1987 Audi Coupe Quattro – REVISIT

The rare to see Audi Coupe Quattro that we featured a little over a week ago has popped back up on Ebay with some new, better photos and a better description. Included are shots of the underbody corrosion that will likely scare less devoted fans away. The custom interior and revised exterior will also polarize fans, but this remains one of the few true Coupe Quattros in the U.S.. Bidding as of writing is already fairly strong at $4,000 – about the cap of what I’d consider this car worth currently but some may wish to pay more for the exclusivity:

Thought they recently have surpassed the 25 year importation boycott into the United States, it’s not likely that you’re ever going to see many of this model car on these shores. Sure, there’s a group of Audi enthusiasts who are particularly excited when they see a B2 Coupe Quattro pop up for sale – a truly rare event in the U.S.. However, clean models demand a serious premium because of their rarity – a premium which pushes them squarely into the price point of the turbocharged, box flared big brother. Though the drivetrains are for the most part the same, the addition of the turbo, bigger wheels and flares changes the category of ownership from neat footnote to headline splash. As such, it’s understandable why the Coupe Quattro is such as niche vehicle. Nevertheless, it’s really neat to see one for sale in the U.S., and this occasion is no different.

Year: 1987
Model: Coupe Quattro
Engine: 2.2 liter inline-5
Transmission: 5-speed manual
Mileage: 128,791 mi
Price: $6,500

I had to relist this because the last winning bidder didn’t have the funds to purchase it. PLEASE DO NOT BID IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE FUNDS TO PAY. Serious buyers only!!!

What you are looking at is a rare 1987 Audi Coupe GT Quattro. I purchased this car out of Manchester, UK and shipped it here to South Carolina in September 2012. This is the European spec vehicle. VIN # is WAUZZZ85ZHA023910, it was hard to list the VIN in the initial form so here it is!

The Good:
– It has the naturally aspirated 2.2L 5 cylinder engine. I have had the head rebuilt 3,000 miles ago and the engine’s been re-tuned by JK Automotive in Summerville, SC
– The exhaust has been been rebuilt from the downpipes on, the sound of it has a powerful sound as you throttle it
– The wiring harness has been partially rewired professionally by Horner Bros. Auto Electrics in England for reliability
– The interior has been fully re-stitched in Black leather with Red piping
– Rare 16″ Team Dynamics wheels
– No dings or dents
– It drives strong without any hesitations

The Bad:
– Underbody corrosion in some spots including some bubbling under some paint areas (see pics)
– Suspension needs attention, my recommendations are new polyflex bushings and re powder coating of the complete suspension
– The clutch works fully, but the pedal has about an inch of play. It’s fairly typical of Audis this age
– Passenger side window regulator is bad
– Some of the interior bits are loose, but easy to fix

Overall, it is a very solid car which can easily be used as a daily driver if desired. I drove it to the EuroNation 2014 Car Show on 6/21 and placed 1st over the other Audis in my class!! (see pic) sorry, trophy not included in the sale.

Arrangements to view the car are welcomed by appointment.

I drive it about 2-3 days a week and enjoy it wholeheartedly. It’s completely garage kept and the sound of the exhaust note is one of the coolest I’ve heard. It’s hard for me to part ways with this, but due to the new toy I just purchased, I need to sell it on to someone that can take it to the next level to fine tune it completely. I’m starting the bid cheap with no reserve, at this price it’s a complete steal! I’m pretty sure there’s not many Coupe GT Quattros imported to the US.

Underneath, there are few differences from the 4000S/CS Quattro that came to the U.S., but outside you get the great shape of the Coupe. This particular car has some modifications that make it look a little less original and a bit more purposeful; the white Team Dynamics alloys are a nod to the Sport Quattro wheels that came hued in white. They hint at performance that really isn’t there, unfortunately, but these 2.2 inline-5s are still entertaining to drive and unbelievable when properly equipped with snow tires in the white stuff. It’s a shame that this car is apparently suffering from underbody corrosion; while a rebody it possible from a GT, it’s not really a simple matter and again the pricepoint for your work suddenly pushes you squarely into Quattro territory. I suppose it wouldn’t be to hard to pass this car off as a Turbo variant, as most non-specialists can’t tell the difference – heck, even my GT gets called an “Ur” from time to time at events, but that’s not really the point of buying this car. Though it’s appealing to think about owning this car for the uniqueness, I’m afraid even as devote a Coupe fan as I am, I’d pass – I’d instead choose to pick up a clean 4000 model for around the same price. If the price dipped to below $5,000, it may be worth the repairs.
