For some time, there was a giant gulf in between European-spec cars and U.S. spec cars. Granted, part of that divide still exists today if the large assortment of cars that do not make it to these shores, but at least enthusiasts can rejoice that at last – for the most part – performance versions that are available in Germany are very close to the same that we receive here. One of the last notable cars to exhibit the large divide was the E36 M3; while Europeans enjoyed over 280 horsepower from the individual throttle body S50B30 in 1992, the later released U.S. spec M3 carried an entirely different motor with some 40 horsepower less. Though the S50B30US is certainly a great motor by itself, the knowledge that the “better” version existed across the pond somehow took a bit of legitimacy away from it. Also differentiating the European versions were better floating rotor brakes, better glass headlights, better lower and stiffer suspension, and some neat interior options:

Pulling together enough legendary names to nearly create it’s own “Justice League”, the Mercedes-Benz 500E saw the combination of two of the most storied names in German automobiles – Porsche and Daimler-Benz. The 500E was sure a serious car out of the box with 320 horsepower and torque to match; but for some, that wasn’t enough. For those enterprising individuals with deep pockets, their Stuttgart superhero saw the introduction of a third legendary name; AMG. AMG had been placing larger displacement engines in Benz models for years, and the 500E proved no different. It even became an official product since Daimler owned a major stake in AMG; the merger would see a new range of high performance out of the box Mercedes models like the SL60 and E60. With a 50 horsepower boost in horsepower and 75 more lb.ft of torque, the 6.0 brought the 500E to another level of performance, chopping nearly a second off its 0-60 times and giving close to Porsche 911 Turbo levels of straight line performance. But while the E60 and SL60 models are pretty rare, it was more common to do what this owner did – ship the car to AMG for a motor swap after purchase:

6 CommentsGiven the relatively short time in which it was around, it is kind of staggering to consider the number of variants produced of the 964. Even looking beyond the many different Carrera 2 and Carrera 4 models there were also 4 different turbos, the Speedster, the Carrera RS America, the Carrera Cup and the America Roadster. Granted, some of these were made in very small numbers, but still we certainly could not accuse Porsche of being complacent during this time! And here we have one of those rarer variants, a 1994 Black Metallic Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6. For the final two model years of the 964 Porsche released a turbocharged version of the standard 3.6 liter flat-six that had been the primary motivation of the rest of the 964 line since its inception. While this wouldn’t be the last 964 Turbo, that would be the 3.6 Turbo S, these are still highly sought after and prized by Porsche enthusiasts as some of the last rear-drive 911 Turbos Porsche produced.

10 CommentsMercedes-Benz just released a new CL coupe and I must say, as compared to many of the new designs coming out of Stuttgart, this was one of my favorite ones as of late. From the rear angle, this is a decent looking big coupe. The AMG version is a bit fussy for my tastes, but the new S-Class Coupe does a pretty good job of carrying on the gracefulness of earlier S class coupes. Rewind a few decades, and it’s possible to enjoy some classic pillarless coupe motoring on a budget.
