1987 Porsche 924S

We’ve talked countless times about how many of the cars from the 1980s have recently undergone a pricing metamorphosis, taking what were once the entry-level mainstays of German automobile enthusiasts out of the reach of most mortals. This doesn’t really take the full picture into account, though – the reality is that there are still many cars that are very good, readily available and affordable. One of the best has to be the Porsche 924S. Overlooked by Porsche enthusiasts as too cheap to be a “true” Porsche, the crowd that enjoys the relative secrecy of the 1987 and 1988 Porsche 924S has enjoyed a true gem for the past few decades. Power, suspension and brakes are effectively the same as the fat-fendered 944, so if you can deal with the narrow body and wheels and older dashboard, you actually get a slightly quicker car in the 924S. Many were maintained well by their loving owners who were obviously proud of their foray into Porsche ownership leaving the next owner to enjoy the fruits of their labor. This 1987 Guards Red example sure looks the part:

Double Revisit: Early and Late 4000 Quattros – Which would you choose?

Two of the 4000 Quattros I wrote up in December are still on the block. Which of these all-wheel drive wonders would you choose? The first of these cars is a Zermatt Silver 1984 example which needs some love, but is now available at a much more realistic price point – less than half of what the asking price was in December.

One-owner 1987 BMW 325

$_3

Perfect, unmolested E30s are a thing of beauty for so many reasons. The few around here are driven by old folks, and I think about them lovingly enjoying the quintessential sports sedan they bought over 2 decades ago. Today’s is of the refreshingly clean and original variety, living with the same owner in Arizona since it was bought. In that time, he hasn’t quite covered 100k miles and has clearly doted upon this creampuff inside and out – check out the smashing AutoCheck score. Sure, E30s are great for Lemons, but they’re also great for just about everything – that’s why they have become the legend they are today. If you’re looking for an almost-new, pleasantly normal copy, watch this no-reserve auction and hope it stays reasonable!

1987 Volkswagen Jetta GLi

Nearly as rare to see as the 1984 Jetta GLi is the model that replaced it, the 1985-1987 8V Jetta GLi. While I’ve lamented several times that we didn’t receive the 4 door GTi until just recently, the reality is that for all intents and purposes, through 1992 the GLi was a 4 door GTi with a trunk. They shared nearly all of their running gear, styling and performance; the only difference was the non-folding seats and the trunk. Despite this the GTi was the more popular option for most, and the GLis that were sold suffered from rust and heavy use. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I saw a fairly clean early A2 GLi for sale; but here’s a pretty good example today!

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

Given all this talk of stock market fluctuations and an economic recovery that has gone through fits and starts, where is a good place to park your money? Time in memorial has shown that a Porsche 911 is perhaps one of the strongest automotive investments out there. While desirability has come and gone with everything from Hemi Cudas to certain Ferrari models, the 911 has always been on the collectors’ radar. With two generations of water-cooled 911s behind us now, the earlier air-cooled 911s seems to keep creeping up in value year after year. This triple black 3.2 Targa for sale in California is an example of just how long these sports cars will last if care if lavished on them.
