Motorsports Monday: 1986 Porsche 930

It’s hard to fathom any Porsche 930 as “reasonably priced” these days, but after the $500,000 SLS AMG GT3 from earlier this 1986 Porsche 930 seems positively a cheap way to consider track time. What interests me about this car is something the seller mentions in the listing; this is an original Turbo, and still retains the original motor casing and transmission to prove it. Rob’s recent modified 1984 911 “Turbo” model and Nate’s odd M30 turbo M5 from yesterday prove that turbocharged motors popping up in unexpected packages isn’t particularly uncommon, but original 930s rarely turn up in race car form:

1973 Porsche 911T Coupe Sportomatic

I have a couple reasons for wanting to feature this 911: 1) the exterior color is Gemini Blue Metallic, one of the better early blues that Porsche offered and definitely one of my favorites. 2) It’s a Sportomatic, the quirky clutch-less manual-automatic transmission Porsche experimented with in the early years of the 911. A Sportomatic is pretty rare to come across, though this is one of the times where rarity doesn’t always mean increased desirability. Still, for those with an interest in Porsche’s engineering history, either as part of a collection or simply for one’s own curiosity, this one comes from about as late in long-hood design as we can find and should make for a nice example. It is equipped with the MFI 2.4 liter flat-six that was standard in the 911E and 911S – though with less power – but only available in the first half of ’73 for the 911T. That it comes in such a wonderful color makes it just that much more appealing. So here we have a Gemini Blue Metallic 1973 Porsche 911T Coupe, located in Oregon, with 109,802 miles on it and the 4-speed Sportomatic transmission.

1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

It’s funny, even within the world of high performance (like the Carrera RS featured Wednesday) and extremely interesting 911s (like the Amethyst 964 featured on Tuesday) I still can come across examples of a relatively basic 3.2 Carrera and really be captivated by it. Such is the case with this paint-to-sample Sapphire Blue 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Nashville. I came across it and immediately was taken in by it. There isn’t anything particularly awe inspiring about this Carrera; it’s just a nice looking example in what appears to be good condition and the price isn’t too bad. While color itself always is a matter of taste I think for those who do enjoy it the total package here is just the sort of thing many of us are trying to find.

Porsche Exclusive: 2016 Porsche Macan S

My disdain for the common SUV is well documented here on GCFSB, but a funny thing happened in 2014. Porsche released the Macan. At first glance, I wrote this car off as a smaller Cayenne. And yes, I’ll call this a car because anyone who has seen one in real life knows about its compact dimensions. My attraction to the Macan has grown over time to the point that I would be tempted to pull the trigger if a 6-speed manual were available. I’m not writing off the perfectly fine 7-speed PDK transmission, but three pedals is really how I’d prefer my car to be configured, especially if I’m going to drop down this much coin. Nevertheless, after a discussion with my father, the Macan is a serious contender to replace my mother’s trusty 17 year old C-class. So maybe a Porsche will finally wind up in the family somewhere after all. 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera RS

Here is something we definitely don’t see everyday. From the outset I’ll say that there are a lot of questions to be asked about this 911, but once those questions are answered then this one probably won’t be around long. Here we have a 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera RS, located in Texas, with 17,893 miles on it. Since the 993 Carrera RS was never imported into the United States and because we have not yet reached the 25 year window in which such a car can more easily be imported, I’m always curious how the rare few of these that do exist here manage to find their way to our shores. There are always ways to get around such obstacles and this isn’t the first one I’ve come across, but in each case there lingers that same aura of mystery. Those concerns cover our first set of questions, and frankly those are probably the most important as they help establish the authenticity of this 911 and its road legality. I should state, this does appear to be a genuine RS so I don’t want to heap doubt upon it in that regard, but at this sort of price caution is always warranted.
