Low-mileage 1985 BMW M635CSi Euro for sale – REVISIT

The start of what would be the M6 legend, BMW Motorsport introduced M635CSi at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1983. It was basically an E24 with the282bhp M88 engine from M1. With 0-60 numbers in the low 6 second arena, the M635CSi was one of the top performers of its day.  All M6 cars came with a limited slip rear differential, larger 15″ wheels and tires and an upgraded suspension. This Polaris Silver M635CSi was featured last month and is certainly more potent than the Stateside M6.

1985 BMW M635CSi on eBay

Here I have an ’85 BMW Euro M635CSi in Polaris Silver with 76k miles on it, possibly a very rare color for the M635’s. I have 2 sets of BBS 3 Piece wheels for it. Presently there are 17 x 8.5 polished and powder-coated with near new Bridgestone Potenza RE-01 255/40-17 tires, awesome set-up, looks and handling are “Killer.” Also, I have been refurbishing the Original 16 x 8 3 piece BBS wheels that came with the car from BMW, silver Powder-coated centers with clear power-coating lips, qty 5, gorgeous, just need to seal the wheels together and torque the new bolts. I run Kendall mineral based engine oil and 92 octaine fuel. I also have a Frank Fahey Track Pipe to run without catalytic converters, mix 30% Av Gas with this set-up, again, awesome. Frank recently did the valve adjustments for me. This car has stainless steel exhaust system, exhaust note sounds magnificent, especially with the straight pipes and a touch of avgas. I also have a resonnater. I keep this car in the garage at all times to keep out of the sun and elements.

This car is a true time capsule, it is obvious that the owner has taken meticulous care of this car. The OEM plus upgrades combined with the clean original paint and scant 76K original miles make this a perfect weekend toy that can be driven to shows, and driven home with a trophy. Placing a value on a euro import is harder than most, as it is difficult to put a value on the fact that the car is even in this country.

With the market for US M6 cars strong with top examples commanding upwards of $30,000, the argument could be made that this car should fall at that price point, as it’s true Euro Spec with the actual M88, and not the detuned S38 powerplant. The flip side of that is that badge snobs will argue that this is not an M6, and therefore should not commant M6 money. Whatever side of the fence you’re on, the $23,000 asking price for this car is a touch on the high side. Considering its condition, and all of the spare parts you get, I’d say this car should be in the area of $18,000 to $19,000.

The below post originally appeared on our site October 11, 2012:

As soon as I saw this 635CSi, I thought of Evan’s post last year on a highly-modified 635. Whereas that silver shark accomplished its clean look via body kits and shaving, today’s was born this way thanks to the prudent factory Euro bumpers. A few individualized choices keep it from being completely stock, but the Euro originality and 76k original miles are what really set this M635CSi apart from the crowd.

Life changing event, I have to sell…and, I deeply regret. This is an awesome M635csi.

This is indeed an awesome M635CSi. But what’s the upper limit for these cars? I’d think the $27,500 Buy-It-Now might be closing in on that limit, and this is not a perfect E24. Sure, 76k miles is a nice amount, but it’s not a sub-50k mile creampuff. The Euroness (M88, anyone? yes please) adds value, but I think the opening bid of $16,500 is closer to a good price here rather than starting point. Throw in some for the extra wheels, I still think over $20k seems a bit optimistic. Price aside, the seller has done a very nice job with this M635CSi and I hope he and the buyer leave happy.

I’m a big fan of this in silver with those rims. Really clean look.

Back in the ’80s, a local doctor custom imported one of these in a Baltic Blue with beige combination. What a great car! I’ve always wanted one, but there’s a lot of great alternatives available at the seller’s asking price. I don’t think I could talk myself into spending that much on this car.

Amazing how the line “a/c needs a recharge” can sour an otherwise nice presentation. Does that ever turn out to be true? The car is cool enough to stand on its own merits without that statement.

As you noted, Scott, “this car will need to have the air-conditioning recharged” means either the seller is clueless, or he thinks we are. Either way, not a great way to convey credibility.

Perhaps it’s worth $27,500 in the seller’s mind, but in the real world, good friggin luck. Sure, it’s a gorgeous low-mileage M635CSi, and he’s kept it well maintained and has plenty of extra parts to go with it, but nearly 30 large? Seriously?!? Again, either the seller is clueless, or he thinks we are.

In addition, it seems like the seller’s been experimenting with some interesting set-ups, which leads me to wonder about how the car is being driven and whether it would pass emissions inspection. Some vehicle history would be nice too. If the price were somewhere in this galaxy, maybe it would be worth learning more, but right now, don’t bother.

Listings like this are incredibly annoying – what looks like the perfect E24 I’ve always wanted, I get excited, but then find out (once again) that it’s just an unrealistic tease. Pisses me off.

The quality of this car has always been slightly over looked, not to mention its performance capabilities. They will all be higher in price down the road and a must car now in that shape.

I’m not sure exactly what this means from Brian’s write-up:

“The flip side of that is that badge snobs will argue that this is not an M6, and therefore should not commant M6 money.”

Is there anyone who thinks a Euro M635CSi is less desirable than a US-spec M6? I can’t believe there is. It’s the M6 that’s not “real”!

In any event – we all agree that there is too much wrong to be worth the asking. What’s up with those rear side-markers? And shouldn’t a Polaris car have the factory stripes? It looks naked without them. “Crazing paint”.

    Too many questions! 16k tops.

    “16k tops.”

Yes, i’ve seen many for that price. I its just Euro is an excuse for people to spend double.
