Back in 2018 I took a look at a special package offered on the E38 – the Highline:
Unlike most BMW special editions, the Highline wasn’t full of M badges and didn’t offer greater performance; it was, effectively, just some really nice colors paired up for the exterior and interior. Today’s car is not one of those, but like the Highline it’s appearing here specifically because of the color – Criollo Metallic (446). Let’s take a look:
Project cars are a very slippery slope. I’d say for every 100 projects that someone buys, maybe only a handful actually see the end of the line as “completed.” People love to get in over their heads in terms of what it will cost or the amount of skill it requires, with most of the time being a solid combination of both. Most of the time it is cheaper, easier, and much less painful just to buy the example you want totally original or already finished, then leave the projects for the professionals and retired folks with unlimited money.
However, there is one car that will bring anyone to it’s knees if you aren’t totally flush with cash and have a very specific set of knowledge: the Mercedes-Benz 600. I don’t need to go over the reasons why, but rather what it would take to get this 1965 up for sale in California back to its glory days. Also, this one has another little surprise.
Well, here it is. Just to get the cat out of the bag, this is a 2001 Porsche 911 Carrera coupe with an asking price of $58,000. Uh huh. Not a GT3, not some crazy paint-to-sample example with special wishes, just a Guards Red 996 with a little over 29,000 miles. I know we’ve seen some example of relatively common early 996 examples sell for big money lately, but this one might take the cake. Worth it? Eh.
The first-generation Porsche Cayman is right in the middle of that no man’s land territory right now. Clearly not new enough to be desired by for those who want the latest and greatest, but not old enough to become a classic. Still, a worthy car given how it dishes out, and most importantly the price they currently command. For the Cayman S, the value becomes even better. The race to 60 mph isn’t mind blowing or even all that impressive with 5.5 seconds needed, but this car is much more than just straight like speed. However, this example up for sale Illinois sure brings the looks, but the price seems to match. Still worth it?
VW’s radical redesign on the B3 resulted in a unique, angular look at still stands apart from the crowd today. And because the internals were based on VW’s A2 chassis like the Corrado, when the 2.8 VR6 debuted in the sporty coupe for ’92 it was only a matter of time until its four-door friend got it too. That happened in ’93 with the release of the GLX VR6. Slow sales resulted in Volkswagen’s refresh of the B4 Passat into the more traditional looking B4 for 1995; which saw new BBS wheels and body styling but the same dynamic performance. Today a clean Emerald Green Pearl Metallic ’96 manual has popped up for sale, and it’s worth a look:
