2006 Mercedes-Benz S430

If you wondering why I am featuring a run-of-the-mill W220 S430 look no further than the words “Almandine Black Metallic”. That’s the name, in my opinion, one of the most wonderful colors Mercedes-Benz has ever produced for its cars. It direct light it looks plum purple only for it to be mistaken for black in the shade and at night. It’s conservative enough to be taken seriously in any setting but still gives off a great shimmer that separates itself from the usual sea of black cars. So when this 2006 S430 4Matic popped up for sale in California, I had to take a closer look at it while trying to restrain myself from getting shipping quotes to bring this thing home to me.

Outside of the paint, this is your fairly standard W220. It’s a nice, clean California car with albeit fairly high miles at almost 187,000, but it looks like it has about half of that. Being this is the last year of the W220 and probably the best year of these cars to purchase as most of the problems that plagued these cars had theoretically been worked through, but at the end of the day it’s still a W220. You’ll occasionally run into Airmatic faults but generally I trust these cars at their core. It’s still just a basic M113 V8 paired to the 722.6 gearbox that has been tested a million times over in every Mercedes from this era. These cars do a pretty good job at being what S-Class are supposed to be: a relaxing, enjoyable place to be. If you stay up on your maintenance and repairs when needed, there’s no reason this car can’t go another 187,000 miles — just keep it away from salt.

So what’s the price to make it purple rain? A surprisingly reasonable $6,900. This price is indicative of it being in the place like San Jose where your mail carrier just got a new E550 so the price is a little softer than what you’d probably see if this car was for sale in any other part of the country. But this is a probably the best way to own a purple German car if you want to save $248,000.

2006 Porsche 911 Carrera S Club Coupe

Earlier this week I featured one of Porsche’s classic 911 special editions. This time we’ll turn to one of the modern versions. I’m not sure if we’ve ever featured this edition so it makes for a nice treat. This is a 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera S Club Coupe, located in Ontario, with just 3,044 miles on it. The condition looks superb and with only 50 such produced it is one of the rarer editions out there. The seller definitely is trying to capitalize on that rarity with an asking price that strikes me as insane, but given that I can’t ever recall seeing one come up for sale I suppose some premium is warranted. Add in the very low miles and surely we have a valuable 911. But this valuable?

This 2006 Porsche 911 Club Coupe is number 39 out of 50 made.

This car has been stored in a climate controlled glass box that was specifically made in the garage for the car, hidden from sunlight and any elements, stored under its cover and on tire cradles to prevent the original tires uneven tire wear from storage. While in storage, the car has a constant battery charge on the original battery. This car has never seen rain, let alone a cloudy day. This car has every service record and document since it was ordered in 2005. It is meticulously clean.

In recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the Porsche Club of America, Porsche created an exclusive distinctive colour, unique interior styling and commemorative touches, and a more powerful and higher performing engine. Limited to an exclusive run of just 50 cars initially made available to PCA members.

The first production model of this vehicle was returned to the Porsche Museum in Germany and one lucky PCA member won the 15th model in a sweepstakes drawing. The remaining 48 models were offered to randomly chosen PCA members who applied to purchase this extremely rare car. The Porsche 911 Club Coupe, which was available only in the unique Azzuro California colour, comes equipped with a more powerful 381hp engine with the X51 Power Kit. Other features unique to this special model include a vehicle identification number (VIN) which ends with the production number and special commemorative badges and door sills which adorn the interior. Additional exclusive options were available to customers and this one has the Aero kit Other exclusive options include Storage Compartment Lid with Model Logo and the Porsche Crest in the Headrests.

The 911 Club Coupe’s most visual exterior feature is its distinguishing Azzuro California Blue colour. This paint colour is a modern interoperation of azure blue, a colour mode popular on Porsche 356 sports cars when the PCA was founded 50 years ago. The rear portion of the standard centre console and the rear of the drivers and passenger seats is also painted in Azurro California.

In addition to the sport series seats, the 911 Club Coupe’s standard interior features include black instrument dials and a sort steer in wheel and gear shifter. Stainless steel door sills incorporate the 911 Club Coupe logo, and each car bears a badge on the drivers side door trim indicating its individual number in the series of 50 cars. The interior also features the Sport Chrono Package Plus which enhances vehicle performance through a system that simultaneously alters elements of chassis, engine, and transmission. In addition to the ability to take performance to new heights, the Sport Chrono Package equips the vehicle with performance display, digital and analog stopwatches, and the Sport Plus button.

The Club Coupe was the first in the current generation of Porsche 911 Sports cars to be equipped with the X51 Powerkit. This feature increases the output of the 3.8L, flat six cylinder Carrera S engine from 355hp to 381hp and peak torque from 295 to 306 ft. lbs., making it, at the time, the most powerful non-turbocharged engine offered in a Porsche 911 production car in North America. Distinguished by its carbon finer air cleaner housing, the X51 Powerkit boots performance through a series of engine enhancements including a larger throttle body, optimized intake airflow, cylinder heads and exhaust manifold modifications, changes in the control unit, and the inclusion of a sport exhaust system. The result produces a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds, and a top track speed of 186mph.

The Clue Coupe was produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Porsche Club of North America. Now, you might be thinking: didn’t Porsche just release a special edition Club Coupe in commemoration of the PCNA? They did! That was for the 60th anniversary. Look for the next one in 2026. The 50 year version came with a variety of cosmetic enhancements to set it apart from every other 911: the exterior came only in Azurro California – a lovely shade of light blue metallic that reminds me of Iris Blue from the ’80s – and the interior came in Stone Grey leather with sport seats and the center console painted to match the exterior. It’s a really nice color combination that appears to show well in a variety of lighting conditions. Unlike some of the earlier commemorative editions the Club also came with a bit more power in the guise of the X51 powerkit. Not too bad all around.

This particular Club Coupe has been pampered somewhat beyond reason and basically hermetically sealed in a glass box. Though it appears the owner has been gracious enough to allow it the freedom to romp around among some flowers every now and again. Very nice. Is it worth $230,000? I’d be very surprised. I suppose my interest lies in where it actually sells. I’m sure it’s one of the better examples out there given that it is more or less unused, but the buyer of this car will have to care for it under similar white glove conditions. Where’s the fun in that?

There isn’t very much time remaining on this ad, but since it isn’t an auction and doesn’t appear to be going anywhere too quickly that shouldn’t be overly problematic. I expect it will be relisted. It is, however, an interesting 997 in its color combination and likely its selling price, which should be very much on the reasonable end. The mileage is high, sitting at 110,235, but if its maintenance has been good, then I would see no reason why it couldn’t continue to provide enjoyable motoring in a pretty sophisticated package. This color combination almost tells two different stories. The burgundy-hued exterior brings with it some elegance, but little in the way of flash. It’s a very pretty shade of red, but like most of the darker hues it allows one to blend in to a degree. The Terracotta interior, however, suggests no such intention of blending in with the crowd. While certainly not as bright as Can-can Red, the contrast with the exterior is somewhat pronounced. I think it makes for an attractive combination and it looks to have been well cared for during its life.

Given that it has more than 100K miles a PPI would be a good idea. While the seller is correct that the Carrera 4 came with a wider rear, I’m not sure the sport suspension or Turbo brakes were standard. That seems to be a confusion with the 4S. I believe the suspension would have been optional and perhaps it was selected (though the listed options in the ad do not mention this), but given that this Carrera 4 lacks red calipers we can probably assume these aren’t the Turbo brakes. Those looking for a Carrera 4 probably will be aware of these differences, but it is the sort of thing that tells us we should look at little closer at whatever records are available. At the end of the day, this higher-mileage 911 comes in at a pretty nice price and surely offers a heck of a lot of performance for that price. That it comes in an interesting color combination and with a 6-speed manual just makes everything that much sweeter.

Feature Listing: 2006 BMW M Roadster

Like earlier’s Audi TT, BMW’s first successful foray into the roadster market came in the 1990s with the Z3. The Z3’s styling was less aggressive and more organic than the original “Future Roadster” – the Z1 – had been, but initially motivation wasn’t much better. However, when BMW decided to stuff the E36 chassis full of the higher-power M-product motors, they instantly created a hit. Rear drive only with a singing inline-6 and attached to a manual transmission, they were affordable sports cars that offered a very high fun quotient even if they were not the most refined product, style or substance-wise.

At the same time that the M Roadster and M Coupe debuted in North America, planning was already underway for the Z3’s replacement. The new E85 Roadster and E86 Coupe debuted as a fresh face to replace the 90s-era Z3 in the early 2000s, but almost immediately the styling was considered controversial. There were hard edges, curves and cuts integrated into the exterior, and the traditional driver-oriented dashboard was gone, replaced by a more modern flat-cockpit layout. Much like the original Z1, it didn’t look like anything else on the market at the time, and reception was mixed.

Dynamically, though, it was hard to argue that the Z4 wasn’t a vast improvement in refinement over the Z3. The rear suspension was updated with a new multi-link setup which handled power (and bumps) significantly better than the outgoing E36 chassis with E30 bits. A stiffer structure meant more overall composure. And though the interior remained plastic-heavy, the new generation of dashboards looked much more upscale and modern than the dated 90s pieces. Yet the biggest change lay at the end of the run, as it had with the Z3, as starting in 2006 BMW installed the legendary S54B32. Providing 330 horsepower to the rear wheels and trick M-differential via a 6-speed manual, the limited production M Roadster and M Coupe also corrected one of the perceived flaws of the normal Z4 lineup by retaining a hydraulic steering setup. More aggressive exterior styling was met by a refreshingly simple and less gimicky interior than the Z3 had. For some 3,041 original owners, this was Roadster perfection, and today on the used market they’re a steal relative to their exclusivity and performance:

Feature Listing Alumnus: 2006 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Estate

We originally featured this 2006 Mercedes-Benz E55 Estate back in May of 2013 from our friends at EuroWerkz. This car has boomeranged to them with a little bit more miles but presenting just as great as it always has. The E55 AMG Estate needs no introduction here at GCFSB. It’s remarkable that Mercedes-Benz still offers a go-fast E-class Estate in a marketplace that demands vanilla offerings at every turn. But they have bravely carried on through the years, offering this bonkers five-door to us for a decade now. Along with the Geländewagen and AMG GT, this populates the cool corner of the current Mercedes lineup. However, not everyone has around $100,000 to spend on a new family speed machine. This E55 AMG offers a solution around that fiscal sticking point.

2006 Audi S4 25quattro

Ten years ago Audi celebrated their 25 years of Quattro by giving the United States (Sorry Canada, the bumpers didn’t meet Canadian low-speed crash test standards) a special delivery of 250 B7 S4 special ‘25quattro’ editions. All painted in a typically German Avus Silver color, these cars got DTM inspired front and rear bumpers that wear non-functional brake ducting and finished off with an aero-style lower rear valance (with a red tow hook hiding below it) and a carbon fiber trunk spoiler with matching front splitter. The wheels are again DTM inspired with a 15 spoke design pattered after OZ Racing but ironically made by long Audi supplier Ronal. On the inside, your typical full Recaro setup is there with two-tone seats in jet-gray as well as some carbon fiber trim and ‘1 of 250’ shift knob. All said and done, Audi gave it’s fans a nice cosmetic package to different from the rest of the B7 S4s. Unfortunately, the 25quattro received no performance upgrades outside of some different exhaust tips to give you a slightly more aggressive sound, but the car did receive the revised more rearward biased drive system also found in the RS4. Being only 1 of 250, this 25quattro located in California might fulfill your appetite for a rare V8 Audi without stepping into RS4 territory.

2006 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

Porsche’s pastel blues are some of my favorite of any manufacturer. They are almost beyond vibrant and provide a sense of life to any 911 that takes the dynamic capabilities of the machine and expands through color. Cars stimulate all of the senses other than taste and a heightening our visual sense of any car is bound to either repel some or completely intoxicate others. Most any pastel color will do that – I really don’t think there’s a middle-ground with these colors – and my favorites are blue and orange, both of which Porsche does well. We see them very rarely and this is one of the few non-GT 997s I’ve come across in such a color. The seller has stated that this is Pure Speedster Blue, which is not a color I’ve heard of but since it’s stated to be paint-to-sample that isn’t uncommon. Regardless, it’s along the lines of Mexico Blue and Riviera Blue, two shades that were offered in very limited runs in the ’70s and ’90s respectively. I love them and on this 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S you get modern refinement and mechanicals, but with a vintage color.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SL550

The R231 Mercedes SL has been with us for about three years, and I have to say that it hasn’t grown on me at all. Neither the exterior nor interior aesthetics do anything for me. Having said that, I think the previous generation SL, the R230, is one of the best looking cars Mercedes has ever made.

Released in the U.S. market in 2003, the R230 spanned a relatively short production life for a Mercedes SL. Its predecessor, the R129, was produced for twelve years, and the R107 lasted for eighteen years. The R230 received a debatably successful facelift in 2009, which gave the previously rounded front fascia a more rigid appearance, and tweaked a few stylistic details both on the interior and exterior to give the car a more aggressive appearance. The facelift divided many Mercedes enthusiasts, but the general consensus was that the R230 was still a beautiful car.

Today I’d like to go over some of the details on this very attractive 2012 SL550. 2012 was the last year of production for the R230 SL, which was offered in three derivations for the U.S. market; the SL550, and the AMG-tuned SL63 and SL65 models. Not many AMG SL’s were sold in 2012, but there doesn’t appear to be a shortage of final year SL550’s. This particular one is finished in my favorite color combo of black on tan, and appears to be in great shape. With only 17,000 miles, this is about as close as you can get to picking up a brand new R230 generation SL.

Feature Listing: Correctly Optioned 2006 BMW X5 4.4i

Today’s Feature Listing is this well optioned, first generation BMW X5. Paul asked me specifically to write this one up because I currently have an e53 4.4i in my stable, and the seller’s quest in finding this example was very similar to mine. The e53 X5 was considered by many the best in class at it’s release — if not in the sense of outright off-road performance, but rather more than competent in handling the occasional foul weather detail and always feeling more than up to the task the rest of the time. In fair weather conditions it behaves like spacious 5 serious, which is what makes it such a great touring car coupled with a 400+ mileage range.

In the seller’s description he describes how he sought out the following packages for his ideal e53: Premium, Sport, Cold Weather, and Navigation. Trust me, this is the combination you’re looking for. Mine is too early for navigation and is also lacking the cold weather package; which means no heated seats and an omission my wife will never forgive me for. And yes, the sport seats are sweet upgrade in the cabin of a family oriented vehicle.
