1983 Porsche 911SC Cabriolet

$_4 (1)

As temperatures continue to be bitterly cold, what better time to look at a convertible! At the very least this will allow those of us mired in winter to daydream of the sun and wind hitting our face rather than ice, snow, and the ever prevalent road salt. I’ve featured numerous Targas during these cold months and for a while the Targa was the only open-top option Porsche made available for the 911. It was not until 1983, with the model we see here, that the full open-top 911 experience could be had by Porsche buyers. An ’83 Cabriolet is an interesting model to pursue as it possesses the talking point trivia as the first and only MY 911SC available as a Cabriolet, while also sitting in a very nice spot on the 911 value-curve. Interesting to talk about, top-down driving, and stout engines promising many miles of motoring enthusiasm: always an excellent combination. Here we have a Guards Red 1983 Porsche 911SC Cabriolet, located in Memphis, with around 73,000 miles on it.

This of course is the last production year model of the iconic 3 liter 911SC – and the first year for the cabriolet since 1965. These are “one year only” SC cabs and finding one in extremely well-kept condition such as this are getting harder and harder every day. Having only 72,000 original documented miles since new makes this car an even better example, having always been garaged and well cared for……having spent it’s entire life in the southeast United States. Iconic Guards red over black and everything is in working order and it includes the owner’s manual, maintenance booklet, tools, tire inflator, convertible top “boot” cover, car cover, all keys, etc. Top is in beautiful condition with no tears and rear window is clear. All components such as steering, brakes, clutch, gearbox and suspension are without issues and car handles perfectly and pulls strongly with no hesitation. Tires are very good and Fuchs are virtually un-marked…….all glass is good as well. Rear engine cover was bumped slightly in the past and was replaced with a factory cover, painted to match properly and the rear wings were blended to professional standards – much of the remaining paint is factory and overall paint condition is very good. All stickers remain in place from the factory and only the radio has been updated. Last owner purchased the cab in the year 2000 with just 38,000 miles and there are maintenance records from 2000-2015, as well as the maintenance book with several stamps from delivery. There is one spot on the hood – about the size of a quarter that has been touched up and I will include a photo in the listing. There also is a factory short shift that has been installed………this is a very solid, never abused example of a strong 911 model that will only increase in value.
I reserve the right to end this listing at any time as the car is for sale locally as well.

As a driver-quality 911 this sits in a nice spot with very reasonable mileage and just the right year to extract some good value out of the total package. I have not seen anything to suggest that these trade at a premium due to being the only model year of the 911SC Cabriolet – for instance relative to the 1984 Carrera Cabriolet – though I could understand if eventually that were the case. The overall condition of this 911SC looks good, though I might inquire how the engine cover was “bumped slightly” since that could mean a variety of things, some of which would be worth additional investigation. Otherwise this comes with most everything it should, including recent maintenance history. Bidding currently sits at $25,300 with reserve unmet and I’d think if this could be had for around $30K then that would make for a pretty good deal.

As you noted the 83 cab is sort of a special car. It’s the first cab since 1965 and it’s the last year for the SC, thus the only year SC cab. There probably is a little collectability premium in that. This car looks pretty straight from the photos. I have some questions on the shot of the door jamb sticker. If I was a buyer I would want to see it in person or see a high res shot of that sticker. It looks like there has been paint work there. Even still if it has had the paint work it appears to be a high quality job. My guess is the seller is looking for money close or into the $40’s. If you’re a 911 cab buyer and you’re looking to spend that kind of money then maybe this one’s worth looking at. If you’re looking for a bargain it’s probably not going to be this car.

every time I see one of these I’m reminded of the street race between James Woods (Ferrari 308)& Jeff Bridges in the movie Against All Odds…LOL
