Early in my track career, I became an instructor with the BMW Car Club. This afforded me many interesting experiences, one of which also happens to be one of my favorite track memories. One trip to Lime Rock Park was on a rainy Saturday; arriving, I found that one of my students had a Porsche 968. The car was well modified, running on sticky Michelin Pilot Sports and replete with a fully upgraded suspension, the 968 looked purposeful in Guards Red with BBS wheels and a 6-speed manual. Now, on paper the 968 was disappointing compared to the earlier Turbo models. Several times I’ve backed up this view because modified Turbos offer so much track performance. I’ve also spent some time in 944 Turbos around the same track – notably, my father’s ’89 Turbo, so I’m not without a point of reference. But this rainy day my student’s 968 was a blazing chariot against the bleak fog of the morning. Usually I get together and talk with my students before we head out about what their experience, expectations and trouble spots are. And this day, my student approached me and immediately said “I’m not heading out”. I figured this was because of the rain; in inclement conditions, the risk of an incident increases considerably, but so does the learning curve. It wasn’t fear of the conditions that was holding him back though; he had taken some medication and prudently didn’t feel as though his mental state was conducive to track time. “But you could drive me around” he said….

Not particularly reluctantly, I agreed. In the rain, my Audi Coupe GT had showed its strength and I was at a point where I actually enjoyed heading out in the rain more than the dry at BMW events because horsepower was rendered irrelevant. But the 968, in addition to being rear drive instead of front, had nearly double the horsepower of my GT and was considerably harder thanks to the dry-setup suspension upgrades. Plus, the Michelins looked dangerously devoid of water channels. Yet out we went, and soon we were lapping M3s and other Porsches. The balance of the 968 was just incredible. There was one particular instant which still stands out in my memory, and even writing this now the hairs on the back of my neck stand at attention. On the back straight (avid readers will remember this named, curved section as “No Name Straight”) at full throttle, the 968 twitched left and right slightly as we rocketed down the road. It required only the slightest correction of the wheel as the tires encountered water, a delicate adjustment of the front end as the rears lit up slightly at 75 m.p.h.. But the car held its line, assisted by near perfect weight distribution and the limited-slip differential. I’d like to say that the driving also helped, but I think the reality was that it was the engineering behind the car that allowed that car to remain heading down the track in the right direction at what were likely inadvisable speeds considering the conditions. But there are far fewer 968s than 944 Turbos race ready, so when I came across this prepped 968 Club Sport, the memory of that day instantly popped back into my mind. At $23,000 plus importation fees, let’s be frank that you’re not going to buy it. But honestly assuming that the Turbo is a better buy at the same amount because it’s capable of more power is a poor assumption; properly set up, these 968s are superior track cars because of the instant power delivery and thoroughly enjoyable. Plus, this one afforded me the opportunity to relive one of my favorite track memories. And, surely, that is priceless.
