One has to wonder how the product planning session went when Mercedes-Benz green lighted the E class AMG estate. Was management on holiday or did someone lose a bet? Whatever the case, the appearance of the E55 AMG wagon was a definite curiosity when it appeared in US dealers, even in very limited numbers. Who bought these cars? Power hungry soccer moms? Dads who were ticked off they had to surrender the sports car? Parents who couldn’t bear the thought of something that so obviously screamed “I give up?†Whatever the reasoning, there are now a few of these high-powered V8 expresses circulating on the used car market. This sleek silver number is for sale from the same dealer who brought you the E320 Coupe from last week.

I have several times bemoaned the fact that, until recently, Volkswagen opted to not bring the 4-door Golf R32 to the United States. However, what they did offer for fans of utility was the Audi A3 3.2 quattro. It was a very expensive luxury counterpoint to the Golf R32 that we often feature, and with effectively the same running gear performance was nearly identical. 2 CommentsDuring our recent “4WD Week” I wrote up a 2007 S4 DTM edition, a car that while attractive I felt was pretty overpriced. In fact, I said that even though it was a limited edition I didn’t think it was nearly as desirable as the 2006 run of 250 25th Anniversary of Quattro S4s. These S4s were really like a diet RS4, gaining suspension upgrades, revised exterior pieces and some special interior treatments, and importantly a revised rear sport differential that really transformed the car’s handling. Additionally, the limited S4s got the best looking wheels of the bunch, special Ronals that appeared on both the Ultrasport Titanium package for the A4 and on this car in normal silver. More than just a limited edition sticker and special color (I’m looking at you, Lime Rock Park edition M3), this car was a culmination of lots of little changes that made for a bridge model between the normal S4 and the RS4:
