#FailFriday: 1991 BMW 318is

Unless you’re going to do an engine swap, it seems like part of the charm of the E30 is that their power never outdid the chassis. Even with the range-topping M3, people call it underpowered (right after they sacrifice their first born to the car gods in hopes they might get one). So, if it’s a great chassis with too little power, why not accept it and get a little flingable toy? That’s exactly what the 318is was, a great looking sports sedan with less power than my 1988 Toyota pickup (which are not exactly known for their gusto). So, when I saw a red 318is for sale at $6k, I thought “ooh, great deal on a fun E30!” While not too long ago $6k would have bought a lot of E30, that is clearly no longer the case.

1993 Audi S4

Unfortunately I’m going to date myself here, but when I was in high school I had a love affair with Borbet Type C wheels. Sure, I loved BBSs, but the Type C was my then favorite – to the point where I had cut out the advertisement from Car and Driver that said in German “Lust after new wheels?” with an image of the Type C at the bottom and mounted it in my school locker. It was a brilliant ad campaign, and in the early to mid 1990s it was the wheel I wanted. When I got my first Audi – a 4000CS quattro – high on the list of “wants” was a set of 16″ Borbets. I saw them later at my first Audi event in 1997 at Lime Rock park, notably adorning two of my favorite models; a V8 quattro and S6 Avant. It was so memorable, in fact, that I took a photo of these cars in line with my favorite wheels – a photo I still have today. So, you’d think that when a set of my favorite wheels popped up on a period application like this 1993 Audi S4, I’d be super excited. But just to show how priorities change, I now find myself wishing it was wearing the original Fuchs-made 5-spokes. How weird is that?

1983 Volkswagen Jetta Diesel

I love MK1 Volkswagens in general, and the Jetta exemplifies the simple rectilinear style of the early 80s. Though weak, the diesel engines are robust and efficient, making them a perfect little around-town or mellow commuting car. Today’s spent most of its life with a single owner, covering just 119k miles – roughly a third of what these cars often achieve. If it continues on this path, it could be a nonagenarian before it needs a rebuild! It’s not perfect, but it has a lot right. Overall, with a no-reserve auction and low bidding, this could be a great deal for a utilitarian sedan.

1970 Porsche 914/6 GT

There’s always those cars out there I fail to give a second look, but having been involved with GCFSB for some time now, it’s opened my eyes to a whole new world of classics. Case in point, the Porsche 914. What began as a VW/Porsche joint venture was initially looked down upon a bit by the 911 drivers of the world. Now the car has become a bit of a newly discovered darling of the collector set, given the market’s penchant for anything air-cooled out of Stuttgart. Most 914s you come across are the four-cylinder variants, but there was a six cylinder variant on offer in the form of the 914/6. This particular 914/6 for sale in Florida was built to Brumos Racing specifications, with factory steel flared fenders accentuating those Fuchs wheels shod with Goodyear F1s.

1993 Porsche 928GTS

We are approaching two decades since the last 928 rolled off the Porsche assembly line, a span of time not much longer than the duration of the model’s run. From 1978 to 1995 the 928 served as Porsche’s flagship Grand Tourer and early on it was assumed to be the car that would remain the flagship vehicle of the marque altogether. The success of the 911 obviously changed that, but the 928 still lives on as Porsche’s only, and last (at least to now), front-engined V8 coupe. These cars possessed a uniqueness for the brand that has always set them apart with timeless styling that showed only incremental changes during the 17 years of its existence. As the last model variant the 928GTS featured a 5.4 liter V8 producing 350 hp surrounded by a sleek and lithe body that promised to transport you in a great deal of style at a great deal of speed. The example we see here is an automatic-transmission 1993 Porsche 928GTS, located in Colorado Springs, with just 44,000 miles on it.
