Our friends over at BlythBros. featured a piece last week regarding a road trip they took in their own Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 on a road trip to Canada. Ever the most resourceful enthusiasts, they packed their tools along with their bags and set off to visit our northern neighbors in this Cosworth legend. What struck me is how reliable and well suited it was for such a trip, considering its age. It really is a testament to how well made these cars were. It has passed through three owners and has seen light usage, clocking only 55k miles over almost 30 years.

2007 Porsche 911 Turbo

With the introduction of the 991 series 911, one of the more talked about points was the fact that the 911 GT3 would be equipped solely with the PDK dual clutch gearbox. Purists cried foul, but the more progressive minded enthusiasts began to wonder if we have reached the point where the manual gearbox has been soundly surpassed by the automatic and automated manual gearboxes. Looking solely at the statistics, it appears the answer is “yes.” This 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo is for sale from our friends at Sun Valley Auto Club in Hailey, Idaho. For some, being equipped with the Tiptronic gearbox might be a vex, but however you slice it, this is still a seriously fast performance vehicle capable of forging long-lasting road trip memories.

1979 Porsche 930

Let’s try this again: the Porsche 930 we posted on Thursday sold right around the time our post went up, so perhaps this one will remain on auction slightly longer. Here we have a Sahara Diamond Metallic 1979 Porsche 930, located in Maryland, with only 30,813 miles (the seller’s statement that the color is Kunstharzlack is incorrect – that just means the paint is a synthetic enamel). A rare and period-correct color such as this one does not come around too often and with such low mileage there is sure to be a lot of attention paid to this particular car.

2002 BMW M5

When I think of someday branching out beyond cars from 1988, one of the first that comes to mind is the business-class rocket E39 M5. What they lack in rarity they make up for by being one of the best sport sedans ever made, with the total package of comfort, speed, power, and handling. Today we have a low-mileage example with essentially no description, but hints pointing towards it being a loved weekender. I dig the M-stripes on the front spoiler mixing up the otherwise-stealth black on balck. A carbon lip appears to be the only modification, and is a subtly good-looking one at that. I’d like some more info before I bought and you can certainly find E39s cheaper, but less than 70k miles and good care would make this worth close to its asking price.

1989 Audi 100 Avant

In yesterday’s post on a 1978 Porsche 930, Rob asked “What happened to Guards Red“? Well, I have a similar question – what happened to all of the front wheel drive Audi 5000s and 100s? Occasionally we see some turbocharged front-wheel drive 200 models come up for sale, but even they’re a rarity; yet, in the 1980s it was those front-wheel drive models that provided the revenue stream for Audi, who struggled to sell vehicles increasingly towards 1990. The 5000 and 100 were actually pretty popular, too – competent, quiet highway cars that looked much more updated than the rivals from Munich when they launched. Sure, they weren’t the best performing cars in their day, but they were a reasonable alternative to the Mercedes wagon, which was the only other big German wagon at the time. Despite that, there just aren’t many left – especially not in this condition:
