Tuner Tuesday: Executive Sweet – Alpina v. Brabus

A1

If last week’s brace of RennTechs left you feeling a little poor and lacking horsepower in your daily driver, today’s Tuner Tuesday hopes to offer you some more affordable – albeit not as powerful – options. So, if you don’t need a 700 horsepower daily driver, perhaps these great options from Alpina and Brabus are the perfect solution. Both are impeccably presented, not something you’d see every day, and will truly make you feel special no matter what your destination is. Let’s start with the newer Alpina B7 in signature Alpina Blue:

This car is just massively impressive to me. You get a basically new Alpina B7 for 25% less than a brand new one. Most of the B7s I’ve seen are boring black, silver or white; this car stands out and looks spectacular in blue. The wheels are tremendous and transform the look. There are options galore; and if there isn’t enough luxury don’t forget there’s a healthy dose of sport in these B7s, with stiffer but more compliant suspension than the factory and a 500 horsepower motor capable of sub-5 second runs to 60. There is little you’ll meet in your daily commute that will out-luxury or out-accelerate this impressive car. But for some folks, this car is a little too pricey or has a few too many doors. Perhaps this stunning Brabus is a better option:

With an original sticker $25,000 higher than the B7 5 years earlier, this is certainly rarefied air. Like the B7, there are options galore; this car is truly stunning to look at. The wood is immaculate, leather abounds, and the combination of those wheels and the black only hint at the sinister car that this is. The Brabus body upgrades – which can sometimes be in…questionable….taste – fit neatly onto this model. This car doesn’t feature Brabus engine upgrades, so you’ll have to make due with only 510 horsepower and 612 lb/ft of torque – enough to challenge most 911 turbos in 0-60 sprints at 4.4 seconds. Like the Alpina, there is nothing that will out-luxury or out-accelerate you on your daily commute. To make this car even more appealing, with only 50,000 miles on the clock and looking as close to new as a used car can be, this CL 600 is offered at roughly half the price of the Alpina.

Were it my money, I’d find it pretty hard to pass up that sweet looking Alpina, though the price of the Mercedes is pretty enticing. In the long run I’d wager that the Alpina would also be worth more money and cheaper to run, though that’s a bit of a gamble. Which one would you have?

Convertible Week: Audi R8 GT Spyder

I stumbled upon an Audi R8 GT, one of 333 in the world/90 in the country, outside a West Marine locally. It is a fantastic development of the R8, a little more B-2 bomber to the standard R8’s Space Shuttle aesthetic. Seems like the 2014 R8 is a real step up, but with bonus points for rarity the 2012 R8 GT Spyder just might be the one to have. A metric handful (50) made it over to these shores, but if you like your Audi with a bit more of the Lamborghini family traits, you can have it today for a hair under $200k.

The standard R8, even in 5.2 V10 guise, is still a buttoned-up, gentleman’s supercar. The R8 GT Sypder casts that aside, talking trash like a track star but backing it up – it does have 560 bhp and all-wheel drive, after all. Damn. All posturing aside, it has to be a mental ride on a twisty mountain road.

2012 Volkswagen Golf TDI

In a time when fuel economy reigns supreme with buyers, most blindly flock towards the hybrid offerings from manufacturers thinking that they’re getting the most fuel efficient cars available. While they are among some of the most fuel efficient, the trade off is driving something that resembles a suppository. Buyers for such things as the Prius, Insight or Volt are generally more interested in the “look at me” factor of those cars. For the rest of us, the answer lies in an old technology that has evolved into one of the most (if not the most) fuel efficient powerplants on the road: the TDI.

With highway MPGs in the 60 range, the 2.0l VW TDI is the fuel efficient car for those of us that aren’t in to the image as much as we are in to subtlety. This barely used Candy White Golf for sale in Bozeman, Montana is a great blend of efficiency and four door utility.

My 2012 Volkswagen Golf is a 4-door hatchback model. diesel. Clean-diesel fans will like the 2.0L turbo-diesel ‘TDI’ 4-cylinder. This Golf TDI model comes with a 6-speed manual. TDI models achieve great gas mileage, with EPA ratings of up to 30 mpg city, 42 mpg highway. Excellent variable-assist electromechanical power rack-and-pinion steering, strut-type front suspension and fully-independent rear suspension, the Golf is tuned to feel responsive, which goes well with the compact hatchback’s maneuverability and parking ease. Four-wheel disc brakes provide strong stopping power, and electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes are included. The Golf also rides quieter and with more refinement than other on-a-budget hatches. The 2012 Golf’s interior exceeds expectations for those seeking basic transportation, as it adds a little more pizzazz than other hatchbacks in its price range. The instrument panel and door trims are nicely detailed, and there are plenty of soft-touch surfaces. Front seats are adjustable for height and lumbar, and power recline feature. Rear seats are just spacious enough for most adults, and seat backs are split 60/40 and fold forward to expand cargo space up to 46 cubic feet; otherwise with them up, there’s 15.2 cubic feet–about enough for a standard load of groceries.

Includes power windows and locks, cruise control, air conditioning, a trip computer, a rear wiper and washer, steel wheels and an 8-speaker system with an auxiliary input. The Convenience Package adds heated front seats, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, and a front armrest, sunroof, premium sound, SIRIUS satellite radio and iPod interface, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated washer nozzles, and foot well lighting and navigation system. I’ve driven this car in the snow here in Montana and it handles superbly. The roof rack shown in the pictures in not included.

North American perception of diesels is still generations behind the rest of the world. In the US, many still have visions of the noisy, smokey and smelly Mercedes-Benz cars from the 70’s and 80’s. Since then diesel has come a long way and VW is leading the way. TDI technology is nothing new in the automotive world, with stateside offerings going back to the 90’s, but in recent years, VW has really pushed the TDI brand and diesels are finally getting the respect they deserve.

This TDI Golf offers everything that its competition doesn’t, a manual gearbox, normal styling and most importantly, power. With a Buy it Now price $1,500 below market value, the seller is certainly in the realm of reality with this car.

2012 Volkswagen Golf R

The GTI 2.0 we featured yesterday could be considering anything but blisteringly fast. Just a decade later, the R32 helped progress the hot hatch game. Now Volkswagen has now unleashed a 256 horsepower, all-wheel drive monster on the hot hatchback scene. The R is the automotive equivalent of the four year itch. Volkswagen had R versions of the 2004 and 2008 Golfs, which both featured the VR6 engine and the DSG automatic gearbox in the 2008 model. For 2012, Volkswagen has chosen turbocharged, four-cylinder power and the sole transmission available is a 6-speed manual. Available in two and four-door configurations, the two-door, non-sunroof/navigation model starts at a shade under $34,000. This lightly used R for sale in Texas is the “base” model and offers buyers a chance at this limited production hot hatch at a very slight discount.

2012 Volkswagen Golf R on eBay

Only 1K Miles, One Owner, Features Include: Bluetooth, Heated Seats, Climate Control, 6-Speed Manual Transmission, Xenon Headlights, LED Daytime-Running Foglights, 18′ Wheels, Touch Screen AM/FM Stereo with CD/MP3 Player, Aux-In Outlet, Satellite Radio-Capable, Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel with R Logo, Steering Wheel Controls, Armrest with Storage and Rear Air Vents, All Wheel Drive, Turbocharged 2.0T Engine, Rear Spoiler, Black Grille with R Logo, Center Dual Chrome Exhaust, Tinted Windows, One-Touch Auto Up/Down Power Windows, Power Locks, Side Mirror Turn Signals, and Much More! Volkswagen Certified Pre-Owned means you not only get the reassurance of a 2yr/24,000 mile Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty, but also a 112-point inspection/reconditioning, 24/7 roadside assistance, and a complete CARFAX vehicle history report.

The last time I visited a Volkswagen dealer, I spotted a four-door Golf R on the lot. The sticker price was a little over $38,000. Across the lot was a brand new Audi A4 2.0T Quattro sedan for around $34,000. The A4 is down 45 horsepower in comparison to the Golf, but I’d honestly save a few thousand dollars and go for the Audi. But that’s just one person’s preference. I’m sure Volkswagen will have no problem selling the 5,000 Rs that will be made available here in the US. And for those in colder climates, the all-wheel drive is certainly a draw.

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet

I’ll admit, I’m one of those Porsche 911 fanatics. I’ve never owned one, but certainly plan to before I leave this earth. The new for 2012 911 is still growing on me. I think it looks a bit more sleek from the front angle and the 7-speed manual gearbox is certainly unique. But I think the rear end is a bit too busy with the Porsche script and all of the ones I’ve seen in person have the PDK gearbox. I know, before everyone says it, I know this gearbox is more efficient and faster off the line, but I’m still one of those die hard enthusiasts that prefers to swap cogs myself in a sports car. This 911 Carrera S Cabriolet for sale in Ohio has the PDK but I am smitten with the color combination, even if the interior could be considered a bit outlandish with all that red.

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet on JamesList

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S, 2,100 original miles. Perfect, one owner car, Agate Gray Metallic over Carrera Red, PDK transmission, Premium Package Plus, Carbon fiber steering wheel, carbon trim Deviating stitching (cream) throughout AMAZING color combination! We’ve seen our share of 911s in all sorts of colors, but this one really stands out. The way the Agate Metallic integrates with the Carrera Red interior and top is simply classic. That those finishes are draped over a gorgeous new 991 doesn’t hurt, either! You COULD have a new 991 S cab for around $109,000, but you could have this one, loaded with options, for just a few dollars more. Power Steering Plus, Premium Package Plus with 14 way heated and cooled seats, 20 inch wheels, sport exhaust, extended leather and deviating stitching as far as the eye can see. This car is optioned very, very well.

I think the seller has a point in this advertisement. What’s another $15,000 to $20,000 in options when you are spending six figures anyway? This 911 is well equipped, but it also has me longing for Porsche to make a more simple version for the more serious enthusiast. But, being Porsche, I bet they would charge more for less. Still, I am loving the combination of Agate Gray with the red canvas top and red leather. It makes me think that the new 911 is about as close to a timeless machine that is made currently.

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera

Next year, the Porsche 911 will celebrate its 50th anniversary. What the sports car maker from Stuttgart will do to commemorate the occasion remains to be seen, but I thought it would be an opportune time to revisit this perennial favorite and highlight the latest development in the series, the 2012 Carrera, internally known as the 991. While changes to the exterior are subtle at best, one of the major features to be unveiled was a new 7-speed manual gearbox, a first for a production road car. While it is generally accepted that Porsche’s 7-speed dual cutch PDK transmission is faster and more efficient, I couldn’t fathom owning a 911 without three pedals. Weight is down on the new Carrera by 45 pounds and with the standard 3.4 liter, 345 horsepower flat six engine, performance is more than adequate for this rear engine marvel.

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera on eBay

This 911 ‘s level of quality is not meant for just anyone. It’s meant for the person who strives for a classy, comfortable, and luxurious car. Driven by many, but adored by more, the 911 is a perfect addition to any home. The 911 will provide you with everything you have always wanted in a car — Quality, Reliability, and Character.

This Porsche includes:

Wheel Caps with colored crest
Platinum Silver Metallic
Fuse box cover in leather
Sport exhaust system
Natural leather interior processing code
Delete rear lid model designation
Ornamental Porsche crest
Auto dimming interior/exterior mirrors
Carrera red, natural leather seat trim with full leather interior
Power tilt/slide sunroof with shield
Heated front seats with multi-stage controls

It’s rather chilling that on the same day Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche passed away, the new 911 was declared World Sports Car for 2012. The man who designed the original 911 would have been proud. While some enthusiasts have derided the 911 for being an inherently compromised design throughout the years, continuous improvement has brought us to this point. The 911 has outlived both the front-engined 944 and 928 that were designed to succeed it and there seems no end in sight for this most venerable icon of German performance.

2012 Buick Regal GS

For years, I often wondered when Ford and General Motors would see the light and realize that some of their European offerings would work well here in the US market. Not only would a strategy such as this save development costs but it would be a boon for enthusiasts not enamored by the usual condominium-sized SUVs and rental fleet mid-sized sedans which are the bread and butter of US manufacturers. With the restructuring of GM and demise of Saturn, Buick was the de facto brand to foist Opels on the North American scene, albeit rebadged as Buicks. The first example of this was the resurrection of the Regal nameplate, a rebadged Opel Insignia. I’ve driven the 2.4 liter version with a 6 speed automatic and have to say, I came away impressed. It drove a bit like a slightly more refined Volkswagen Passat. It was by no means underpowered and you can tell this wasn’t your typical American car, as its German heritage shined through in both fit and finish and ride quality. Now Buick has introduced a hot version of the Regal for 2012, the GS. After laying eyes on this car at the Washington, DC Auto Show, I was impressed. While we are not getting the turbocharged, all-wheel drive V6 version of the Opel Insignia OPC, the GS packs a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine good for 270 horsepower, albeit without all-wheel drive. Also included in the package is an available 6 speed manual transmission, Brembo brake calipers and a tuned suspension package.

2012 Buick Regal GS on eBay

This 2012 Buick Regal GS is in absolutely perfect condition and nearly new, showing less than 500 miles on the odometer (It will be driven between now and the end of the auction). There is no body damage and no mechanical faults that we are aware of. The original owners manual, window sticker, and all other documents from the original sale will be included in the sale. I’m glad to see this seller isn’t price gouging like some people do with recently introduced models. I think black works well and gives the GS a more sinister look when combined with the polished 19” wheels. While it may be front wheel drive, if I was in the market for an entry level luxury sedan, I would choose this over a C class, 3 series or Acura TL, simply because you don’t see as many of these on the road and frankly, the styling is more cohesive than any of the aforementioned choices. There is one problem with the Buick Regal GS, other than the lack of rear or all-wheel drive. The Cadillac ATS will be on sale this summer and available with the same 270 horsepower four cylinder engine and choice of 6 speed manual or automatic driving the rear wheels or all four wheels. Plus the styling is even better in my opinion than the Regal. Still, I can’t help but applaud Buick for offering such a cool car. Ten years ago, I would have never guessed their product lineup would have been transformed this much.
