Mercedes-Benz W124 Estate Face Off: 1993 300TE vs. 1991 300TE

“Old Faithful.” A term of endearment bestowed upon the things which are reliable and always there for us. Few things in the automotive realm embody this idea more so than an old Mercedes-Benz. And few Mercedes-Benzes are more recognizable as a dependable motoring companion than the W124 estate. Produced from 1986 through 1995, the US would first be acquainted with the W124 estate in the form of the 300TD in 1987. For 1988, the gasoline inline-6 would be substituted and we would see only petrol variants on these shores until the model’s demise in 1995. The following two W124 estates we’ll look at today are from around the halfway point of W124 production and have covered similar amounts of mileage. They are in good, if not perfect condition but represent the kind of vehicle for those seeking out not a museum piece, but an honest, serviceable example.

The low mileage Estoril Blue BMW M Coupe we featured last month is back up for sale, on offer at $1,250 less than when we first came across it. Looking to drive a modern icon? I think everyone will agree the Clown Shoe, as it is sometimes called, could be the BMW equivalent of the air-cooled 911 in terms of collectability.

Art and the Automobile: Porsche Racing

I can’t really speak to how the younger generation fills their mind with automotive images today, but when I was a kid those images came through the exceedingly rare sightings on the street and the posters that I had on my wall. So as we continue our artwork theme for the holiday season, today we’ll take a look at some art reflecting Porsche’s racing history, with specific attention to Le Mans but with a few other interesting pieces added in. Racing has served as a centerpiece of Porsche’s branding almost since the beginning and its success in road racing has been integral to the success of the marque itself. And there is no stronger testament to a car’s combination of reliability and performance than a Le Mans victory.

1990 BMW 325is

While it’s still possible to find E30s for reasonable prices, they typically have a lot of miles or serious issues. Prices for clean examples have drifted northwards, following their golden-child M3 brethren. Every once in a while we get a good look at what an “ideal” example costs, which in my mind is a clean, unmodified car with 50k-100k miles. Today’s 325is fits most of the bill, looking impressively stock and well maintained inside and out after just 59k miles. The glaring mark against it is the automatic transmission; it’s like buying a classic piano but installing a self-playing mechanism. While the mileage and condition would put it in the top echelon of E30s, I have to imagine those really interested in the nicest of these cars would spend their time and money finding an ideal, manual-equipped car.
