Along with the E39 BMW M5, the E38 740i is one of those über sedans that is on my radar for future purchase. Every time I return home to Philadelphia, I see a number of E38s, mostly in black, cruising up and down Bustleton Avenue through the Northeast section of the city, a predominately Russian neighborhood. Popular, then, both at home in Russia and abroad. It is still commonplace to see the E38 function as the vehicle of choice for heads of state, executives and wealthy individuals the world over. This particular 740i in upstate New York has the popular M parallel wheels and only 68,000 miles under it’s wings.

The asking price for this 740i is about in line with where current values on these models are headed. The color combination and mileage on this particular car are surely going to garner its fair share of interest. I can’t help but get weak in the knees every time I see one of these sedans. The crisp lines and stance, especially with the M parallel wheels, is just perfect. This, in my opinion, was the zenith of the 7 series. You can have the bloated and overly complex current range. I’ll take an E38, thank you.
The Buy It Now price of $12,995 seems about right. A co-worker of mine got $11,000 in trade on a 2001 740i non-sport package with 68k a few months ago. It was not in as good shape as this car. The dealer which purchased the car put it on the lot for $11,995.

So, a potential buyer would be paying now about what it will be worth in the future? (Actually, I don’t think the BIN price is unreasonable for this mileage, and the reserve is probably a bit lower.)
I share your appreciation for the E38 740 Sport – particularly in this striking black color combo. Classic and beautiful.
As we’ve heard (and some of us know from first-hand experience), there are few cars quite as expensive as a 8-10 year old German flagship luxury sedan. The accident history and rust belt history probably don’t help either.
But it sure is attractive…
I don’t think this is a genuine Sport package, the seats, steering wheel and chrome trim suggests it just has the M parallels fitted to a regular car.
NOT a Sport model. The eBay ad does not claim it to be either…just a regular 740i and as such overpriced by about $8k.
@Larry, I could be wrong, but I haven’t seen E38 values move much over the last year or two. I’d wager a guess and think they’d probably stay static or creep up a little bit over the next year or two. In time, these may become more valuable, but given what we’ve seen with other large German sedans, I kind of doubt it.
@Tony and Larry, I know the 740i had different wood than the 740i sport, and since it’s hard to tell whether this has the higher stall torque converter, going on the non black window trim (something I didn’t pick up on) would tip this off as a non sport version. Amazing how wheels make a difference in how a car appears.
