1980 Porsche 911SC Weissach Edition

Porsche has never been shy about celebrating or commemorating its achievements through special edition models of the 911. So, when they wanted to celebrate and honor the achievements of the Motorsport department, the choice was obvious and the Weissach Edition 911 was released in 1980. Based off of a standard 911SC Coupe, the Weissach Edition came in either a Black or Platinum Metallic exterior with Platinum painted Fuchs wheels all surrounding a Doric Gray leather interior contrasted by Burgundy carpeting. Each car would also come standard with a whale tail, but it is the interior especially that set these cars apart from others versions of the 911SC. The Weissach Edition featured here is located in Carlsbad, California and sits with 66,309 miles.

1980 Volkswagen LT31 Van

$_57

I’ve been on a bit of a van kick recently (forever?), and today we have a gorgeous VW that is, in fact, NOT a Westy, Transporter, or Vanagon at all. It’s one of VW’s commercial vehicles from Europe that has spent time as a fire van, but has covered just 13k miles in its 24-year life. Apparently the seller couldn’t register it in California due to the intense EPA rules, which is hugely disappointing as it means I can’t buy it. If you live in any other state, though, this van is impeccably clean, with the normally-dull firetruck’s paint still shining. The interior is an enticing proposition as well; while I’m usually musing about how I would discard the original equipment and turn a van into a camper, this one is all set to become whatever you want as it’s just extremely clean metal with some useful mounting points in the side. And, as always, I fricking love jump seats. This is a very cool and very unique VW van that has a Buy-It-Now lower than just about every nice US-market VW Van sale.

10K Friday: Ronin v. The Transporter

On the surface, the themes were very similar; two movies staring action superstars playing above-the-law criminals with an amazing ability to extricate themselves from seemingly impossible conditions against improbable odds driving large, fast executive cars. Despite this, the movies Ronin and The Transporter couldn’t be more different. I watched the former on the edge of my seat, captivated by the mystery, floored by the incredibly filmed stunt scenes, the attention to reality and detail, and the staggeringly awesome lineup of cars. The latter I struggled to get through at all; I managed to make it about half way through before giving up. To this day, I still haven’t seen the ending of the first movie, and nothing more than trailers of the second. Is there a third? I’m sorry, I’m sure it made a gazillion dollars in the box office but frankly when I watched the clip of the Audi A8L W12 corkscrewing through the air to miraculously remove a bomb from the bottom of the car on a perfectly placed scrap-metal magnet hanging in mid-air I lost all interest. I can suspend my belief for a movie like Ronin because there was an air of reality to it; the characters were flawed and mortal. Sure, there were problems with the plot and even some of the stunts – I mean, they don’t show Jean Reno standing in line at the DMV to register the 450SEL 6.9, for example. But in terms of reality, it was on this planet at least, while The Transporter seemed to be set in some alternate Japanese-live-action-anime reality I’m not sure I want to understand. Nevertheless, the central plot to both is about cars and driving (at least a bit), and today you can purchase just about all of the cars featured in these films for around $10,000 – so which would you have? I had to use a bit of creative with some of the versions, so you’ll bear with me I hope – here we go!

Heap of the Week: 1980 Volkswagen Scirocco S

After touring around Portugal for the past week and seeing a few of the newer Volkswagen Sciroccos on the street, it had me thinking a lot about the first and second generation of Sciroccos and what made them popular stateside. Introduced as a replacement for the Karmann Ghia in the early 1970s, this fastback wore smart, chiseled bodywork penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Based on the recently introduced Mk1 Golf architecture, this car adhered to the old formula of taking a rather ordinary car and making it look extraordinary. Early Mk1 Sciroccos are getting hard to come across in good nick, but this 1980 Scirocco S for sale in Florida is a good baseline for someone looking for a mild restoration project.
