While it would likely be too much to say that the Porsche 930 created the 911’s image as a high performance car that required an equally high degree of skill, there’s little doubt that the 930 helped cement that legacy and propel the model forward. These cars were intended to raise the bar for Porsche performance into supercar territory and for the most part it was a success. Beginning with the 1978 model year, Porsche increased displacement from 3.0 liters to 3.3 liters and added an intercooler in order to bring power up to 300 hp. With the addition of the larger whale tail on the Turbo the car’s looks were aggressive enough to suit its performance. The car featured here is an excellent looking 1978 Porsche 930 that comes in the rare combination of a Bamboo Beige exterior over a Cork leather interior. While it has just under 55,000 miles it’s seen a fully rebuilt engine along with the refreshing of most other components.

The eighties were a time of experimentation in outrageousness when it came to automotive styling. From the flared gills of the Ferrari Testarossa to wide fendered hot rods from the Mercedes-Benz tuning firm, AMG, the sky was the limit. There was one styling modification that I was never too particularly fond of, and it came by way of the number 505, otherwise known as the factory option code for Flachbau (slantnose). This option eviscerated the classic front end profile of the 911 for a decidedly eighties appearance by way of a wedge shape front end with pop-up headlamps. Who ever would go to the lengths of modifying a classic design like the 911 was beyond me. But, only a limited run of these were manufactured, much to the joy of purists everywhere. Perhaps this spoke to how popular this option was amongst 911 buyers? Whatever the case may be, this Slantnose Cabriolet for sale in New Jersey is but a handful that were produced in the 3.2 Carrera’s final year.

3 CommentsNo matter how much I read about Porsche 911s, there’s always some little historical tidbits that I come across of which I wasn’t aware. Case in point this 1968 Targa with an optional 100 liter fuel tank. It seems the option lists from the folks in Stuttgart know no bounds, as this one has a few other interesting features, such as the Webasto heater and Recaro sport seats.

Comments closedIn the world of home-brewed specials, there are plenty that scream “Run for the hills!” and even more that just look so flat they’re forgettable. Many of these are Volkswagen-derived specials, and while most of them try to copy more expensive cars there are precious few that achieve it. However, a few months back one started to circulate the halls of the Interweb; the Glockler-inspired handbuilt “Frankfurt Flyer”. Based on modest Volkswagen internals, the custom hand-hammered aluminum body managed to evoke images of unaffordable Porsches and even the Auto-Union high-speed record racers that the Porsche father and son team worked on. It was simply amazing to see this car take shape and how like some of the factory cars it appears. The fabricator has decided to continue to produce these gems, and has an unbuilt chassis ready to assemble of Ebay:

2 CommentsMany people around the world today are celebrating Boxing Day, a day that has been described as a sort of second Christmas. Traditionally this is the date when laborers would receive gifts and offerings from their employers in exchange for their service, but it has evolved into a Black Friday, with retailers passing on post-Christmas specials to consumers. This Boxing Day, why not celebrate with a sports car that has the heart of a boxer? The Porsche 993. This final year 993 Targa for sale in Texas is wearing the iconic Arena Red from the era and has covered a scant 36,000 miles since new.
