Classic or Iconic? 1973 BMW 2002Tii v. 1975 BMW 2002 Turbo

To me it’s always a bit interesting to talk about people’s motivations in getting a particular car, especially so when that car is a classic. For example, consider my Audi GT versus a Quattro. These days, if you can find one a mint condition Audi GT will set you back around $6,000 – $8,000 for the very best examples we’ve seen. However, that amount may get you a wreck of a Quattro, but likely not a particularly drivable example. In terms of driving experience, the GT is out of the box 90% of the Ur-Quattro experience for 90% plus of the time. Brought to a show, many non-Audi folks could probably not tell them apart. Yet, in terms of value gap, the iconic Quattro far outstrips the classic GT. We see it in other areas, too – for example a 73 911S versus a 77 911S, a E28 535is versus a M5, or even a 325is versus an M3. If you’re smart with your money, choosing the lesser example may not get you the headlines, but stretching your budget to get into a less serviceable iconic car is not likely to bring you more happiness, only more headaches. Take the two 2002s we have here; a freshly rebuilt, ready to roll 2002Tii and a somewhat tired, restoration ready 2002 Turbo:

1973 Porsche 911T Coupe

1974 brought with it one of the more significant, and unloved to many, design changes for the Porsche 911. Gone was the hood that stretched fully to the front of the car replaced by the rough protrusions of federally-mandated impact bumpers. Now, to be fair, these bumpers didn’t destroy the design and the 911 continued to be a very sharp looking car with few alterations to its appearance over the next 15 years. Still, something was lost and the pre-1974 cars possess an originality in their intention that other 911s struggle to match. The car featured here comes from the final year of the long-hood design, a really pretty Gemini Blue 1973 Porsche 911T Coupe, located in Pennsylvania. If the stated mileage can be verified, this would qualify as one of the lowest mileage pre-1974 911s I’ve come across.

1973 Mercedes-Benz 280C

There’s always talk about classic cars suddenly getting out of reach for us mere mortals, but dig down a bit into a manufacturer’s portfolio and there are still a few cars out there to be had on a shoestring budget without requiring massive amounts of expensive restoration work or mechanical fixes. Case in point the Mercedes-Benz W114 Coupe. There’s been a lot of discussion on the Benz forums as to why these particular Mercedes are cheap, especially since they were the first all-new chassis to appear post World War II. Perhaps the appearance was a bit staid and levels of luxury were down a bit in comparison to the contemporary S class. Maybe it was the carbonation problems that some owners of petrol engined examples experienced. Finding a good classic Mercedes that is in good running shape is not easy when your budget is under $10,000 these days, especially when it comes to a coupe. This 280C for sale in Georgia, though, fits the profile.

1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC with 33,000 Miles

Relative to the W113 that it replaced, the R107 and C107 coupe version are still relatively unloved and undervalued in the world of classic Mercedes-Benz models. Much like the E24 6-series compared to the 3.0CS, the design wasn’t quite as striking as the original but the refinements of the newer model really changed the class the car was considered in. If the W113 was a bare-bones roadster, the W113 added luxury and weight to the recipe; for some, it was very appreciated and made the R/C107 a more usable car than the W113 was. For others, the “Sport” was gone and the result was more a personal luxury vehicle. But is that such a bad thing? The SLC has always been an interesting car to me, and today’s example is no different. An early model, it has the slim European bumpers and steel wheels giving a classic look:
