Mercedes-Benz has never been one to adopt fads quickly, unless you count recent years. Which makes the Heckflosse, or fintail models of the late 1950s and early 1960s rather interesting, as fins on American cars were dying out. Yet Mercedes seemed determined to include them in their new offerings at the time. By the end of the 1960s, this styling feature was all but gone. This 1967 Mercedes-Benz 200D represents the end of the run for the fintail. The Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG carried on the tradition of jamming a big engine into a modest package to produce big time performance. The more I delve into AMG history, however, I am intrigued by the C43’s predecessor, the C36 AMG. This was AMG’s first in-house collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. While it may be down on horsepower, it’s a rarer find than the V8 variants that succeeded it. We featured a final year C36 AMG earlier this month, but here is a low mileage black example for sale in Wisconsin.

The Mercedes-Benz W123 is one of those few cars that blends luxury and practicality in one stoic package. If a W123 could play a round of poker, you probably would have a hard time getting a read on it. These are cars that go the distance with little complaint. While many have been run for hundreds of thousands of miles, some looking worse for wear than others, this 1979 300TD for sale in New Jersey is a remarkable survivor.

Over the last couple weeks a bunch of Mercedes-Benz 560SELs with low mileage cropped up, prompting us to feature a few of them. There’s no doubt that these were one of the most loved S class generations of all time. Advanced for their time, they also offered plenty of classic Mercedes style and durability to go along with the package. While I am a big fan of the flagship Benz of the period, I’ve maintained that my choice would be a short wheelbase 300SE, with the 3.0 liter inline six. It won’t win any races, but it’s a smooth engine and with less length, a more manageable drive around town.
