1997 Porsche 911 Carrera

White is a color in vogue these days. From Audi A8s to Volkswagen GTIs, it seems to be the color of choice, whether on the auto show display or the dealer forecourt. You could almost be mistaken that this 911, one of the last of the air-cooled examples, could be a present day model in the Porsche lineup. Amazingly this sports car is nudging ever closer to twenty years of age. For sale in New York, this 993 Carrera is an overdose of white, with color matched Turbo Twist wheels complimented by a low 57,000 miles on the clock.

Double Take: Dueling Volkswagen B4 TDi Passats

As enthusiasts cars go, the words “TDi” and “Passat” don’t generally generate a tremendous amount of enthusiasm. Of course, that belies the entire subculture of Volkswagen enthusiasts that are diesel obsessed; but even amongst them the Passat TDi is rarely the first car they’d choose. Perhaps the exception to that is the wagon version of the B4, which offered smart looks and unbelievable fuel mileage. However, we looked at one on our Facebook fanpage, and people baulked as the price approached $15,000 on a high mile, 20 year old Passat diesel. So what’s here today then? Well, if you need a smart commuter, want to get 50 miles a gallon with a bit of sleeper style, the Passat sedan offers arguably better build quality than the Mk.2 and Mk.3 Jetta diesels did and can be had for a more reasonable budget. Today, there are two nearly identical mileage B4 TDis available on Ebay – let’s start with the older one:

1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Certain cars have the ability to attract our attention more than others with a presentation that invites us to explore them more fully. In some cases those cars end up being fairly standard while others possess extra details that make them more interesting, more appealing, or both. Such is the case with the car featured here: a Glacier White 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Illinois. Generally, I am not a huge fan of white cars, but the lines of the 993 seem to work very well with that color and we don’t see a lot of them. Added to that are some interesting options – sunroof delete, sport suspension, limited-slip, aero kit (which I know is very love/hate) – that take this from your everyday 993 to a 993 that stands apart both in appearance and in performance. Cars like these will never appeal to everyone, but it’s still nice to come across factory-optioned variants of what were already great cars.

1997 BMW 318ti California Roof

It seems that another generation of small BMW hatchbacks – I’m looking at you, 1 series – will be passing us by here in the US market. But, not many people can blame BMW, as there were few takers for its mid 1990s experiment, the 3 series Compact. Sold here as the 318ti with the 1.9 liter four cylinder engine found in the Z3 Roadster, this car was all E36 saloon from the A-pillar forward but carried a vastly redesigned hatchback rear section with trailing arm rear suspension and simpler, one piece dashboard inside. This 318ti for sale in Pennsylvania has the rare California Roof option, which equips the 3er hatchback with a canvas folding roof, providing almost targa-like motoring pleasure.
