolls-Royce Wraith. That’s even true if they are still listed for around sticker price like this one up for sale in Texas is.

2006 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe

One of the things I never tire of seeing is cars with seemingly innocent exteriors and totally wild interiors. There is something about the surprise of opening the doors and seeing the totally unexpected rather than the typical black or tan. On this 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera S, we have exactly that.

On the outside, it’s a totally common Seal Grey. This is a color to get lost in the crowd. However, once you open those doors, you are blasted with Terracota leather on almost every surface. Sign me up! Well, on second thought, maybe not at this price.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 300GE

One of the biggest jumps in values over the past two years has been the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. It seems that no model was spared in the G world, as almost everything saw a spike a value. Pre-2020, finding an early-2000s G500 in decent shape for around $25,000 wasn’t a problem. Now, those trucks are well over $30,000 and it only gets crazier from there. With the pre-2002 imports, things get a little more complicated. Given all of these trucks are imports with varying degrees of condition of specifications, you really only have a ballpark based on recent sales. However, that might only be a handful given their rarity, so values tend to be a bit more suggestive when talking about a fixed asking price. Today’s G, a short wheelbase 300GE, is one of those situations.

1989 BMW 325i M-Tech II

Back in August 2021, I took a look at one of the two variations of M Technic II options offered in the US – the Appearance Package:

1991 BMW 325i M-Tech II Convertible

A third kit – the M Technic Sport Package – was also available abroad on coupes, and so that’s what we’re looking at today – an ’89 coupe imported from Japan. It’s equipped with the exterior body kit, with front and rear bumper covers, sill covers, and a unique rear spoiler. You also got front sport seats, a limited-slip differential, Shadowline trim, and M sport suspension. This one is also claimed to have only 21k miles, and it’s a fan-favorite “slicktop” model that was ordered without a sunroof. The price? Well, let’s just say “to be expected”….even though it’s an automatic.

1979 Audi Fox Turbodiesel

For such an important vehicle, there’s very little fanfare that surrounds the Audi B1. Badged the 80 in Europe and the Fox in the United States, Audi’s small front-drive sedan was a complete transformation for the brand which was emerging from the reshuffling of DKW and Auto Union. Mercedes-Benz had a hand in bringing 4-stroke engine technology to Auto Union in the 1950s and early 1960s, and but freed of their reigns, the Audi engineers produced an all-new motor for the clean-sheet B1. It was the EA827, and it (and the B1) would go on to be the basis for basically every Audi/Volkswagen product since 1972. The 80 was the first to launch, but quickly the 80’s platform would be used to produce the first Volkswagen Dasher (née Passat) and, engine turned transversely, then the Golf and Audi 50. The Golf’s platform created the Scirocco and Jetta, while 50 was then the basis for the Polo, and the all-new Volkswagen lineup was complete. So while most internet comments will sometimes dismiss modern Audis as little more than re-badged VWs, you can now remind them that historically it was the opposite. The 80s traditional longitudinal engine layout ended up being convenient a few years later to help spawn the mighty Quattro, too.

Motor Trend (and noted automotive historian Karl Ludvigsen) called the 80 the “best new affordable small sedan in the world” in May 1973. Horsepower was modest from the 1.5-liter version of the EA827 at only 75, but then the weight was quite modest, too – curb weight of the sunroof-equipped model was still under 1,900 lbs and fully laden the 80 weighed less than an empty B2 4000CS quattro. Capable of over 30 mpg, the Fox sold surprisingly well in the gas-crunch era as a result – Audi sold 142,511 of them here. While that number sounds modest by today’s standards, consider for a moment that Audi sold only 123,764 of the Fox’s successor, the 4000, in total.

Yet today, finding an Audi Fox seems like something of a minor miracle – and this one looks serviceable, with a turbodiesel swap thrown in for good measure. Hey, gas is expensive these days!
