The Porsche 356 entered its final year of production just as the Porsche 911 was becoming known to the world and in their respective designs we can see the ways in which Porsche evolved one car so as to transition to the other. Today, many of the rarer 356 variants fetch prices at auction well into six-figure territory, but even a standard Coupe is prized amongst Porsche and vintage-automobile enthusiasts alike. The car we have featured here comes from the final year of 356 production: a Black on Black 1965 Porsche 356C Coupe that has spent its entire life in the easy climate of California.

We previously featured a modified 1967 Porsche 911 Sunroof Coupe that was built in this vein and like that car this definitely won’t appeal to everyone, but in their own way each of these are fantastic. The car featured here is a 1965 Porsche 356SC Coupe that has had extensive work to make it into a vintage hill-climb racer along with some visual modification to give it a hot rod/outlaw sort of look. Though modified, this 356 retains its original engine and transmission, and comes with the CoA for each, though both have been rebuilt by Vic Skirmants for improved performance. A car nearing 50 years of age that is in good condition is difficult enough to find, one that also possesses unique and well-documented modifications such as this one is a rare bird indeed.

The reality of building a car that can float is that it makes an interesting looking boat. Similarly, if you build a boat that can drive on the road, it’s a bit of an oddity. Of course, combine the two, and you’ve got what is neither a particularly good car, nor a particularly good boat; but it can do both, and that makes it unique. Last fall I took a look at one of these unique Amphicar 770s, a light blue swimmer that looked lovey and I joked would be what my drawing rendition of a Mercedes 280SE would look like. Today there’s another that’s about as nice as they come:

The beauty of the Volkswagen Beetle as a practical classic is that so many of them were built. Over 21 million, in fact. Sure, this doesn’t make them particularly rare, but given the laws of attrition, there are still a few good ones lurking out there, even those that are unmodified.
