2000 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG

AMG models underwent an interesting adolescence when they were absorbed into Mercedes-Benz properly. At their birth they were the wild child, making bad boys out of unassuming Benzs by adorning them with spoilers, giant wheels and larger than life motors. But then there was a calming period when Mercedes started offering AMG wheels and body styling on basically every model, making the late 1990s and into 2000s hard to identify a true AMG from the run of the mill cars with big wheels. Since then, AMG has truly blossomed into a full-blown psychopathic anti-social Prius killing Frankenstein maker, but the cars of the early 2000s were more subtle and fly much lower on the radar. One of the best examples of this is the original E55 – a car outshone by both it’s father 500E/E500 and the ubiquitous M5. Consequently, a smart buyer can pick up one of these Autobahn masters for not much money. Today’s example is a perfect case in point:

I spent almost a year looking for the best, low mileage W210 E55 AMG I could find. And found it a few months ago, but sadly a house purchase required far more cash then I expected. So after selling an Alfa, a GTI, I now have to sell my AMG. The car is amazingly clean, and looks as good in person as it does in the photos. Underneath, inside and under the hood all are clean and show how well maintained and pampered this vehicle has been. The exterior and interior of this car are very impressive.

I bought the car from the second owner. The car fax is a little confusing since he leased it as a used vehicle in 2000 then bought it off lease. The paper work that comes with the vehicle will verify that the second owner started ownership in 2000 when the car had around 15k on it. The car has a clean car fax (which I can email to you if you are interested). There are no accidents or issues. I have most of the service records for the vehicle which show that it was usually maintained at the Mercedes Benz dealer. I had Mercedes Benz do a pre-purchase inspection and they found no problems. The brakes are at 50%, the tires are Michelin Pilot Sports all around with good tread. The car does not use any fluids. All the gadgets, buttons, windows, power sunshades, headlight washers, AC and etc all work. The only fault is I only have the one key, and it sometimes says there is a bulb out even though all the lights work. This car was always garaged (and still is), and has never been driven in winter. The wheels have no curb rash. You can tell this car has always been loved.

I do have the car for sale locally and recently had an interested buyer do a thorough inspection of the car. He found a few issues that initially raised some concern on my part. The passenger side valve cover gasket has some very slight oil residue on the front, and when he read the car’s OBD outlet he found the code for a possible oxygen sensor code. I called the Mercedes Benz dealer that did the pre-purchase inspection and voiced my concern about these issues. They expressed that all E55 AMGs of this vintage have some oil residue on the valve cover gaskets and that they were not concerned. As for the oxygen sensor they were not concerned since the car passed emissions with no problems and runs and drives with no issues. I am disclosing everything I know about this vehicle. It looks beautiful, is solid and tight with no rattles, shakes, or noises of any sort. Like everyone says “I would not hesitate to drive this car across the country” and in this case it would be the perfect ride! I am driving the car a few times a week so the miles are going up. I forgot to ad that the transmission service was just done. There were no issues with the transmission, it shifted smoothly and has no problems. But since I planned on keeping this car for a long time the service was done. Mercedes Benz fluid was used, all the fluid from the pan and converter was drained, new filter, upgraded electrical plug, and filled perfectly using optical thermometer. The oil was just changed at the Mercedes Dealer when they did the pre-purchase inspection.

The other item to clear up is that is says four owners on the car fax when it is only three. The second and third owners are the same person since he leased the vehicle then bought it out at the end of the lease. Then I purchased the car from him.

$11,000 is well shy of what the equivalent M5 would bring, and even in some cases less than E34 M5s. Heck, we’ve even seen original S4s and 200 quattros start to bring this sort of money. With lower miles in the classic and signature silver over black, the seller has been seemingly very up front about the condition of the car and needs – of which it has few. The car looks in very impressive condition and much nicer than the last E55 I found for V8 week a few months back. If you’re looking for a fast executive sedan that you can generally hide pretty well in and afford to keep, this might just be a great option for you.


Motorsport Monday: 2006 Porsche Cayman S

If you want to hit the track in a Porsche, there are many ways to do it. You can buy an old 911, spend a ton of money modifying it and keeping it running. You can buy an even older 911, spend a ton of money modifying it, and even more keeping it running. But if you want a great handling, well set up flat-6 car that’s both competitive and easy on the wallet – in Porsche terms – is to look towards the Cayman. I instructed a friend with a Cayman S a few years ago at Monticello and got a chance to drive his then-new PDK Cayman S back to back with another friend’s track-biased Lotus Elise.

In the twisties, the Cayman didn’t have the go-cart feel of the Lotus for sure, but considering it completely stock, it wasn’t far off and it sure pulled harder on the straights! It was also much more forgiving and less-pucker inspiring than the Lotus; I’ve driven that particular Lotus on several occasions at several different tracks, and while it never got out of shape much at all during my drives the spinning top image was never far from my mind. When I drove the Porsche, that image couldn’t have been farther from my head – it was rock solid and confidence inspiring. Now a few years on, the Cayman has become a very popular race option and today’s example has been fully kitted for the track:

The seller claims $90K invested, and that sounds about right from the look and build sheet. I’m not a fan of the alternately colored front bumper, but I am a fan of the Interseries classic 917 liveries, and my favorite has to be the Martini Racing “Hippie” 917 colors that appeared at both Le Mans on the 917LH and Watkins Glen on the 917K. Somehow, the swooping lines really suit the Cayman’s profile to me. Otherwise, I can’t say that there’s much I’d change here. It’s a solid build which I think is appropriately priced. It’s treading on early 911 GT3 street model money, and for the long term that’d be the smart car to buy. But if you want to have fun without worrying about long-term collect-ability, it’s pretty hard to beat this package in a Porsche!


2002 Audi S4 Avant – No Reserve

A fully stock S4 Avant is the unicorn dream of many an Audi fan, but most of them are dreaming of the 6 speed variant. This car looks splendid in silver, and I’m glad the original Avus alloys are there; but as before they’re showing typical curb contact and the black leather isn’t my favorite. There is no mention of maintenance performed but the miles are fairly low; I’d probably want to get the timing belt checked before I ran up the tach too many times. Otherwise this car seems pretty ready for the winter commute – throw some snow tires onto those Avus rims or source some of the super rare 16″ Speedline options and have a blast this winter! It will be very interesting to see where the bidding ends on this car, but I’d expect it to finish between $10,000 and $12,000 considering the condition and mileage. Time to throw your hat in the ring!

One of the items that grabs the attention of some M enthusiasts are the small details that didn’t make it to the U.S. on European M-models. 2003 Audi S8

I’ll be honest – this car haunts my dreams. Well, not this particular car, but any Avus Silver Pearl 2003 S8. I first saw one a few years ago at Coventry Motor Car – well, when I say I saw one, they actually had two there that day. I sat and contemplated how I could get myself into one and cursing the existence of such a tempting combination. Prior to that, I still was in love with the S8, but I was pretty sure I’d be happy with a Ming Blue one. I could gush about the S8 performance and package all day long, and this example looks well cared for with typical miles. The rebuilt transmission is one less thing to worry about, though S8 transmission failure is less common than A8. With everything up to date and all records, I think the car is pretty appropriately priced – while you can get into a higher mileage S8 under $10,000, they’re often not the ones to buy and a trip or two to the mechanic to sort them will quickly put you into this car’s price point. As with many of the Volkswagen products that are complicated, you’re best bet is to find the nicest one you can. Here it is. Never gonna give you up, S8!


1988 Porsche 924S Special Edition – No Reserve

A few months ago was the last time we featured a nice Porsche 924S. That particular 1988 Porsche 924 Special Edition was the same model that I’m writing up today, but unlike that car this particular model has the original staggered phone dials and shows off that neat model-specific interior a little more. The 924S remains a solid value with clean looks, great performance and low ownership costs. Today’s example looks quite stealthy dressed in black, and kitted out with most of Porsche’s “go faster” bag of tricks from the 1980s these last of the run were the fastest normally aspirated 924s produced:

Selling our 1998 Porsche 924SE
This was the last year Porsche made the 924 & this is a true “real” special edition “SE” model

In 1988, the 924S’ final year of production, power increased to 160 bhp (119 kW; 162 PS) matching that of the previous year’s Le Mans spec cars and the base model 944 (itself detuned by 3 bhp (2 kW; 3 PS) for 1988). This was achieved using different pistons which raised the S’ compression ratio from 9.7:1 to 10.2:1, the knock-on effect being an increase in the octane rating, up from 91 RON to 95. This made the 924S slightly faster than the base 944 due to its lighter weight and more aerodynamic body.

It’s nice to see a no reserve auction to see what this model will bring. Often 924s are in a horrible state of disrepair or seem to be in incredible condition, and values or asking prices therefore also are pretty polarized. The last 924S SE I wrote up had the decals missing on this car, slightly less miles but failed to sell in the $5,000 – $6,000 range. This car presents pretty well for a driver in the photos and seems to be pretty honestly presented, but despite that bidding is quite low at $1,700 at time of writing with a few days left. I’d suspect this car will struggle to break mid-$4000 range – a price at which it’s a heck of a deal in my opinion. If they had only called it “Club Sport”, people would be paying 3 to 4 times that rate for one of these models…


Axis Power 2: 1978 Volkswagan Bus with Acura 3.2 V6 swap

In my continuing line of “Axis Power” vehicles, here’s one I wasn’t expecting to come across. Motor swaps on Volkswagen Vans are pretty popular; I’ve seen a bunch, from Audi turbocharged inline-5 and Subaru flat-4 conversions, Eurovan diesel swaps, 1.8T and even the crazy odd-911 or SVX flat-6 swap. But this is a new one to me – dropping the 3.2 V6 out of a Acura CL Type S. Rated at 290 hp, it’s a little over four times the horsepower the model originally came with. Think about that in an M5! Of course, the M5 was intended to go fast, whereas the Bus was intended…well, not to. Despite this, the execution on this crazy ride is pretty cool:

Up for sale is a 1978 VW Bus, it is powered by an Acura 3210 cc V6. This motor is out of a 2001 Acura CL Type S and puts out approx 290HP. Working full time on this bus, that’d be 36 weeks straight to complete it – this bus has obviously experienced a major overhaul. I love the color combination, the custom wood interior is pretty neat, and NACA ducts look cool on just about anything. The integration of the tailpipes is an especially neat detail, as is the burled wood shift knob. Overall the only item I really don’t like is the wheels, which I would probably swap out for some original steelies or even neater, some 911 Fuchs. Now, that would look sweet. Bidding is in the $8K range with reserve still on; I’d expect the seller is hoping to make it solidly into the mid-teens on this creation but I’m not sure it’ll do it. What’s the price you’d pay for such a creation?


Reader Ride Success Story – Buying a Market-Breaking Callaway GTi


There are plenty of internet tire kickers who comment on how much a vehicle is or isn’t worth. Heck, it’s what we do every day! And while the market tends to be pretty well defined on most models, there are occasionally outliers who throw us a curve ball we just weren’t expecting. Such was the case with last month’s low mile 1983 Callaway Turbo Volkswagen GTi I wrote up. I have to admit, I was pretty excited when I originally found it (though, probably not as much as the new owner’s description below!). Why? Well, when I came across it, I had mixed feelings – with 18,000 miles on the clock and being a rare Callaway Turbo model, this GTi was drawing very strong bidding despite having a somewhat poor description and photos. While it was fascinating, it didn’t quite add up – but it was sure to draw attention. It turns out I wasn’t alone in that feeling.

I paid particularly close attention to this GTi because I thought it was heading towards being the highest selling A1 GTi I can remember seeing. As the bidding increased, we here at GCFSB exchanged excited messages such as “unreal” and “that’s crazy”. I tuned in for the end of bidding, too, just to see where it ended up – an astounding $17,754. To me it sounded like a lot of money for any A1 Volkswagen. Imagine my surprise when the next day in my inbox was a message from the new owner of the car who had tuned in to my post, explaining the purchase. I had to know more – who would pay so much for a 1983 GTi, and what was the motivation? The story was perhaps even more surprising than the purchase amount, and ranks pretty high on my list feel-good stories of 2013. I can’t say enough about how enthusiastic the car’s new owner, Lance, has been about sharing his story and time. People like Lance are true car enthusiasts and the story of his GTi purchase is a great reminder of why we all love this hobby. As I can’t do it any more justice, I’ll let Lance tell the tale:


GCFSB: How long have you been looking for a GTi, and was the Callaway GTi your goal or a bonus?

Lance: I have a fond memory of when my father used to drive our 1st Generation GTI when I was about 12 years old and just a kid. We had a long cul de sac driveway that was approximately a quarter of a mile which seemed like a mile when I was a kid. My father who was my best friend and mentor used to flat shift from first to second on our driveway and I’d continually ask him to stop the car & do it again – over & over again… it was a blast when I was a youngster. Nevertheless I looked for 8 long years to find a good representation of a stock VW GTI that was identical to the one I remembered. My mission was to surprise him with it. Unfortunately he passed away in 2004 from a rare disease called amyloidosis, in his honor we started the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation – more at http://chipmiller.org. I discontinued my hunt for the GTI due to his passing. However my friend, Tim Scanlon, remembered that I was looking for a black GTI and shot me an email with pics of the car in 2009 (5 years from his passing)- needless to say I purchased it without hesitation.

I’m certain my father would be proud of the black GTI purchase, it’s a pretty sweet little car, it drives perfect and even has functional AC, lights & etc. Life is good was his motto and I do my best to live by it! I guess for me the memory from when I was a child is what really strikes me. The GTI was a badass little street rocket and I was lucky enough to have a cool father that wasn’t afraid to bang through the gears on our driveway!

Fast forward 4 years…

I woke up early one morning and decided to look on ebay through my cell phone without waking up my wife. I searched for “Renntech” and was checking out a few cars that popped up, nothing really grabbed my attention. Next I did a search for “Callaway” and the first thing that popped up was a 1983 Volkswagen GTI Callaway with 18,000 miles. I about fell out of my bed! I read the advertisement and was excited as can be. I actually woke my wife up at this point and told her I’m going to buy a new car! I bid on it first and quickly became the high bidder. Irony has it, I really wasn’t looking to purchase a car – I was more just looking to see some neat rides. It never hurts to dream, right?!


GCFSB: Tell us a bit about your pre-purchase inspection – how did it go, how was it arranged, and were there any surprises?

Lance: It worked quite well asking on VWvortex.com if someone with knowledge lives close by where the vehicle is listed for sale. There were a couple of details that concerned me about the ad on ebay. 1) the images were terrible and didn’t show enough details of the vehicle being sold 2) the seller had zero (0) feedback 3) the engine bay looked older than an 18,000 mile car 4) I sent out some questions pertaining to the vehicle and never heard back for the first 48 hours 5) the ad was written oddly, meaning it was an original owner car but didn’t appear to be written by the owner. I decided the safest thing for me to do was have someone go do a pre-purchase inspection of the car. This would allow me to know if the car is what the ad states it is and potentially get some much better pictures sent my way without having to drive 5 1/2 hours each way. When roaming on VWvortex.com I decided to search for the ’83 Callaway GTI to see what people were saying and sure enough it was on the site. I decided to post a quick question to see if anyone would bite knowing if they are on that forum they will most likely know what they are looking at. Sure enough within a few minutes I had a private message from one of the members stating that they lived approximately an hour away from Millford, WV where the car is located. His name was John and I asked him what I could do in order to get him to look at the car – simple enough, he just wanted to see it himself! He said, cover my fuel cost and I’ll go. We had a deal!

Low and behold I received an answer from the owner after about 48 hours of my questions being written on ebay. Her message stated that she was having technical issues with her computer and didn’t answer any of my questions. Obviously, this scared me to death! I immediately fired another message to her on ebay and asked for her to call me and provided her with my cell number. Sure enough she called me. The owner turned out to be a super sweet older woman that explained to me she never used ebay before. She told me her computer has been giving her problems off and on. We finally got down to business where I could ask the questions I had for her. She nailed every one! She was selling the car because it was her husband’s baby and unfortunately he had recently passed away. She no longer had a need for the vehicle. She then told me that he logged all the miles driven in the vehicle along with keeping any and all paperwork regarding the car. She said it was stored inside every day of its life and it was only used for joy rides. In fact only three people ever drove the car – her husband, her son and her! Her handle for ebay was also a tad scary “junkid1” – my interpretation was “Junk Kid”. However after speaking with her… her name was June Kidd. Another relief!


Lance: At this point I had arranged for John from VWvortex.com to go look at the vehicle. John went there in the morning prior to someone else looking at the vehicle. He told me he’ll text me as soon as he arrives. I was in a long meeting and quickly forgot about the GTI and John. However once the meeting was over about 3 hours later I realized John never texted me. So I started texting him and as I was typing he called me. He told me his cell phone didn’t work at her place, so he was calling from her phone. He told me that with being a stickler in every capacity that this car was a 9.5 out of 10. He also told me it would be easy and fun to make this car a 10 out of 10, stating it only needs some minor updates to really make it perfect. He kept telling me how blown away he was with the incredible overall condition. Needless to say I was excited and couldn’t wait to see the images he took which he assured me he’ll post later when he returned to home. John was awesome in every capacity! His images and his raving review were exactly the information I needed in order to pull the trigger. The only surprise was that the car was stronger than I initially thought per the inspection and images.


GCFSB: Midway through bidding, it was obvious this car was going to be expensive. Were you concerned at all watching your bids get higher?

Lance: I really wanted the car. How often do you run across a low mile, original owner, all documentation & records with a Callaway Turbo stage II installed at Callaway Cars?!? After having John look the car over and send me some great photographs I knew I had to own this incredible car. I’m a total sucker for low mile, original cars that are well documented – I’m just thankful to be the next caretaker of this beautiful little rocket! When John told me this car was near perfect in every capacity I knew I wasn’t going to let this car sell to somebody else. However I knew there would be other people wanting the vehicle just as bad as I did, especially the ones that were able to see it firsthand. My only hope was that there wouldn’t be strong action for the car at the end of the auction. Well, my only hope didn’t come to fruition! There were some serious buyers on this Callaway GTI and I wasn’t about to let it get away. I’ve done this in the past and knew I’d be kicking myself if I didn’t pull the trigger.

I was on the road with my family headed to North Carolina when the bidding was ending. I decided to use esnipe to take care of my bidding on the GTI. I decided to place a ‘crazy’ high bid in on the vehicle of $25,550 to ensure I would be the high bidder unless someone was even more insane that me. You might ask – why $25,500 – simple, because to me that’s what I felt the car was worth in today’s market. Some people out there might say I’m insane, but I challenge you to find me another one like it… original owner, no rust, low miles, Callaway Stage II installed at the Callaway Cars Factory, all documentation, fuel miles logged by the owner since new and the list goes on… Needless to say I’m confident Mark I GTI’s are at their infancy in collectability. I’ll go out on a limb and claim in the next 20 years a GTI of this caliber will fetch in the six figure territory. Although that’s not the reason I purchased this car, it won’t surprise me if it happens. Just read various forums and talk to passionate VW Mark I GTI owners – passion drives the market and so does money. As the generations that really loved these GTI’s get higher paying jobs and etc. they will go back to their childhood favorite cars and they will be willing to pay whatever it takes to get them. I see this over and over again in the line of work I’m involved with today – car events; Carlisle Events. Needless to say I won the car, but it came with a steep price tag in today’s market.

I feel strongly that if you purchase a vehicle it should be one that you are truly going to enjoy, whether it be on the road or simply to look at in your garage. For me, I love the car and will certainly enjoy driving it on various occasions. I’ll also showcase the car so others have the opportunity to see this rare piece of history.


GCFSB: Now that you have the car you’ve wanted, what are the plans for it?

Lance: Enjoy it! I’m one of “those” people that sleep better at night knowing I’ve got another car in my collection that fits well – strange, but I believe “car people” get exactly what I’m talking about… it’s simply a passion and I’m thankful I have it! GCFSB: What else do you have in the garage, if anything?

Lance: I’m a car guy at heart, but Corvettes are typically at the top of my list. All cars that made history due to design, power, race results and so forth really get my blood flowing. With this said, I’ve got the only Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette race car that ran in the World Challenge Series. The 2005 Test and Development Callaway Corvette dubbed the Carlisle Callaway Corvette is another favorite of mine – it was in every Corvette magazine and accomplished a mid 10 second run at over 130 mph back in ’05 along with big brakes, Callaway suspension and etc. Recently a purchase from overseas called the Callaway LM is one of my latest additions, it ran in the 24 Hours of Le Mans three consecutive years and won the SCCA World Challenge S2 Class here in the USA. Another one of my favorites is the ’84 GTI that resembles the one my father used to bang gears in when I was a child (black/blue interior). My all time favorite vehicle is a ’60 Cunningham Corvette that won its class in Le Mans back in 1960 which we took back to Le Mans 50 years later for a reunion along with the original driver John Fitch, check out the Quest Documentary – there was a film written and produced by Michael Brown – http://questdocumentary.com. Another couple vehicles that I “had” to have is the ’06 Ford GT Tungsten and an ’94 Porsche Turbo last of the air cooled turbo’s of that generation. I also have a few other cars with the details I look for in a vehicles as well.

Reeves: Lance, as promised, a short history of the Callaway turbo GTI.

Remember that Callaway turbo systems was the company started in the back of my house in old Lyme Connecticut around 1977.

It was a point to choose only cars that could stand a substantial increase in power and still remain reliable. This pretty much defined the small German cars: BMW Porsche Mercedes and VW

The VW rabbit series and the subsequent GTI series, had a good enthusiast following in the sport hatchback segment. They became a good candidate for some substantial horsepower increasing.

We had good success in turbo charging the BMW 3,5, 6 and 7 series. So we decided to translate some of that philosophy to the VW productline.

The idea was to sell a very complete kit so that the advanced do-it-yourselfer in his garage had everything that he needed to wind up to turbocharging the VW reliably, quickly, and with a great feeling of more power.


Reeves: We manufactured all of the components, the exhaust manifold, the tubing, the intercooling, the exhaust system, and the fuel enrichment system, and placed them all in boxes on Friday afternoon and UPS would come and pick up the entire weeks production. We shipped them all COD direct to the owners. There were five of us working out of the house, and those were the days. Beany had just been born. Pete was on the way. the shop was in the middle of being expanded and the reputation in the marketplace was good. the money was rolling in, no accounts payable and no accounts receivable.

There were 2 hp levels: stage one I believe was about 120 hp & stage two was 175 hp. The stage two cars with front-wheel-drive and the tires of the day, were a quite amusing torque steer proposition.

Very glad that you have what appears to be a good example of the vintage. Thanks for your continued enthusiasm. I’m sure dad is proud.

All three of today’s cars represented the peak of their respective brands when they were new and all three have achieved cult followings and collector status. Yet all three do their jobs in very different ways. We’ve got a last of the breed 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC, a beginning of the run European-model Porsche 928 5 speed, and a middle of the run E28 switch-over 1983 BMW 633 CSi. Which would be your Coupe du Jour? Let’s start with the Mercedes-Benz:

Great Looking Vehicle!
Last of the lifetime W126 Models, last seven off the assembly line in absolute museum quality. This car has always been garaged kept. This car certainly looks pretty clean in the photos, and miles are right about where you’d want them. Price seems to be really great for the condition and claimed “museum quality” status. While that may be an exaggeration, the car does appear well kept. In out last executive sedan shootout, the Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL was pretty soundly defeated by the newer Audi S8 and BMW 740i; but in this case, the 560 is the newest of the three and in the best condition. I love the pillar-less design of these coupes, black is an appropriate color (though probably not what I would have chosen) and aside from the radio, it appears all original. It sure looks like a lot of car for your coin – but will this “German Corvette” sway your decision?

The early 928s, like the early 6 series, are the cleanest of the designs, especially in Euro-trim. While they’re not the most aggressive looking, it’s amazing how fresh the design still looks now 35 years later. This particular model is one of the better ones to look at for enthusiasts, with a 5 speed, red exterior and that crazy psychedelic interior:

Almost 40 yrs old and only 38,000 orig miles on this beautiful 1978 Porsche Euro Edition! This was the 1st year for the 928 and this low serial no. car is sure to increase in value! 5-speed manual shift, 4.5 V8 engine, top speed of 150 mph the euro edition had more HP then the standard 928.

While it sounds like it needs a mechanical freshening, the condition this car is presented in is impressive and the miles look believable. If you want an early 928 that would be collector status, I think this one fits the bill perfectly. The 5 speed coupled with the European motor gave a lot more motivation than the U.S. market saw until the end of the run. Yes, it has needs, but I feel the price appropriately reflects those needs and this one surely is the looker of the group. But if Porsche repair bills are a little too scary for you to contemplate, how about this BMW?

The 6 series is on an upward tick in value, following the steadily appreciating E30 and newly rising E28 models. While I think the early Euro-cars are the best looking of the run, without a doubt the best drivers are the later E28-derived models such as this one. White over blue probably wouldn’t be everyone’s first choice, but this car is presented as an all-original 1 owner car:

These cars are the European muscle cars of the 80’s only way more smooth and solid. The original Alpine White paint is in excellent original condition with only a few minor dings. No rust or peeling of any kind. All trim in good shape. Factory matched basket wheels are in great shape. Factory under coating intact and no issues under the car. Power sunroof works great. Power windows go up and down. Cabin heats well and blower fans work. Dash has a few cracks from the California sun and has a dash mat in place. Door panels are excellent as well as carpet.

Here is what I feel still needs to be serviced at some point in the near future.

So unlike the 928, lots of service to get it back running, but also some time needed to finish sorting the details. For me, the mid-range 6s in the 1980s are the least appealing of the run, but they’re nice drivers, pretty reliable and long lived, and certainly will appreciate if maintained over the coming years. Though this car looks rough in the photos, I think with some time and attention the exterior would really sharpen up quite a bit, though the interior also needs attention. As with the 928, the price in part reflects the need for work, though while I think the 928 price is more or less spot-on, I think this price may be a little high still considering the work needed, overall condition and miles on the car.

Were it my money, it’s down to the Mercedes and Porsche. The 560 looks pretty immaculate, especially considering the price. The logical side of me says “STAY AWAY” from the 928, but I love the color combination, the interior, the manual transmission, and European build. Those details would just be too much for me to overcome and enough to push the better Angel off my shoulder.

Which would you choose?


Afternoon Accessories: Volkswagen Corrado E-code Euro Headlights

Even though the Corrado’s headlights in U.S. form were not nearly as bad as the 1980s Volkswagen/Audi products, swapping in European market headlights is still a popular option for both looks and light output. Today there is a nice looking set of Hella European lights on Ebay:

Original VW ECodes European Corrado VR6 Headlights. All tabs intact. You will need top level adjusters. These are fully functional with great reflectors and glass.

I have one electric adjuster available in my other auctions. I also have an awesome OSRAM HID H4 conversion kit available which eliminates the need for a harness and connects to you norm H4 harness. Plug n Play with hi/lo setting.

The description notes that you’ll have to get either the harness or the conversion kit, so factor that into your purchase as well. Corrado Euro lights are a bit more rare than some other models which in part explains the higher price. If you want this look though, you’re probably willing to pay for the right parts.
