1985 BMW 745i Turbo

6a81a05b29_1024

German cars are know as being exact in their engineering, and even the model designation of the turbocharged E23 7 series takes this mantra to heart. This particular 745i does not, in fact, have a 4.5 liter inline-6 as suggested by the badge on the trunk. Rather, it designates that the turbocharged powerplant under the hood has 1.4 times the power output of the normally aspirated unit it is based on. These E23 7 series sedans had the same aggressive front snout as the beloved E24 6 series and moved the BMW game forward in terms of technology, with service interval indicators, anti-lock brakes and climate control systems appearing during the production run. The 745i Turbo was offered in North America between 1979 and 1986, first with a 3.2 liter inline six and then upgraded to the 3.4 unit that we see here. This example for sale in Georgia is a Euro market model that has the optional water buffalo leather, lending quite a unique air to the interior.

1986 BMW 635 CSi

When my father started his foray into German cars, I was a young teenager. The first car he bought was a 1982 BMW 633CSi; to my eyes, still a beautiful car. Shortly after that he bought a companion 1985 635CSi automatic; and even though that car wasn’t quite as pretty as the earlier shark and was an automatic, it was much more fun to drive. It wasn’t because of the displacement increase in the motor, but rather the changeover to E28 mechanicals that really transformed the E24 from what was a stunning looker into a real driver’s car. These later 6s usually carry a bit of a premium over the early models, though truth be told the E24 market is really in a state of fluctuation where you can buy great looking cars for a steal or see very overpriced examples that need work. Currently falling into the former category is today’s black over cream 1986 model, sporting lower miles and the all-important 5-speed manual:

Party Like It’s 1989 Week: ’89 BMW Z1

What was the first BMW Z car? Ask any American on the street and they’ll probably tell you the Z3, otherwise known as the car from the James Bond flick, Goldeneye. That answer would be incorrect. The first Z was the Z1, built between 1989 and 1991 with 8,000 copies produced. Noted mainly for its doors that retracted into the side of the vehicle, this roadster was based on E30 3 series mechanicals and featured new technology that would trickle down into the rest of the BMW range. The Z axle rear suspension would go on to be used in the E36 3 series and high intensity discharge lights would appear on many future BMW models. Curiously, no Z1 came fitted with air conditioning, as there was limited room in the interior for both heating elements and the cooling unit. This particular Z1 is for sale in just north of Hamburg, Germany.

Motorsport Sunday: 1972 BMW 2002 Ti Touring

As Paul noted nearly a year ago with his post on a 2002 Touring, they’re quite rare to see in the United States with very few imported and kept running. However, while perusing Ebay.de looking for cars for our “Party Like It’s 1989 Week”, I came across a very cool 2002 Touring that has been given the Turbo look and is ready for completion. With a host of upgrades and fresher bodywork and paint, this may be a worthwhile project for the right person to import even if it’s been legal to do so for nearly two decades! There isn’t much time to jump on this auction but it was simply too cool to pass up!

2001 BMW 325xi Touring

The same neighbor that I’ve written about pampering a sweet, sweet 1996 911 Turbo daily drives an E46 Touring that I covet. Even as just a plain 325i, it is simply attractive and seems to be a great mix of entertaining and useful. While his rare drives in the 911 must be a revelation, the ability to have fun every day in a great wagon must be nice. Thought automatic, today’s 325xi adds all-wheel drive to create even more versatility. With just 54k miles, this could make a great DD for years to come.
