1988 BMW M3 2.5 Evo-spec conversion

The unyielding rise E30 M3 prices has pushed them out of the range of reason for most enthusiasts. With standard examples pushing into the high teens, I wonder if an interested party these days might as well just go full hog and get the nicest example they can find. Today’s M3 is one of those, with the desirable 2.5L conversion done with a rebuild just 20k miles ago, along with the standard improvements like suspension, brakes, exhaust, etc. All that with a beautiful exterior utilizing the sexy and rare red-lined Evo bumpers, why pay $20k for good when you can $30k for great?

1988 BMW M3 for sale on eBay

The seller’s summary:

This 1988 (Build date 7/1987) E30 M3 started life as a 2.3 liter US Spec vehicle, yet has been transformed into a 2.5 liter EVO Spec beauty. 20k miles on the engine since the no expense spared rebuild. This M3 has been meticulously maintained, garaged from the elements, and it shows.

Redline full synthetic oil is used exclusively, and the engine does not leak a drop. The oil is replaced like clockwork, every six months. Transmission, and Differential fluids are also synthetic Redline, and were all changed within the last month.

The dash shows little signs of wear, and no cracks whatsoever. The only noticeable interior wear is on the side bolster of the driver’s front OEM seat. Cobra Imola race seats are currently installed, and that includes Schroth Harnesses on both seats. OEM seats are included with the vehicle.

The suspension consists of Ground Control Coilovers with a springrate of 700 lb fronts, and 550 lb rears. New Group N Bilstein Shocks on both ends. Ground Control Camber Plates. Rear Powerflex Bushings on sub-frame and Control arms, with Bimmerworld rear camber kit. New front wheel bearing were installed on both sides.

17″ Apex ARC-8 wheels with Kumho tires 235/40/17

15×8″ Revolution track wheels, with Toyo R888 225/50/15 tires (Included with vehicle)

Brakes include both stock pads, and Hawk front race pads for track use. BimmerWorld Stainless Steel brake lines.

Clutchmaster Stage 4 Clutch and Pressure Plate.

Engine: 2.5 EVO spec engine, 11:1 CP pistons, adjustable cam gears, Schrick 284/278 cams, EVO oil pump (shimmed), new E36 chain tensioner, EVO valve springs, Evo air box, all new valve shims, and valve job.

Iigo custom 2.5 chip

Exhaust: SuperSprint Race

This M3 is one of the finest examples available. It is driven everyday, and has been highly dependable. The AC unit needs a hose, and a recharge, but other than that it is in perfect working order.

I love the look of this M3. The Evo bumper is a nice touch that stands out on the Alpineweiss, and the restraint shown in not including the Evo II cattle-guard front spoiler keeps a clean look. The bite is even greater than the bark thanks to the mechanical work, as it should be. Bidding is at $13k with 2 days left, far short of the seller’s $29,950 Buy-It-Now price. Relative to the rest out there, it’s probably worth it. However, unless a bidding war starts up in the next 48 hours, maybe it’s a sign that $30k is still on the fringe of acceptable E30 prices if it’s not a low-mileage garage queen.

1986 Ford Capri 2.8i

The 25 year rule that applies to cars not federalized to be sold in the United States is always in the back of my mind. What interesting vehicles could one conceivably import to the free world without having the federal government up your rear this particular year? Well, it’s been 25 years since the last Ford Capri rolled off the assembly line in Europe and I think it’s about time we featured one of these cars that Ford claimed “you always promised yourself.”

1986 Ford Capri 2.8i for sale on eBay UK

Ford Capri 2.8i Special, 3 Doors, Manual, Fastback, Petrol, 1986 D Reg, 24,817 miles, Metallic Silver, 2 Owners. Full Service History. The car has only covered 24k miles from new and is one of the most sought after cars of its type.

This car has 1/2 leather Recaro trim in excellent condition, 5 speed box, sunroof and original radio/cassette player. The car has also been wax oil treated. Alloy wheels, metallic paintwork, insurance Group 14. A totally outstanding vehicle in showroom condition averaging less than 1500 miles a year!!! Crazy but true! We would strongly advise on an early viewing. Please call with any questions relating to this vehicle. Viewings by appointment only. £13,995 ono

At today’s current exchange rate, the asking price is around $21,800. For a mid eighties Ford, that’s serious coin, especially when you consider one would have to include shipping costs to the States. For the dedicated Ford fan, it may not be much, but knocks it out of the running for your typical practical classic collector.

The car has a large following in the United Kingdom, as it could be considered their version of the Ford Mustang. Here is a clip from the video series The Car’s the Star, hosted by former Top Gear presenter Quentin Wilson with regards to the Capri’s evolution.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SE

The 1991 model year marked the last year for the W126 Mercedes-Benz S Class. This car was a lot of things to many people. The company car of Wall Street. The choice the world over of diplomats and dictators alike. A star in many Hollywood features and television series. Even though it had many advances over it’s predecessor, the W140 S Class that followed somehow missed garnering the cult following of the W126.

Here’s a low mileage, final year 300SE for sale in Miami.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SE on eBay

You are viewing a stunning, low mile 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SE. Only 66k miles. Mint condition. Only two owners. Autocheck certified. Clean history. Completely Rust Free. Always garaged kept, original factory paint. Last year of the W126 chassis. It will not be easy to find another one like this. This vehicle is in showroom condition. No dents, dings or visible scratches. Everything works as it should, including A/C. Drives excellent, smooth engine and transmission. Ready to drive anywhere. Don’t let this one pass you by.

This W126 caught my eye for a few reasons. First, it’s the short wheelbase which makes it a little more reasonable size wise for every day use. Second, black is the perfect color for a W126, no matter what the year or model. Third, the 3.0 liter straight six is more reliable and cheaper to run than the bigger V8s. Last but not least, this is the final year for the W126. My current vehicle and the vehicle I owned prior to that are/were final production year models. Even though the W126 S Class had it pretty much together from the get go, the later models with their subtle updates are more desirable to most buyers.

1986 Mercedes Benz 560SEC AMG Widebody clone Signal Red

While many of the AMG cars of this era can slide somewhat under the radar with their dark or less flashy colors, think black, dark blue, an occasional silver, this one will not be missed by the authorities.

The Benz has been repainted in Mercedes signal red and this thing shouts. It has received the traditional mono-color scheme with all the chrome now body color, save some polish on the otherwise body color rims. The seller lists this as being an original U.S. market car that has had an AMG look kit added and the nicer Euro headlights, though one has a crack.

There are 73,000 miles on the 5.6 liter V8, not too high at all. The seller discloses some issues with the electronics on the car, but they seem like some relatively easy fixes.

Not being an original AMG car and with a few issues needing to be addressed means this won’t see the $20,000 range some AMG widebodies bring. Right now it is sitting with bids at $10,000 and the reserve not met.

1963 BMW 700 Cabriolet

Following World War II, there was widespread devastation to German industry. This led to shortages for all kinds of products, including automobiles. BMW began filling the void in the market for small, efficient cars with the Isetta microcar in 1956. Later that decade, BMW introduced a larger car, the 700, powered by a two cylinder, rear mounted engine. There were three body styles, a two door saloon, two door coupe and a convertible, which is what we see here for sale.

1963 BMW 700 Cabriolet on eBay

THE 700 IS A SMALL REAR-ENGINED CAR PRODUCED BY BMW IN VARIOUS BODY STYLES FROM AUGUST 1959 TO NOVEMBER 1965. THIS WAS THE FIRST BMW AUTOMOBILE WITH A MONOCOQUE STRUCTURE. THE COUPE MODELS WERE POWERED BY A 696 CC, 2 CYLINDER, 4-STROKE ENGINE THAT PRODUCED 30HP. THE CONVERTIBLE MODELS WERE EQUIPPED WITH TWIN SOLEX CARBURETORS GENERATING 40HP. THERE WERE ONLY 2985 CONVERTIBLE CARS WERE PRODUCED BETWEEN SEPT. 1961-NOV. 1964.

THIS BMW SPENT MOST OF ITS LIFE IN CALIFORNIA. WE HAVE A CALIFORNIA PINK SLIP DATED BACK TO 1975 (SEE PHOTO). IT WAS SOLD TO A COLLECTOR IN GEORGIA IN MARCH OF 2002. WE ACQUIRED THIS RARE BMW COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. THIS CAR CAN BE DRIVEN WITH ITS EXISTING CONDITION. HOWEVER, IT WILL NEED A FULL COSMETIC RESTORATION.

THIS RARE BMW 700 IS BY FAR ONE OF THE MOST ORIGINAL AND RUST-FREE ONES IN EXISTENCE. THE PAINT APPEARS TO BE ORIGINAL. IT IS VERY DULL AND CHALKY AT PLACES. IF THE CAR WAS RESTORED AT SOMETIMES IN THE LAST 48 YEARS, THEY MOST HAVE TAKEN IT COMPLETELY APART AS WE CAN NOT FIND ANY PAINT LINES. THE SEAT COVERS AND DOOR PANELS ARE ORIGINAL. WE HAVE A FEW OLD BROCHURES, MAINT. BOOKLETS, AND OTHER COOL PHOTOS FOR THE CAR. ONE OF THE PHOTOS SHOWS THE PICTURE OF THE CAR BACK WHEN IT WAS IN CALIFORNIA WITH A BLACK PLATE. THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD A NOTE IN THE PORTFOLIO THAT INDICATED THE MOST RECENT WORK IN 2002 AS FOLLOWS:

* NEW TOP
* FRESH TOP END ON MOTOR
* RARE STAINLESS STEEL EXHAUST
* KONI SHOCKS
* 5 NEW TIRES

WHEN WE ACQUIRED THE CAR, IT HAD NOT RUN FOR AT LEAST 9 YEARS. WE DRAINED THE FUEL TANK AND LINES, INSTALLED NEW SPARK PLUGS, INSTALLED A NEW BATTERY, CHECKED THE OIL AND ALL FLUIDS, TURNED THE FUEL VALVE ON, TURN THE IGNITION ON TO ACTIVATE THE DYNO,IT CRANKED RIGHT UP. THE CAR RUNS BEAUTIFUL.

EXTERIOR:

THE BODY PANELS LINE UP WELL. THE PAINT APPEARS TO BE ORIGINAL BUT WE ARE NOT SURE. IT IS OLD AND DULL. THERE ARE A FEW SMALL DINGS ON THE BODY. THE FLOORS ARE SOLID. WE HAVE TRIED TO SHOW THE FLOORS IN THE PHOTOS WITHOUT HAVING ACCESS TO A LIFT. THE FRONT FLOOR PANS ARE NEAR PERFECT. THE REAR FLOOR PANS HAVE SOME DENTS IN THEM DUE TO THE LOW CLEARANCE OF THE CAR OR IMPROPER LIFTING. THE AREAS AROUND THE DOOR, TRUNK, AND ENGINE COMPARTMENTS ARE NEAR PERFECT. IN SOME AREAS, THE PAINT HAS CHIPPED AND THE BODY PART WAS TARNISHED. ITS ONLY ON THE SURFACE. THE BUMPERS NEED TO BE PLATED AND THE SS TRIM NEED TO BE POLISHED. ALL GLASS AND LIGHT LENSES ARE IN GREAT CONDITION. THE EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLES ARE BOTH CRACKED. THEY NEED TO BE REPAIRED AND RE-PLATED OR REPLACED. THEY ARE MADE OUT OF POT METAL AND HARD TO REPAIR. THIS CAR GIVES A NEW MEANING TO A 48 YEAR OLD “RUST-FREE” CAR.

INTERIOR:

THE SEAT COVERS AND DOOR PANELS ARE ORIGINAL AND IN SERVICEABLE CONDITION. THE ORIGINAL CARS CAME WITH RUBBER FLOOR MATS BUT THE PREVIOUS OWNER INSTALLED CARPET. THE TOP IS ABOUT 9 YEARS OLD. IT IS IN GREAT CONDITION. HOWEVER, IT HAS SOME TINY PINCHES AT SOME PLACES. THE BOOT COVER IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE STEERING HAS A COVER. WE DID NOT WANT TO TAKE IT APART. THE DASH BEZEL AND MISC. TRIM HAVE SOME LIGHT PITTING.

MECHANICAL:

THE CAR CRANKS UP WITH COUPLE OF TRIALS. YOU HAVE TO TURN THE FUEL VALVE ON AND TURN THE IGNITION TO ACTIVATE THE SILENT DYNO. IT THEN CRANKS. IT TAKES A LITTLE GETTING USED TO. THE ENGINE RUNS VERY SMOOTH. IT DOES NOT SMOKE OR LEAK. THE 4 SPEED TRANSMISSION SHIFTS GOOD AND THE CLUTCH IS STRONG. WHEN WE GOT THE CAR, THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR WAS VERY LOW. WE ADDED SOME FLUID BUT STILL NO PEDAL. IT DOES NOT HAVE ANY LEAKS MEANING THAT EITHER THE SYSTEM NEEDS BLEEDING OR THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER REBUILT. THE HAND BRAKE WORKS. WE HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR JUST A FEW FEET USING THE HANDBRAKE. THE CAR HAS THE ABARTH STYLE STAINLESS STEEL EXHAUST THAT SOUNDS GOOD. THE TIRES ARE 9 YEARS OLD BUT LOOK LIKE NEW.

ELECTRICAL:

THE HEADLIGHTS, TAILLIGHTS, LICENSE PLATE LIGHT, AND DASH LIGHTS WORK. THE TURN SIGNALS ON THE RIGHT SIDE WORK BUT NOT THE LEFT SIDE. IT PROBABLY A FUSES OR BAD CONTACTS.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT:

THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT LOOKS GREAT FOR AN OLD CAR. THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF CORROSION ANYWHERE NOT EVEN AT HINGE AREAS OR EDGES OF THE LID.

FRONT COMPARTMENT:

THE AREA BELOW THE MAT, UNDER THE SPARE TIRE, UNDER-DASH, GAS TANK, ETC. LOOK GREAT. THIS CAR IS SO HONEST IN EVERY ASPECT. WE HAVE ALL THE TOOLS. THE JACK AND THE POUCH IS NOT ORIGINAL BUT FUNCTIONAL. ITS THERE IN CASE SOMEONE HAS A FLAT TIRE.

These 700s are neat little cars that helped in the postwar comeback of BMW and got the ball rolling again with BMW Motorsport. A 700 won the Nüburgring six hour touring car race in 1960 and was raced in other events by famous drivers such as Hans Stuck and Jacky Ickx. The seller has presented this 700 in an honest fashion and with some freshening, this 700 would make a practical, usable classic.

2000 Mercedes CLK GTR $1 million, reserve not met

While we suspect this might be just a touch outside the market of the majority of our faithful readers, why not at least dream.

This is number 17 of 25. With just under 1,500 miles, you wouldn’t exactly call this a daily driver. I suspect every outing you make in this car will become an experience if not for the nearly 700 horsepower, then for the throngs of people you will have surrounding you every where you go. This is the price you pay for sharing tastes with the Sultan of Brunei. Find some open road and all gawkers can be left far behind. The 7 liter V-12 on these sounds awesome and will either scare people away or draw more gear heads to your car. This is despite two mufflers that look like 50 gallon barrels.

At this point, with technology from the late 90s, the car is dated, but really who cares? To me the exterior is still fantastic. When these first hit the track I couldn’t look away and it still ranks as perhaps the number one modern classic on my list of most desirable cars. More exclusive than a Mclaren F1, more brutal than a Porsche GT1.

There can’t be more than a handful of these stateside. Any takers?

1990 Volkswagen T3 Westfalia Camper

It’s rather funny. With the SUV craze in full force for the last twenty years, the van has lost popularity. I sure don’t see as many of them on the streets as I do the atypical urban assault vehicle. Volkswagen’s van offerings have always been for those who drive to the beat of a different drummer, and one of my favorites was the T3 Camper Van. I remember playing around in one of these as a child when my father went to purchase a brand new 1987 Volkswagen Golf GT. It was always fascinating to me to have a half kitchen inside a vehicle.

Here’s a clean, low mileage Westfalia Camper for sale in California.

1990 Volkswagen Camper on eBay

I am selling my 1990 VW Westfalia Camper Van with a 4-speed transmission and a clear title. The vehicle has 42.8K miles (67,343 km) on the odometer. This a low-mileage rust-free van with a gorgeous interior and extremely strong engine. It has a new CD player and brand new front and rear Pioneer speakers. The van has alloy rims and 6-ply load-rated tires. It has a current California smog certificate. I am selling this Westfalia van with NO RESERVE price.

Recent repairs include:
> new rear brake shoes and wheel cylinders.
> new rear KYB shocks.
> complete tune up including new oxygen sensor, spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor.
> new valve cover gaskets and a new tail pipe.
> new oil filter, seal and oil change (20W-60 Castrol GTX oil).
> new front cross-drilled and vented rotors for cooler braking on hills and new ceramic brake pads for greater stopping power.
> the body was recently painted the original burgundy paint and the bumpers and grills were painted a special semi-gloss formula.
> a new clear sun-roof cover and winder.
> new utility covers and stickers were purchased from Van-cafe and installed along with new rear hatch struts (shocks) and a new locking radio antenna.

Included with the van are all the correct privacy curtains, front and rear tables and table stands as well as the original jack. This is a gorgeous, low-mileage van just looking for its next adventure.

With about five days left and no reserve, there has been no interest yet. The Doka trucks built on the T3 chassis have been pulling large sums as of late, and a clean, low mileage Camper such as this is bound to be attractive to the right collector. Whether someone is willing to pay almost $20,000 for the privilege remains to be seen. One thing is certain, this is one of the nicest Campers I’ve seen in quite some time.

And now all Volkswagen sells is the Volkswagen Caravan. Excuse me, Routan. Perish the thought.

I know many of you are already thinking $12.5k is a steep asking, but this car really stands out to me. First, I’ll bet this car really does have $23k in receipts because it shows, and I’ll bet it drives equally nice. Second, I’m really happy that this car carries an appropriate look and stance that is period appropriate. Everyone has their own style, and I think this is really tasteful. Finally, you couldn’t duplicate it for any less. I think about an e30 project all the time and this one is pretty close to what I’d want.

Sorry, couldn’t help myself tonight. I like it! Thanks for the forward John,

1991 BMW M5 for sale w/ Dinan

When I approached an acquaintance’s employer (a BMW mechanic for 30 years) about my pursuit of an E28 M5, he suggested the E34 for it’s further progression of the storied S38 and more refined interior. I nodded and appreciated his input, but I’ve known people with E34s, and while they are slick-and-mean super sedans, my penchant for 80s Bimmers is unwavering. However, if I were considering an E34, this local example is what I’d want. Clean red with black valences and the naked rims with the maligned turbine covers in the garage, it has Dinan Stage III suspension a D’Silva chip to sharpen it up for playtime.

1991 BMW M5 for sale on SF Craigslist

The seller’s description:

I’m selling a 1991 E34 M5 Dinan Stage III with 121,000 miles.
Dinan Stage III upgrades include:
Front and rear adjustable Sway Bars
Custom valved Koni struts and shocks
Lowering springs
Height leveling suspension delete
I have also installed Mark D’Silva EAT Performance Chip (340 hp)

This vehicle is good shape inside and out. I have a lot of the service history from Dinan. I Have only used Shell Helix/ Penzoil Platinum Euro formula oil. I have recently replaced the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor, power steering pump, power steering hoses, front end and center links with oem parts. The tires have less then 5,000 miles on them. The factory M5 turbine covers are included but are not shown in pictures. I took the car to Dinan and had one of their lead mechanics drive it and he was very impressed with the condition of the car. I have a lot of the previous owners maintenance records from Dinan on the car.

Serious buyers only please. No trades. I have a PPI for this vehicle. It checked out well, with some things that can be done (obviously for a car 20 years old) but the mechanic said verbally it was better than most for its age. I am accepting offers and am willing to work on a mutual price based on the cost incurred bringing this car up to perfect running order.

It sounds like the seller is a straight-shooter, offering to adjust price according to the little bit of work that needs to be done to bring it to perfection. He’s asking $12k, which seems reasonable considering the condition and upgrades. If I were a little older or a little less beholden to cars from the 80s, I’d be checking my bank account.

1998 BMW 318ti

I’ve never understood why the word hatchback is a dirty word in the United States. Having grown up in a family that drove a 1983 Honda Accord hatchback for 13 years, I can appreciate the practicality cars like these provide while confining themselves to a relatively small footprint. Now, with the resurgence of the MINI Cooper and Fiat 500, it seems some Americans are willing to look past the third door.

One of my favorite hatchbacks in recent memory was the E36 318ti hatchback. I found it to be much better proportioned than the Mercedes-Benz C230 Sport Coupe that followed it a few years later and some enthusiasts have gone ahead with tasteful M3 modifications which make these quite formidable little beasts.

Here is a late model version with, thankfully, a 5 speed manual transmission for sale in Connecticut.

1998 BMW 318ti on eBay

1998 BMW 318ti finished in fern green with dove gray leatherette. A very rare model in excellent condition. This 318ti was produced toward the end of the model being offered in the U.S. and it is much more generously equipped than earlier models (production date was 7/98, delivered 8/28/98). The car has a 5 speed manual transmission which makes it fun to drive and very economical. It is optioned with heated seats, 6 disk CD changer, sunroof, fog lights, and factory remote entry. The car has been well taken care of; having been garaged, carefully driven, and extremely well maintained. It was never used as an everyday car, but for weekly trips to the city as it is easy to park, therefore most of the miles were highway driven. The car is in excellent condition, has very low miles, and is well optioned, making it a hard to find excellent example of the 318ti.

The exterior of the car is in great shape. The paint is very deep and holds a strong shine. Because it was an extra car and was seldom used in the winter, it has no rust. The car has not been in an accident and only has minor blemishes, but far fewer than would be expected on a car of this age. It has a handful of nicks, touch-ups, and a scratch or ding or two but nothing excessive. The wheels are also in good condition with only minor scratching. The glass and rubber trim are free from blemishes.

The interior of the car is close to perfect. The seats are in amazing condition, particularly considering the fact that they are basically white. The material is very durable and had regularly been cleaned to avoid any discoloration that is typical with light interiors. The seats have no unusual wear and are firm and supportive with no sag. The carpets are very clean, there has been no smoking, pets, eating etc. in the car. There is the beginning of some separation on the rear corners of the headliner as it is freeing from the backing; however, it cannot be detected unless you are looking for it and it does not interfere with vision so I had not bothered with it. All pixels on the dash, radio and clock displays are present and bright. Every button in the car works as it should: AC is cold and heat is hot; all windows and sunroof open and close swiftly; and all other controls are working properly.

Mechanically the car is also in great shape. It has been extremely well maintained and I have all service receipts from the last 5 years, including: recent services; tires and rear brakes were new at 79k miles; new catalytic converter, struts, right control arm, drive belts, a/c pulley, alt belt tensioner etc., and major tune up at 73k miles; and previously had new radiator, water pump, valve and timing cover gaskets. The only issues that I am aware of is that the air bag light is on and the hood support shocks are in need of replacement (I had used a golf club to hold the hood open in the photo). The car has been meticulously maintained over the years and drives and operates as it should.

The 318ti is a very unique car that combines the efficiency of a compact car with the safety and appeal of a BMW. I have averaged around 32mpg on the highway, which is the only type of driving I do with it. In addition to being very efficient, the car is extremely useful being a hatchback, the trunk is large and the capacity is enormous when the seats are folded down. These cars are very durable and, given the low miles, there is a lot of life left in this one. The combination of low miles, excellent condition, and meticulous maintenance makes this car a very rare find.

These are great little cars and besides the E30, the E36 is, in my opinion, one of the best looking 3 series. The proportions are a little skewed given the shorter length, but this would be a fantastic car to commute with or for the first time driver, as it is not too overpowered, but includes the safety features common in new vehicles.
