I struggled with the 964 scavenger hunt to be honest, but this in turn taught me an invaluable lesson on the challenge of finding that just right Porsche. Perhaps owing to its longevity and continuous shape, the 911 is pretty much the ubiquitous sports car, and even for the relatively-educated model years and changes can blend together. I love Porsches, but being more of a BMW/VW guy, I’ll bashfully admit that sometimes I’ve lumped them together as “another 911.”
Late-model, black on black RWD 964s are apparently not just “another 911.” So this became an exciting scavenger hunt for me. The closest example I could find was a Turbo, which probably puts it in the “too much money” category, but it’s still worth a good look because this is a beautiful car. Low-mileage and pure early-90s Zuffenhausen sex, this is one of the best of the breed.
If Evan’s Lightweight 3.3 Turbo can go for ~$64k American, $48,800 for this immaculate 911 Turbo seems fairly reasonable. The interior is impeccable and the exterior looks flawless, a black-on-black beauty. It’s no bargain, but it’s not just another 911 either.
Looking for a different, yet practical, daily driver? One that will get you a few looks at the local weekend car show, but also return respectable MPG? One that you can register as a classic car, but still take down to the home improvement store for a load of supplies? Top it all off with extremely low mileage. This may be your car.
This well looked after Opel station wagon has covered a mere 34,000 miles. It has hardly been broken in. The seller states that the car was put into storage after the first owner died. Once it was resurrected the next owner kept a notebook detailing every time the car was driven.
The car is all original with only minor wear. Opel kept things pretty standard for all their cars so Asconas came fitted with the popular 1.9 liter inline 4, which sends 90 horsepower through the optional automatic transmission. That may not seem like much, but the car doesn’t weigh much over 2000lbs. You sometimes see these called the Opel 1900.
This quite a great, clean, example and there is something cool about two door wagons. The pie plate hub caps, roof rack and chrome back fog lights add to the charm. The long time GM-Opel partnership showed it was a great way to get these smaller cars into the U.S. compared to the giant yachts that were being built here. It is up to the new owner to decide which bumper sticker to remove first, the Mcain-Palin one or the St. Louis Cardinals one.
This could be a much easier purchase to justify than say a far less practical two seat sports car. Buy-it-Now is $8750.
I’m kicking off another theme week for us here at GCFSB. Look out for a week of budget buys. We are going to keep all these finds to under $10,000 so you won’t have to break the sparschwein.
These could be just the thing to get you ready as summer nears. Some of these finds may need minor work, think family bonding while you work on them over the summer. Others may just need a new enthusiastic owner. We’ll keep these to real runners, daily drivers, and show and shine weekend cruisers. We will try to let sleeping dogs lay and find you real honest to goodness affordable deals, no problem children.
Sure we like the high end, the pristine, the uber rare, but there are plenty of fine, enjoyable, cars out there that don’t take a second mortgage to buy and a third to cover maintenance upkeep for the two weekends a year you dare drive the exotic.
So, what the heck your 401k is probably tanked so why not invest in some tangible assets that you can have fun with.

If you are a Benz fan and want the highest form of expression of the G55 you actually have a pair of options.
You could go with the killer 600 horsepower Hamann Typhoon with 6 sidepipe exhaust:
or the even more crazy 700 horsepower, 800+ lb ft torque Brabus G V12 S Biturbo. Can you imagine a heavy truck with shape and weight of a small house that can hit 60 MPH in 4.3 seconds? The price tag is near $400,000.
Not to leave you BMW folks out, here is one of my favorite clips of Hans Joachim Stuck motoring an X5 LeMans arround a track. The car features the same V12 engine from the BMW LMR racer. Just listen to the engine howl on that thing. 700+ horsepower and it was faster around Nurburgring, 7:49, then a Gallardo a Ferrari 360 and even the M3 CSL. Not exactly what the typical American SUV buyer has in mind.
Since our first theme week was such a success and fun. We are doing another round. This week we are thinking about the Winter Olympics. Heavy snow, cold temperatures, rugged terrain, all things you would associate with the Winter Olympics. Lastly, of course, you have your highly tuned, trained, athletes at the top of their game, ready to tackle tough conditions.
We think that this can be a pretty easy comparison to the top dogs (St. Bernards perhaps?) of the luxury, performance SUV, category.
So be on the lookout this week for Teutonic trucks.

This week we’re taking a moment to begin introducing theme weeks to the blog, and to get us started we’re featuring the fabulous e39 M5. These cars represent amazing value and have a proud place in the M5 lineage. We’ll include more information on the special features of this car as the week progresses.

Another 03 in Carbon Black, but this one has the extended black leather package. Similar miles at 43k, reported all dealer service with records, and no mods except Dinan software and iPod controller. This lovely example is in Seattle on Autotrader for $29k.
Well I hope one of these work because after posting them all up, I’m more than a little worked up for e39 Theme Week. I mean even the most expensive one of the bunch is half of the original sticker price and these have all the bugs worked out and are ready to run.
