The Audi RS4 is quickly becoming the performance bargain the German cars; with revised and less understeer-prone all-wheel drive, a 6-speed manual and that unbelievable sounding V8 in a practical 4-door sedan, it’s easy to see why the RS4 would be popular. But it’s also an expensive car to maintain, and residual values from the first and second crop of owners has dropped down towards the point where third-tier owners are getting into them. The problem is that if you’re thinking about buying one of these long term, you may be better suited buying one before the typical scenario occurs with these cars – prices drop, people that can’t afford to maintain them well buy them, and when you finally get one it’s an uphill battle to try to keep it going. Today I have two examples of the venerable RS4, and the question is would you choose the popular color over one with lower miles? We’ll start with the popular color – Sprint Blue in this case:

I really fear buying one of these complicated Audis from a second-hand dealer, mostly because it’s hard to track down what actually has happened to the car. No real mention of maintenance is made, and there are some warning signs – miles aren’t exceptionally high, but only 7 years into its life this Audi has already had 4 owners. Additionally, here’s another example of a big-money car (at least, to me!) missing a $25 centercap. If you’re going to make a big deal out of the “upgraded” black BBS CH wheels, you should at least make sure you replace that cap. At very least, you could pop one out and switch sides so it appears in the photos to be correct. As much of a BBS fan as I am, I guess I just wouldn’t really consider those CHs an upgrade from the original RS4 wheels, either. The lack of attention to detail may not be reason alone to not purchase, but I’d certainly want to do a complete PPI prior to purchasing this example, even if Sprint Blue is the color I’d want. So, what if the miles were lower?
Misano Red is a pretty color in and of itself, but for some reason for me it doesn’t suit the RS4 particularly well. My wife says that it’s because the RS badges get washed out on the reds, and perhaps she’s right. But, at least it’s not black or silver as many seem to be, and the miles on this example are only half what the Sprint Blue example has traveled. Is it worth an extra $2,000 then?

Who trades an RS4 in on a Ford? I’m thinking positive thoughts, and perhaps the owner opted into a 700hp Mustang Cobra Jet or whatever they’re calling them these days. There’s basically no description on this car as well – and as with the previous example, I’d prefer a thorough PPI prior to purchasing a car of this caliber. But on the merit of miles alone, between these two examples I’d probably be more interested in this one. I like having the original wheels – one of the better looking Audi wheels fitted from the factory, and overall condition on this car looks great. Which would you choose?

just from the ad I’d run far away from this dealer…LOL
can’t get the color right….these are aftermarket BBS wheels…I want to say CH’s but I have CH’s on my E92 M3 and these look different…..
I like the RS4 better than the RS6 because it is a 6 speed….and an N/A motor…though a wee bit tight in the rear for 4 adults…but you are spot on with these…and quite frankly for any other German high performance cars….as the prices drop on that initial hit…people who really can;t afford to maintain them properly get their hands on them and ruin them for the next guy….
yes it is worth an extra 2k…..the mileage is a HUGE factor here….1/2 the miles….
Black wheels are going to go down in the annals as being the co-opted trend of 2014 — co-opted by every trashed ’95 Accord on craigslist. The black interior is not a pleasing contrast to the blue, in my opinion. It’s too severe and visually just doesn’t make sense.
