I mentioned briefly in a previous post the transmission differences between the ’86 and ’87 model years for the 911 and we can see here how much sellers take pains to emphasize the presence of the G50 transmission. I always find it a humorous strategy. As I mentioned in that post, and as a few noted in the comments, the G50 is better, but not necessarily enough so that we should ignore the early years of these cars. With that said, we could probably make the case that the transmission should matter more to collectors rather than those looking for a driver as the G50 will likely show better value down the road. Which brings us to the car seen here: a Dark Blue 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in California, with just shy of 50,000 miles on the clock. This Cabriolet appears to be in excellent shape all around, the mileage is pretty low, and it came with a few highly desirable options, all of which likely suggests interested parties will have an eye towards the future when considering this as a purchase.

Alright, it’s time to go shopping in the bargain-Porsche aisle. In a world where poor-condition 911s can command five-figure price tags and pristine examples well into the six figures, the 944 remains the everyman’s Porsche. Sure, one will never be as exciting as a 911 Turbo, but the combination of a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive always provides a recipe for fun. So, if you’re looking to get into a Porsche for the first time, or perhaps you just want a good car for track days without having to worry about writing it off, then an entry-level 944 makes a great option. The example featured here is a 1987 Porsche 944 Coupe, located in Texas, that looks fantastic in its Burgundy paint.

3 CommentsWhen it comes to memorable Audis from the 1980s, the 5000 undeservedly gets little attention. That’s especially true when you back out the turbo and quattro versions of Audi’s flagship sedan. But in many ways it was the success of the large Audi sedans that allowed for the more exotic Quattro development – and the 5000 was a revolutionary success. Compared with what was on offer from rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW at the time, the 5000 was downright futuristic and more modern in every way. It was an aerodynamic marvel, quiet and capable of returning excellent fuel economy. It was also hugely practical, too – especially when configured in hatchback Avant spec. Though the sloping rear glass dropped storage space a bit, it wasn’t much – and it’s amazing what can fit inside of these cars. Indeed, I used my 200 Avant to bring a complete 7A inline-5 home; the hatch actually assisted this since we could get the engine hoist over the car – something that would be impossible in most wagons. Still, most enthusiasts want the turbocharged quattro version, leaving the few front drivers that remain throwbacks to a time when a 120 horsepower large wagon was a reasonable option:

1 CommentThe rare to see Audi Coupe Quattro that we featured a little over a week ago has popped back up on Ebay with some new, better photos and a better description. Included are shots of the underbody corrosion that will likely scare less devoted fans away. The custom interior and revised exterior will also polarize fans, but this remains one of the few true Coupe Quattros in the U.S.. Bidding as of writing is already fairly strong at $4,000 – about the cap of what I’d consider this car worth currently but some may wish to pay more for the exclusivity:

1 CommentWhen I owned my 1988 BMW 325is, I lusted after an E24 M6. Even though the E30 was a more current design, the lure of “the shark” was strong, but out of reach for me financially. Today, a curious thing has happened. It seems that an E30 in good nick with the right specification is gaining ground on E24 M6 values. But just how long will this continue, as collectors become more hip to the virtues of the original 6 series with the Motorsports badge?
