1998 Mercedes-Benz C230 with 47k miles

When I look back through all of the cars I’ve owned, one car stands out. My 1998 Mercedes-Benz C230. Offered for two model years in the US lineup, this was the entry level Mercedes of its time, powered by a naturally aspirated, 2.3 liter inline-4 producing 148 horsepower. Not an earth shattering figure, but this car wasn’t about horsepower. For me, it represented the last of the old guard for Mercedes, a time when engineering took precedence over budgets. I miss that car to this day, but on a recent trip to Lisbon, Portugal, it was comforting to see a bunch of these W202 C classes pressed into service as taxis. These are cars with staying power. Those in search for a good one should take a look at this 1998 C230 with under 50,000 miles on the clock.

1998 BMW M Roadster

Back before EVERY DAMN CAR ON THE ROAD had gills/portholes/slices on the front fender, it was a distinctive mark on the BMW Z3. The silver slash that marked the M versions is even more eye-catching, and yanked my head around yesterday in the constant hunt for ///Ms. Today we have the wee beasty original M Roadster, a handsome convertible that may not have the following the Miata but certainly scores a few more masculinity points. This silver example has covered less than 35k miles on the not-quite-as-sweet S52 inline-6, which will help the price stay sane while keeping the exhaust note sweet.

1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S

I’ve made clear throughout these pages my general love for the classic 911 and there are a variety of reasons for that love. But from a perspective of pure understated aesthetic beauty the 993 Carrera S quickly moves to the top of the list. With all of the corners of the classic design smoothed over the 993 in general has less of a wild look to it. Add to that the wider rear of the Carrera S and cover the whole thing in a deeply lustrous black paint and you have what many might consider the apex of 911 design. These cars were no slouch when it came to performance either with nearly 300 hp delivered to the rear wheels via a standard 6-speed manual transmission. They never possessed the sheer terror-inducing capabilities of the 930, but as a more refined 911 the 993 checks all of the boxes. The example featured here is a Black on Black 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S, located in New York state, with 73,088 miles on it.

1998 BMW Z3

The BMW Z3 got a grand start in life, appearing alongside the James Bond Character in the 1995 movie GoldenEye. It was a Z3 exactly as you see here, in Atlanta Blue, a color that still looks great to this day. But enthusiasts were left a bit wanting for more at its launch, as this sleek two-seater was initially powered by a 1.9 liter inline-4 cranking out 138 horsepower. A bit underwhelming for what was to be BMWs first mass market foray into the roadster category. In 1997, the cries were answered with the insertion of a six cylinder engine under the hood and an M variant the following year. With ever more powerful variants having appeared down the line, the initial four cylinder Z3s are a bit of a bargain and a solid choice for some summer thrills on a budget.

1998 Porsche Boxster

With the revival of the roadster in the early 1990’s Porsche decided it was finally time to introduce a new model, something the marque had not done since the ’70s. Rather than design another GT to replace the outgoing 928 and 968, Porsche went with a mid-engined entry-level roadster that would appeal to a wider demographic than the more hard-edged 911. With a 2.5 liter flat-6 and 5-speed manual directing their energies to the rear wheels the Boxster was generally very well received and sold like mad. While admittedly the early Boxster was a bit soft and a bit slow, flaws Porsche would correct a few years later with the Boxster S, it still served its basic purpose of broadening the Porsche audience. The car featured here comes from the first generation: an Arctic Silver 1998 Porsche Boxster, located in Florida, with 56,950 miles.
