Mercedes-Benz just released a new CL coupe and I must say, as compared to many of the new designs coming out of Stuttgart, this was one of my favorite ones as of late. From the rear angle, this is a decent looking big coupe. The AMG version is a bit fussy for my tastes, but the new S-Class Coupe does a pretty good job of carrying on the gracefulness of earlier S class coupes. Rewind a few decades, and it’s possible to enjoy some classic pillarless coupe motoring on a budget. First up is this low mileage 1994 S500 coupe for sale in Florida in classic silver on black leather.

The C140 coupe is perhaps one of the least graceful of the S-class coupe genre. While you couldn’t call any of the generations small, the slab sided styling gave this a bit of an imposing look. Step inside, and you are greeted by a wealth of leather and the wood trim is copious, extending even to the door handles. Sure, there are a lot of electrical bits that could go wrong, but in terms of running costs, this V8 version is a lot more reasonable than its V12 sibling. This is a lot of car for the money and I have to think at some point, these will eventually become more collectable.

The C126 SEC was always my favorite when it came to big Mercedes coupes. The R107-based SLC coupe had proportions that were interesting, to say the least, with the extra length added behind the trailing edge of the doors. It is still a favorite of mine, but often forgotten. When launched for 1982, the SEC was really more of a complete package yet still had a lithe look to it that was lost once the larger C140 debuted in 1992. If it were my money, I’d have to go with the 560SEC. Maybe it is because this is the generation of S-Class I grew up with, but I think many will agree that this generation was rather exceptional.

1990 superior. BTW I just noticed the 94 looks like a bloody Merkur in profile.
Can’t really compare these two cars today because history has segretated them into two different classes.
The S500 is buy it now for $13K.
The SEC is advertised locally at $29K.
Both of them are repair nightmares in the electronics department. I would not get either one.
