1983 Audi Quattro

Plenty has been said on this page and others about the now legendary status of the original Quattro, so if you’re looking for a history lesson it won’t be here. However, what the quattro does represent is great collector value in comparison to contemporary 911s and slightly later E30 M3s; a unique car with plenty of character that took the automotive world on a different path. Quattro values have been steadily increasing over the past several years, and while they are hard to find on these shores in good condition for sale they do come up from time to time. The last 1983 Quattro we featured had lost some of its originality in favor of driveability; today’s car retains some of that originality and shows well in Tornado Red:

Afternoon Accessories: Audi C4 S4/S6 Winter Wheel Speedline Options

Like yesterday afternoon’s B5 optional factory Speedline wheels, today’s Speedlines were also optional with all-seasons on the Audi C4 S4 and S6. They weren’t often selected as an option over the high-performance 16″ wheels that came standard, and unlike yesterday’s wheels these measured in at at full width – prior to 1992, the largest wheel Audi optioned any of their sedans with were the 15 x 7.5 BBSs, and these Speedlines were the same width though slightly higher offset. Take a look at some rare to see Speedlines:

1949 Porsche “Frankfurt Flyer” Custom

In the world of home-brewed specials, there are plenty that scream “Run for the hills!” and even more that just look so flat they’re forgettable. Many of these are Volkswagen-derived specials, and while most of them try to copy more expensive cars there are precious few that achieve it. However, a few months back one started to circulate the halls of the Interweb; the Glockler-inspired handbuilt “Frankfurt Flyer”. Based on modest Volkswagen internals, the custom hand-hammered aluminum body managed to evoke images of unaffordable Porsches and even the Auto-Union high-speed record racers that the Porsche father and son team worked on. It was simply amazing to see this car take shape and how like some of the factory cars it appears. The fabricator has decided to continue to produce these gems, and has an unbuilt chassis ready to assemble of Ebay:

Afternoon Accessories: Audi B5 S4 Winter Option Speedline 16×6 Wheels

I’m not really sure entirely why, but I’ve got a thing for rare wheels, especially when they’re wheels you don’t often see. Such is the case with today’s accessory – ultra rare in the United States factory option winter wheels for the B5 S4. Specially offset to clear the brakes yet narrow to support thin snows, these Speedlines are some of the prettiest factory winter wheels ever made in my mind. They’re elegant and while they’re narrow and small compared to what most people want, in my mind there is something immeasurably cool about wide fender cars sitting on narrow snow tires.

2006 Audi S4 25th Anniversary Quattro

During our recent “4WD Week” I wrote up a 2007 S4 DTM edition, a car that while attractive I felt was pretty overpriced. In fact, I said that even though it was a limited edition I didn’t think it was nearly as desirable as the 2006 run of 250 25th Anniversary of Quattro S4s. These S4s were really like a diet RS4, gaining suspension upgrades, revised exterior pieces and some special interior treatments, and importantly a revised rear sport differential that really transformed the car’s handling. Additionally, the limited S4s got the best looking wheels of the bunch, special Ronals that appeared on both the Ultrasport Titanium package for the A4 and on this car in normal silver. More than just a limited edition sticker and special color (I’m looking at you, Lime Rock Park edition M3), this car was a culmination of lots of little changes that made for a bridge model between the normal S4 and the RS4:
