2014 Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic Sport

3

To be honest, I heaved a sigh of relief the day I sold my 2007 Mercedes-Benz C230 Sport. I felt as if the compact executive sedan was becoming too ubiquitous for the upwardly mobile in my area, especially those wearing an Audi, BMW or Mercedes badge. To this day, I’m happy with the choice I made to buy a used 2006 MINI Cooper S, as it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. A few months back, while on a business trip to South Africa, my father called and informed me he traded in his W202 C280 for a 2014 C300 4Matic in Dolomite Brown Metallic, like the car we see here for sale in Texas. I didn’t give much thought to the W204 C-class when it replaced the W203 C-class shortly after I bought my C230 Sport. Given that the W205 C-class has a turbo four-cylinder engine, lack of start-stop override and a navigation screen that looks like an iPad slapped on the dash, it has me eyeing these late model W204 C300s with their 3.5 liter V6 a bit more closely.

2014 Porsche 911 GT3 – Paint-to-Sample Mexico Blue

Every iteration of Porsche’s 911 GT3 seems to push the boundaries on what we think is possible from a performance perspective from a road car. The GT3 RS then extends those boundaries even further, but usually with the sacrifice of some of the day-to-day usability. With each new model Porsche manages to produce more power from a seemingly confined package while increasing road-holding and other performance benchmarks, but with little apparent sacrifice. Even as a variety of jurisdictions develop increasingly more stringent emissions standards that make it seem impossible for cars such as these to continue to exist, let alone improve, the GT3 manages to do just that. And the example we see takes all of that exceptional Porsche engineering and wraps it in one of the best colors in the 911’s long history. Here we have a paint-to-sample Mexico Blue 2014 Porsche 911 GT3, located in Arizona, with 3,200 miles on it.

Nogoff 2: 2014 Audi S4 v. 2015 Audi S4

A good friend of mine rolled up for a visit yesterday in her B8 Audi S4. So much attention has been focused on the launch of the turbocharged M3/M4 that it’s easy to forget that the S4 is still a very good choice in the sport sedan market. If you believe that all Audis drive the same with terminal understeer, you haven’t been behind the wheel of the most recent generations from the four rings, whose clever computers, suspension and differentials have left them turning as well as they go. And they look as good as they go too, with signature top-tier interiors and lovely details. Audi recently offered a brief run of classic Nogaro Blue Pearl Effect on the S4 too, with a special edition that bathed the S4 in the purpley-blue. Today I have two such colored examples to look at – which is the one you’d nog off to?

2014 Audi S8

Affordable means different things to different people. Case in point, a college friend of mine who has done well for himself is cross-shopping 2014 supersedans as they have all experienced serious depreciation. Now, 45% off may sound like a sale in the Walmart meat department, but when the starting cost was an eighth of a million dollars, it’s still much more than I’ll ever likely pay for an automobile. But, for this 6’7″ former collegiate volleyball and hockey player, the $70k-80k range for what is still pretty much the state of the art in ass-hauling luxury sedans makes the two-year old S8, E63 S, and M5 affordable.

The S8 is obviously a class above the AMG and Bimmer, but he likes the S8’s looks and 90hp advantage over the S6. After considering these three cars and looking up some grey/black on grey/black examples, I was surprised by which I settled on. The AMG S is certainly the powerhouse here, with the M5 hot on its heels, but when I think about a 6’7″ dude cruising in Southern California, neither of them seem like the right choice. Whether its the longer wheelbase or the dismissal of any pretense of trackability, the S8 brings insane power, huge luxury, and massive comfort backed by the legendary Quattro capability. Now I want one. This 2014 S8 hasn’t even broken 15k miles but is over $40k cheaper than it was 2 years ago. Ouch for the old owner, great news for the buyer who gets nightvision, adaptive cruise control, a solar sunroof, and all kinds of other things that make this thing sound like a futuristic spaceship. With 513hp, it’s not that far off.

2014 Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition

I have been taking a look at a few more modern Porsches than usual so why not round that perusal off with another of the special 911s Porsche produced. As we know Porsche loves to commemorate its milestones and achievements. The 911 itself has seen two separate 25th Anniversary Editions: the first was to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Porsche production in 1975 and the second to commemorate twenty-five years of 911 production in 1989. There is also the Commemorative Edition 911, which was produced in 1988 to celebrate the production of 250,000 911s. As I said, Porsche likes to celebrate. Naturally, then, the 50th Anniversary of the 911 would not be allowed to pass without its own special edition, one of which we see here: a Graphite Grey 2014 Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition, located in North Carolina, with a 7-speed manual transmission and 3,700 miles on it. Most of Porsche’s commemorative editions feature predominantly cosmetic changes to set them apart from others 911s and, for the most part, the 50th Anniversary Edition is no different. Though there is a caveat that makes those cosmetic changes a little more significant. Visually the 50th Anniversary Edition is distinguished by its wheels, which remind us of the Fuchs of old, and by its wider rear borrowed from the Carrera 4. That wider rear is perhaps the most important selling point of the car as this is the only model on which it can be found combined with rear-wheel drive. Mechanically it is basically a Carrera S with the Powerkit and Sport Chrono package, which channels 430 hp through the transmission to the rear wheels. I’ve seen more than one writer proclaim these as one of the best looking 911s produced and while I wouldn’t go that far it is a wonderful representation of the 991 and a fitting testament to where the 911 has been and where it is now. Typical of Porsche, production of the 50th Anniversary Edition was limited to 1963 units, as 1963 was the year Porsche showed the 911 to the world.
